Bell is a wonderful narrator and I loved seeing the world through his eyes. While I will definitely be recommending this book to science fiction fans , this would also be a great read for those who enjoy realistic fiction. Yes, it takes place in the future on Mars but the story is about friendship and family and how people relate to one-another and doesn't get too into the nuts-and-bolts sci-fi of living on Mars. It is full of heart and packs quite an emotional punch.
As an aside, I do wonder how it might read differently in non-covid times than now in 2021 considering the isolation that much of the target audience has experienced over the past year. Can a 10 year old in their 8th month of virtual school who has only been able to interact in person with a very small group of people see themselves in Bell? I wish Sal could narrate every book I read. This book is so, so funny and fun but also deals with tough and important issues like bullying, grief, chronic disease and being the new kid and it works so well because we have Sal's pov. He is very relatable. I adore Gabi as well and the book really hits it's stride as they spend more time together. I also really love the spanish phrases throughout the book and that they aren't always immediately fully translated. That provides a little extra layer for spanish speakers but doesn't take away anything for readers who don't speak spanish. Highly recommend for humorous sci-fi/fantasy fans....more

I would re read it every so often but I could never remember the title for some reason so I would search the young adult section at my local library and look at all the books with the sci fi genre sticker until I found it. I was hooked from the first chapter and probably read it in one or two sittings. I was drawn in by the protagonists quest and couldn't wait for them to discover the origins of their strange dreams. The resolution didn't disappoint and the impression the book left with me has continued to this day. Sometimes you just find the right book at the right time and this was one of those situations for me. ...more
