I loved the premise of this novel: stories about the inhabitants of one piece of property over the decades. However, I found much of the book to be weird. While some of the characters had compelling histories, others included murderers, an obsessed apple grower, twin spinster sisters, a schizophrenic, an adulterer, a psychic, gay lovers, ghosts, prisoners, and a hungry catamount (a wildcat similar to a mountain lion).
I will probably be an outlier on this one. The professional reviewers are loving it. The flowery writing and occasional poetry just weren't my cup of tea.
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for the opportunity to read this unique novel.

I loved certain stories, and others left me underwhelmed. So I get it, Kerrin! :)

Kerrin, I have seen another review like yours, which gives me pause. I tend not to like edgy or disturbing stories. I disliked Elizabeth Strout's "Anything is Possible" and Kevin Wilson's "Tunneling to the Center of the Earth. Thanks for your honest review.

Wow Kerri , I agree with you. I was so looking forward to this book and was disappointed for similar reasons.

Well, I finished it. Not my cup of tea. I'll be interested to see what the other women in the book club think of it.
A correction: a catamount is not a "mix between a mountain lion and a bobcat." A catamount is a large wildcat, which are also called mountain lions, panthers, and cougars. (Odd/interesting that there are several names for the same animal.) Bobcats are MUCH smaller. And a catamount couldn't be a "mix" since mountain lions and bobcats certainly don't engage in interspecies sex with each other.

Thanks for the information, Andrea. I can't remember where I found the definition that called them a mix. Probably not the best term.

Nice honest take on it Kerrin. As an outlier myself, writing is art and individual tastes vary. I'm going to pass on this one as a result

I respectfully disagree. All I did was give one or two-word descriptions of some characters. I didn't discuss any plot. Saying that a character is a "murderer" or a "psychic" just lets the reader know this book, like thousands of others, has those types of personalities.

100% agree. I enjoyed the premise, but the delivery in tedious, meandering descriptions was not for me either. There are moments that become interesting, then it is on to the next chapter. Thanks for your review!
It was a dnf for me. Once I got to the ending of Mary & Alice, I was done. It was dark and I felt no sympathy for the characters. I saw the reviews and thought the premise sounded interesting, but it took me 10 days to read 96 pages because I just didn't want to pick it up, so I decided not to waste any more of my time.
It left me cold too. Reader friends had loved it but I just felt too detached from the stories and plots.
