!!! I fixed my notification problem! I am now receiving them for comments. I logged out/off from all devices and also cleared cache/history on all the browsers where I used the website. I hope it will also help others who share the same issue. You still need to manually check the Notify me when people reply box manually though.

Only 3* this year and here is why:

1. Goodreads’ management decisions to eliminate some functions succeeded to annoy me so badly that I considered leaving the website. The worse was when they removed the sorting of friends. I used that for different reasons, but mostly for kipping up with new updates. The news feed is not good enough as I am only receiving updates from some friends. The removal of notifications and the need to go through each review and tick the Notify me box was an insult addressed to all members. I am still here because I care about the community. I still like reading and writing about books and I feel good when people are inspired by my thoughts. For how long, I do not know.
2. I could not keep up with my reading. I still have around 40 book that need reviewing and I feel overwhelmed. It did not help that I did not write any reviews for almost one month due to reason no.1.
3. I had a big literary fiction reading slump which is not entirely over. I read a lot of mystery and fantasy which is fine but I wish I could have read more of the novels I had planned at the beginning of the year.

Taking everything in consideration, I did not make my usual summary and I will only mention a few favorites.

Favorite fantasy:
1. The Library at Mount Char by Scott Hawkins
2. The Liveship Traders series by Robin Hobb
3. The Riyria Chronicles series by Michael J. Sullivan

Favorite SF novel:
1. Children of Dune by Frank Herbert
2. Project Hail Mary by Andy Weir
3. We by Yevgeny Zamyatin

Favorite mystery novel:
1. Mystic River by Dennis Lehane
2. Trunk Music by Michael Connelly
3. A Quiet Flame by Philip Kerr

Favorite literary fiction:
1. Pereira Maintains by Antonio Tabucchi
2. The White Tiger by Aravind Adiga
3. Father Goriot by Balzac

Happy New Year friends! Hopefully, next year, users will be listened to more.

Federico DN I totally get your frustration about recent changes, which nearly all had been for the worse. Still, despite all GR's many glitches, I like focusing on the good side of things and I'm still incredibly thankful every day to have a space like this to share bookish stuff with my friends. Especially knowing how lousy all the other alternatives are in comparison, social community wise.

I miss the sorting friends tools too which I too used sometimes. Though if you go to the full friends list and go to the very last page you will find your friends that have 'updated' sth recently. Dunno it you knew it or if it helps at all. Hopefully yes!

The Feed is indeed a mess and the reason why I have not used it in years! I just visit every friend that has left me a comment or like one by one and try to reciprocate back. It's very time consuming, but that way I usually make certain I don't miss anything at all :).

Hope you won't leave but I'll understand if you do. All the best Adina <3!

Peter Keep your head up Adina and all the best for your reading in 2025!

Lisa Federico wrote: "Though if you go to the full friends list and go to the very last page you will find your friends that have 'updated' sth recently. "

Thanks for this tip! I didn't know that, and it will help me immensely.

Lisa Adina, I have missed your reviews!
I am sorry for the frustration with GR and your reading slump.
My unsolicited advice--start fresh for the new year. Ignore GR intransigence and post reviews for the new books that you read. Those of us who want to read them will find them. And take a deep breath as you check that little box every time.
The feature here that is precious to me is the community of readers. I have come to rely on their/your reviews to point me to new to me authors and titles.
Wishing you joy and more stellar literary fiction reads for 2025!

Holly R W Adina, I share your frustrations with GR. My notifications have only been omitted recently, and I'm already feeling aggravated. I enjoy the discussions and give and take here. I hope you can shake your reading slump and remain on GR.

Canadian Jen I feel your pain when it comes to GR. Let's hope they hear or disappointment and make it right. Great review Adina & cheers to many more great reads for 2025!

Katya I really enjoy following your reading journey! Thank you for all the reviews Adina. Merry Christmas & Happy New Year! 🎄

message 8: by Charles (new)

Charles I so agree about being able/unable to sort contacts; I thought I was the only one; what kind of database doesn't allow sorting? Here's to a better, more flexible 2025, Adina, and a wonderful year in books.

Sergio Ruiz Adina. I'm sorry you are frustrated. For me Goodreads would be far less interesting without you. No pressure!

Donne I'm with you, Adina, regarding the change in notifications. UUUGGGHHH!!! I hate the new notification system. It sucks!!! But I too still like the site and still post reviews.

Ethan Hey Adina! Sorry your reading year wasn't so great; mine wasn't either. I hope you stay on Goodreads! I enjoy reading your thoughts on books :-)

It's cool you read We by Zamyatin; I didn't love that one but it was fascinating and I did enjoy it. Children of Dune too! All the palace intrigue ;-)

Happy New Year, and I look forward to more of your thoughts in 2025 :-)

Mwanamali With friends, I've found that going to the final tab (so like if there are 30, go to number 30) has the latest updates from friends.

message 13: by Kevin (new)

Kevin Ansbro The Goodreads app is indeed creaking at the seams, but I'm glad you didn't jump ship, Adina.
Wishing you a wonderful 2025 in books!

message 14: by Dilan (new)

Dilan Abdah The first point about Goodreads management is an eye opener, the review of the book is detailed in its own way and the favourites listed has helped the selections but that comment on the app and management truly stood out. Thank you

message 15: by Durval (new)

Durval Menezes About GoodReads website changing: I gave up some time ago getting angry about websites/apps/anything tech changing things that didn't need to be changed, and always for the worse. I think it's a consequence of the 2nd Law of Thermodynamics, therefore unavoidable and not worthy of getting riled up with.

Re: your year in books, thanks for your summary. I might pick up one or two of your best later on.

Re: my own year in books, it was not that great. No really interesting books (with one or two exceptions) and I've found myself losing patience with whatever I was reading more frequently than I wished. It might be just me getting older, but I get the distinct impression that there's less and less stuff worthy of my reading, even (or specially) from authors I used to like and respect.

I hope 2025 does a turn for the better. Happy new year everyone!

message 16: by Theresa (new)

Theresa Alan I'm not getting any notifications at all--where/how am I supposed to tick that? In my profile I ask for every notification and they just stopped. So frustrating. Every change they make makes this less user friendly.

It is as you say, gracias. I also do as you do, trying to reciprocate but this way I miss some less active friends or the ones who do not see my updates or I theirs.

How is Argentina nowadays, it does look better from the outside? How does it feel for you?

Happy New Year!

some books really fond you at the right time. It was like this with both of them. happy New Year!

Re your year. i guess the more we read the less we are surprised. When you read the same thing many times before, you are harder to impress. So this is one reason I’ve tried new genres this year, or ones I read less in the past.

E o placere sa vad si comentarii in romana.

Yules Dear Adina- please do not feel pressure to review on our behalf! You can always just mark “read” on those last 40 titles without review, and begin 2025 without overwhelm. You do more than enough to keep us well-informed about interesting titles, please don’t suffer over those last 40. Wishing you a Happy New Year!! 🤗
PS. Everyone remember to back up your GR reading data - I like to download mine at the end of the year every year, since GR is notoriously unreliable.

message 37: by Marcy (new) - added it

Marcy I agree with Yules. It’s no fun if it’s stressful! I joined StoryGraph, but I can’t get into it and I don’t want to lose my connections here. If you do leave and go elsewhere, I hope you will let us know where. I LOVED The Library at Mount Char btw. Happy new year Adina!

message 38: by Durval (new)

Durval Menezes Adina: "I guess I should have paid more attention to Physics at school. It might have helped me now." A lot of people don't like Physics. I loved it in high school and try and keep updated about it too this day (currently reading 2 related books on the subject in parallel).

"Re your year. i guess the more we read the less we are surprised. When you read the same thing many times before, you are harder to impress. So this is one reason I’ve tried new genres this year, or ones I read less in the past."

Good point. I tend to stick with works for me, but this "First Kiss" effect is something that indeed tends to blunt our pleasures. So this is my first (and at least so far, only) New Year resolution: try and read new genres. Perhaps to go back to Fantasy, which I've been neglecting for quite some time...

message 39: by Phil (new)

Phil I second your complaints about GR! Who decided that only a handful of friends would show up on the update feed? Hope you have a great next year!!

Jonathan O'Neill I share your annoyance about the state of this website, Adina! The fact that so many of us are still hanging onto it, I think, is a testament to the quality of the community. Nothing at all to do with the site itself.
Thanks very much for being a highlight of my reading year with our buddy-read of part of the Dune series. If you haven't moved onto the next I reckon we should find time for it sometime next year! :)
Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to you and your family. All the best, mate! :)

Only in Romantasy novels you can find more times :)) with a different meaning, though. I just started to read the God Emperor so, if you are planning to join soon, I can wait. It came back in my interest zone because i watched Dune Prophecy which I liked a lot. I think it deserves more than its rating on IMDB.

message 43: by P.E. (new) - rated it 3 stars

P.E. Hi Adina, I share many of your observations about the lack of clarity GR now provides and my feeling of being inordinately late in both reading and writing reviews. I have been the lack of motivation in these domains too, and I'm ultimately telling myself that what drives me is the level of interpersonal connection we get on this community, coupled with my reading pleasure that serve as the best compass here! Thanks for (still) taking part in this perilous adventure, may 2025 bring you new occasions to enjoy the company of your friends, relatives and fellow readers!

message 44: by Jan (new)

Jan Hi Adina,
I second you wholeheartedly on 1!

message 45: by Lynn (new) - rated it 5 stars

Lynn I agree with you about the Goodreads technical changes. I like to keep up with my friends and those changes made me have to look through my friend list to find people. You are a wonderful friend and I really enjoy your reviews. You definitely class up my profile page with your work. Have a fabulous new year of great reads!

message 46: by Armen (new)

Armen I do check your updates regularly and i do get inspired by them. hApPy New Year!

message 47: by Adam (new)

Adam It's frustrating as GR could be so much better, if just a little thought and maintenance was put into it. I look forward to reading your updates and all the best for 2025!

message 48: by Kimberly (new)

Kimberly I always enjoy your reviews and comments. You have been an inspiration.

message 49: by Chris (new)

Chris St Laurent Yes Goodreads has frustrated be lately too, many friends I have interacted with suddenly I no longer see their updates and reviews, that have just disappeared from my feed and the lack of notifications but love books and reading what others read and their reviews so I will be patient and kind. I have been going to my friends pages and checking their updates. Thank you for sharing

message 50: by Cindy (new)

Cindy Sheppard Gidge Totally understand the #1 reason! So irritating that they either try to "fix" what's not broken or "improve" per say but it's wearisome++....(maybe it's too much work,,, heaven forbid, and are too lazy to keep the features?...I too, would miss many friends here and finding out about books to definitely read, that even exist, and ones to avoid....
