IMPORTANT NOTICE! As informed by Adina, it is possible the issue can be fixed by logging in and out and clearing all the browser caché. So if you are still missing Notifications for all comments. Give it a try!

If you are missing Notifications you might want to check the "Notify me" box is ticked in your reviews. When GR changed the interface a couple of months ago, by default that box was left unchecked for everyone in all new and old reviews. I had to go through all my reviews and tick them one by one. It's a pain in the ass and it doesn't fix all the Notifications glitches, but it did make a lot of difference.

FYI: Same applies "When you comment on other people's reviews", "Statuses", "To Read", and every other thing.

FYI2: This box is only available in the 'Browser'. Can't find it in the 'App'.

FYI3: You may also want to check your NOTIFICATIONS SETTINGS are configured the way they are supposed to.

PERSONAL NOTE :

¡AVISO IMPORTANTE!

Srivalli Rekha GR messed up the notifications big time! I still don't know how many I keep missing.

lila ⋆ thank you for this! i just realized i missed out on a bunch of comments on my older reviews because that box was left unchecked. it's very annoying.

Sadly the only way is to check all your latest reviews, or all of them one by one, check what you've missed, and tick that freaking box to make sure it doesn't happen again :/. GlitchReads did it again Srivalli!

Anytime Lila! Yes, very annoying and time consuming! It's a lot of work visiting each review one by one, but I suppose it's worth it, if want to make sure you don't miss anything else :/. Though must be said it still happens, but a LOT less frequently with that box checked.

Tina Thank-you for posting this Federico!! Missing the comments and interactions really bothers me! Thanks again for the tips!

Stacey B Im frustrated Federico. :( I have done that since GRs removed them and ..very few notifications under the bell. Ugh. You are referring to those, and not email notifications-correct? I havent received a GRs email in months.
I also check my feeds to make sure they dont change.
I am missing out such great stuff. Sad.

Yes, I'm only speaking about the bell notifications Stacey, and specifically about the Browser bell notifications, I don't even know if these changes carry onto the App, which I almost never use. The Email notifications ceased to exist, even if you tick and explicitly configure it for emails in your preferences I believe they are not send at all, or so I've heard. I've never used Email notifications. I only manage myself in GR through the Browser and the All Notifications Manager.

It's indeed sad so many changes in GR and most of them for the worse. But managing myself through that combo (Browser and Notifications Manager), IDK, even being as active as I am I don't seem to be missing as much as other users. Like I've said I miss some stuff too but, configured that way, not THAT much.

The FEED Update is a useless mess btw, I haven't used that in years! I don't think it shows not even 20% of what my friends truly post. So I just limit myself to visit every day or two anyone that has left me a like or comment and just try to be nice and reciprocate back. It's a lot of work and VERY time consuming, but that way I don't need to trust what that broken useless Feed tells me anymore :/

message 9: by Fabian (new)

Fabian {Councillor} I was wondering about why I practically stopped receiving notifications. The GR interface has been close to unusable for so many years now, but this makes it even worse, somehow. I find myself navigating to my comment history (which is hidden under "my recent posts" and only accessible through your profile when you're member of at least one group on Goodreads) just to see whether there have been any answers to comments I've left.

It's the same for the app, btw, at least on Android. Lately it's happened more and more that even bell notifications disappear once you've looked at them, or don't show up correctly (either in the wrong order, or showing the wrong username). I love Goodreads for helping me organize my shelves—the shelf system is the one truly great thing about it and I'll be devastated the day they screw that system up like they did everything else—but things like this are so endlessly frustrating.

Yes I know, the Emails & Notifications bug is like the last drop that spilled the glass! One is just left to wonder— and dread— what GR could possibly screw up next.

There's an easier way though to access your comment history I think, through your profile drop down menu, as showed below.

As for the Notifications I prefer using the All Notifications Manager. I think it has the lowest tendency to fail or omit stuff, though I have perfectly clear that it still happens, but somehow less, at least in my experience.

An additional TIP: I love collecting group invitations, 16 so far! Sadly, I just don't have the patience or habit for programmed reading, I pick my books randomly and on a whim, so joining a group is just added frustration because I can never adhere to any schedule. But I found out it you don't refuse invitations, they can't resend them again :p

What! Either that "Comments" link was added in recent years, or I've been blind for the longest time. Guess it's the latter, but I'm flabbergasted that this shortcut exists and I've never seen it! I think it may have been added when they added the fourth symbol next to the profile pic in the top right ("group discussions"), because I swear it wasn't there in the first few years of me using Goodreads.

An additional tip for groups: I'm a member in various groups, but I've disabled all notifications for any of them and will only see anything from them when I consciously visit them, also because adjusting to someone else's schedule is impossible for me when it comes to reading haha.

message 12: by Hákon (new)

Hákon Gunnarsson This change annoys me a lot. I still haven’t got around to checking all the notification boxes. I don’t get why they would change it like this. It’s definitely not for the people that use this site.

You could be right Fabian! I mean I joined in 2014 but spend my first five years completely in the dark without friends just organizing and rating books. But sorry to confirm it has been there as long as I can remember using it, for several years at least, possibly around 2019 or later lol.

That's an awesome tip about the Groups I didn't know! Thanks! If I ever join a group disabling all notifications is the first thing I'm going to do lol

I don't have the faintest clue Hákon. And I've long lost any hope of getting answers from the Help Forum. Their standard response seems to be "Thank you for your feedback, I'll forward it somewhere, have a great day."

Well, Amazon/Goodreads has the monopoly on internet book reviews/discussions, so it's no wonder that nothing is going to change. Why would they invest in optimizing their page when millions of users still use it the way Amazon can profit from it? They don't care about us, and it's evident. Too bad that so many of us have grown so attached to the site.

It's such a shame to witness. :(

I guess that's one of the reasons many have moved to Storygraph and other bookish apps. I researched some but truth is —at least for me— GR is the best social bookworm site by FAR. And despite all its glitches, which are plenty, I'm still grateful every day to have a space like this to share bookish stuff with friends and kindred spirits <3. And who knows? Unlikely as it is, maybe someday it will change for the better lol. Glass half full Fabian :D

Thanks for the reminder that I need to become better at looking at the bright side of things :D
I agree with you, actually — the social aspect of GR is something that no other site will be able to replicate entirely, unless there will be some phenomenon like what Letterboxd became in recent years in terms of film reviews. I have checked out Storygraph before, but gave up on it because for all its bugs and misses, the functionalities Goodreads offers are still exactly what I'm using the site for.

That's right! We got this man. At least until Letterboxd expands and starts cataloging books, then we can all move there and live happily ever after. But until then, we hold the fort :D !

Fabian {Councillor} Letterboxd for books! Oh man, that would be the dream. :'D

Side note, I love that you added this entry to your "horror" and "mystery" bookshelves. How fitting.

I see so many of my friends with "I'm not getting Notifications" nicknames. It's so sad! Just hoping I can help. It's been more than two months... sadly hope can go so far Yun :/. It's tedious work backtracking hundreds of reviews, but I think it's worth it. I feel for my friends who have literally thousands of reviews though. Now THAT's painful!

❥ KAT ❥ Kitty Kats Crazy About Books I've ticked them all and still not getting notifications, still don't understand why GR removed them.

Email notifications KAT? That are gone, or so they tell me. Bell Notifications should work though, or most of them anyway :/

Alejandro Bummer that was happening. For me it seems that I got notifications alright, maybe I configured without knowing since the beginning, or not. But indeed I've been receiving notifications about old reviews, at least I think so. But thanks for telling us about.

Glad to hear that Alejandro! Maybe you are one of the lucky ones. It's like it's different degrees of glitches for everyone! Me for example going through my history found a bunch of old reviews with comments accumulating and never notified. Still, better to leave the tick on from now on, just in case ;)

Darla Thanks for the tips, Federico! Goodreads is on the naughty list this year.

message 46: by Vaishali • [V.L. Book Reviews] (last edited Dec 20, 2024 06:17AM) (new)

Vaishali • [V.L. Book Reviews] Thank you for being a generally great guy and notifying us of some helpful steps we can take since the GR interface transition Federico. I don't at all receive email notifications and review/comment feedback anymore. Along with that, I've strangely lost a lot of reader interaction, whether this is unrelated or otherwise :/ I think I'm personally cowering at the idea of manual selection by changing the option on every single review page. I'm definitely going to keep this tab of yours open thought in case I may change my mind. I'm glad to hear that the change hasn't greatly impacted you though Fed, at least some of us have had a better experience <3

Federico DN Darla wrote: "Thanks for the tips, Federico! Goodreads is on the naughty list this year."

Indeed. GlitchReads hit us strong this year Darla :x ! But given a few tweaks here and there, I say it's still a manageable and pleasurable experience to spend some time here among bookworm friends <3

Let me tell you it was an extremely exhausting task to go through nearly 900 reviews just for ticking freaking a box, but that's only because I'm an obsessive completionist and did it all in one go :x. But in your case is so much easier V. With 300 doing as little as 10 a day you can finish in a month, two months with 5. But it's up to you ofc. And must be noted it doesn't nearly fix all the comments notifications issues at all, but it did help, at least in my experience. Thank you Vaishali <3

Emails Notifications yes, gone no matter what we do, or so I hear I've never used them. But bell Notifications for new comments should work though. Maybe it takes a little bit to start working?
