Winchester Model 70
The Winchester Model 70 is a classic American bolt-action rifle and one of the most popular and well-known bolt-action rifles in sports shooting history. It is used by not only sportsmen, but military and police snipers as well. Introduced by Winchester Repeating Arms in 1936 and is the successor to the Winchester Model 54. Like its predecessor, its action is based largely on that of the Mauser Gewehr 1898. From 1936 to 1964, the Model 70 gained a reputation for reliability and its robust action, and was originally manufactured with a Mauser-style claw extractor, amongst other safety and convenience features.
In 1964, amidst increased competition from sporting rifles like the Remington 700 and increased material and labor costs, a number of changes to the design were introduced to reduce manufacturing costs. Chief among these was a redesign to the bolt and removal of the claw extractor, replaced with a significantly weaker wedge extractor. Model 70s manufactured before 1964, usually referred to as the "pre-1964", are more sought after as they are widely considered to be of higher quality and include more features. From 1980 to 2006, the Model 70 was manufactured under license by the U.S. Repeating Arms Company, one of the successors to the original Winchester, until the closure of Winchester's original New Haven, Connecticut production plant. Since 2007, new Model 70s are made by FN Herstal under the Winchester name in Portugal.
In addition to extensive police use worldwide, the Model 70 series was used by the United States Marine Corps in World War II, the Korean War, and the Vietnam War. Perhaps the rifle's most famous user was Marine Corps sniper Carlos Hathcock, who used a Model 70 in .30-06 as his primary sniper rifle throughout his service in Vietnam.
The Winchester Model 70 has been manufactured in the following calibers: .22 Hornet, .222 Remington, 22-250 Remington, .223 WSSM, .225 Winchester, .220 Swift, .243 Winchester, .243 WSSM, .250-3000 Savage, .25-06 Remington, .25 WSSM, .257 Roberts, .264 Winchester Magnum, .270 Winchester, .270 WSM, 7mm Mauser, 7mm Remington Magnum, 7mm WSM, .300 Savage, .30-06 Springfield, .308 Winchester, .300 H&H Magnum, .300 Winchester Magnum, .300 WSM, .300 RUM, .325 WSM, .338 Winchester Magnum, .35 Remington, .358 Winchester, .375 H&H Magnum, and .458 Winchester Magnum. The action is currently available in short or long, corresponding to cartridge length. The blind magazine capacity varies, depending upon the calibers, from three to five. Standard calibers have five round capacities, larger rounds have a four round capacities and magnum rounds have a three round capacity.
