What Are LED Flood Light Bulbs?

A flood light bulb is a powerful light source that illuminates a large area. However, the term flood light is also often applied to spot light bulbs because they share similar bulb shapes. A spot light bulb illuminates a narrower area than a flood light.

To identify whether a bulb is actually a flood light or a spot light, look at the bulb’s beam angle. A bulb labelled as a flood with a beam angle under 45° is typically a spot light, whereas a flood bulb with a beam angle greater than 45° is a true flood light.

Flood light bulbs are used for both indoor and outdoor lighting. Flood lights are the most commonly used bulb type for outdoor applications. Residential uses include security lighting, landscape lighting, and holiday decor.

Remembering the differences between these 4 types of reflectors isn’t necessary to buy the best flood for your needs, since these reflectors are also sorted out by application.

  • BR bulbs are best in places where you need a broad pattern of light without being overwhelming, such as over a kitchen countertop or in a hallway.

  • PAR bulbs are most often designated as spot lights, making them ideally suited for applications that require a strong but focused beam of light, such as in track lighting and to display artwork.

  • R and MR bulbs tend to have very specific applications, so you’ll likely use this style if you are replacing an old R or MR bulb.

Flood Lighting Tips

Depending on the bulb’s base type, installing a flood light bulb can be similar to installing traditional A-shaped bulbs.

If the flood light bulb in use has a medium screw base, simply twist the bulb into the fixture. For bulbs with more specialized bases, such as a bi-pin base, line up the pins and press the bulb into the socket.

Types of LED Flood Light Bulbs

Similar to A-shaped bulbs, LED flood light bulbs are differentiated by diameter and design. The diameter can be measured with the number code by referring to it as 1/8”. Using a R20 bulb as an example, the number 20 would represent 20 eighths of an inch, which would mean that the diameter of the bulb is 2.5”.

LED flood light bulbs are in the traditional reflector shape as seen in incandescent floods, but each letter code represents differences in their design. Each design has different applications and benefits making it easy to find an option.

R Bulbs

The R stands for the reflector coating that extends the direction the light is emitted. Because this feature can make these lights much brighter, R LED light bulbs are usually frosted, creating a softer light and reducing any glare. R bulbs are the most common type of flood lighting found in homes. Their rounded lens creates fewer shadows which is perfect for display lighting and any place in the house where there is a lot of foot traffic, such as the kitchen and living room.

BR Bulbs

BR stands for bulged reflector and they have a wider beam angle that can be as large as 120°. The wider light distribution makes them ideal for recessed fixtures and track lighting. These light bulbs are perfect when extra lighting is needed in a space, and with LED BR light bulbs that effect can happen without compromising energy savings. Their lens is typically diffused to prevent bright spots, creating a softer atmosphere.

PAR Bulbs

PAR stands for parabolic aluminized reflector which means the aluminized reflector is shaped into a parabola. This design concentrates and intensifies the light beam in one direction, making them ideal for use in spot lighting. They also have a thicker housing that typically makes them suitable for use outdoors and in damp locations. Because of this, PAR LED light bulbs are one of the most versatile lights in their applications.

MR Bulbs

MR stands for multifaceted reflector, meaning it’s made with a pressed glass reflector creating an almost diamond effect with many small facets. When they were first designed, LED MR light bulbs were originally used only for slide projectors, but because of their compact size they can now be used in several applications. They are most commonly used in track and landscape lighting and can be seen in other places such as retail display lighting.

AR Bulbs

The AR abbreviation stands for aluminum-facetted reflector which, like MR light bulbs, has multiple facets that creates an exact beam angle that can be concentrated down to 8°. The precise beam angle makes AR LED light bulbs ideal for showrooms and galleries where lighting can draw attention to all the right details.
