Sep 03, 2015 — ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) Canada goose hunting season has started in upstate New York and state wildlife officials estimate there are about 240,000 of the birds living year-round in the state.
The Department of Environmental Conservation advises hunters to consult the agency's website to find season dates for various regions.
Duck hunting season starts later in the fall, beginning with youth hunts. Season dates and bag limits are detailed on the DEC website.
A special conservation season for snow geese, in addition to the regular hunting seasons, will be open in all of upstate New York from January 16 through April 15.
Biologists say snow geese have become so abundant they're causing harm to wetland habitats throughout their range. Special seasons have been established in many eastern states to reduce the population.
