U.S. land border crossings with Canada will remain closed at least until April 21.

The border has been closed for almost a year.

Thursday's extension was announced by the Department of Homeland Security.

DHS officials explained that the countries “determined that non-essential travel ... poses additional risk of transmission and spread of the virus.”

It is the second 30-day extension made by the Biden Administration despite pressure from officials in northern border states.

In January, Canada imposed new COVID-19 testing requirements for some travelers entering the country.
