    Lesson Planning Sheet Title: Highest Common Factor & Lowest Common Multiple Learning Objectives: By the end

    of the lesson: All students should be able to calculate the LCM and HCF of a pair of integers using Prime Factors Most students should be able to calculate the LCM and HCF of any number of integers using Prime Factors Some students should be able to solve real life problems through the use of calculating the HCF or LCM. Key words: Lowest Common Multiple, Highest Common Factor, Prime Factors Learning Activities Starter/Introduction Students recap breaking down integers using prime factors. Work through the first problem with the students then have them complete the remainder on mini-whiteboards in order to assess prior learning. Development Break down the two numbers into their respective prime factors. For the HCF calculate the product of the common prime factors. LCM = remaining prime factors multiplied by the HCF. Go through several examples with a clear written method so that students are able to see how the prime factors are used. Have the students work through some problems on miniwhiteboards so that progress can be measured. Once the students are ready they should work through the problems on the third slide independently. Have the students demonstrate the solutions through the lesson so that pace is maintained. Work through the real life problem with the students highlighting the key words so that the mathematics can be applied. Plenary Present the final slide where the students are expect to apply distinguish between the real life application of the HCF and LCM. Encourage the students to work together determine whether the HCF or LCM is being sought. Have a student demonstrate the solution at the end. Differentiation More able: Students should practise solving more real life problems. Less Able Students should practise on applying the skill to integers less than 100. Resources: Mini-whiteboards
