Gutenberg Docx 2
Between the 1450s to then 1455s the bible was completed, there was meant to be 200 copies made of it on materials such as animal skin and rag cotton linen paper however nobody knows for sure exactly how many copies were made. Today only 22 copies exist. Gutenberg was the first person to think of the revolutionary idea of a movable-type printing press. Before his idea books were made using carved pieces of wood with words on that would be inked and then pressed on to a piece of paper. Although this meant there was some kind of printing and books, they were hard to make, time consuming and expensive. Because of this Gutenberg wanted to invent something to make printing effectively so that large quantities if books could be produces. This is when the idea of movable-type printing was introduced. Movable-type printing was the idea of a more sustainable was of printing multiple copies of books. It was the idea of instead of making wooden blocks with only one page of something on. They could now using single, movable letters to make one page then move them to make another. Re-using the letters to change and easily make more copies. Gutenbergs invention of the first movable-type printing was a massive break through in the history of the printing press. It meant that hundreds of copies of books could be printed a lot quicker and easier. The first book made using Gutenbergs invention was the Bible, this was very important because it was the most read and wanted book at the time, therefore for Gutenberg to be able to make hundreds of copies quickly it meant everyone could get one. This included the poor, at this time only the rich could afford books because they took a lot of time and effort to make before Gutenbergs invention. But now books were becoming more and more accessible to everyone.
