4/5H learning about Japans Culture
This term 4/5H are excited to be learning about Japan's culture, man-made and
natural landmarks and their history of natural disasters. They will also study
Japanese artists and practise some of their techniques, especially how to paint and
represent cherry blossoms. We are also studying the novel "Sadako and the 1000
Paper Cranes", which relates to the effects that the bombing of Hiroshima had on the
family. It is a sad story but an important one to read.

Due to the change in the way we
manage money here at GEPS.
Unfortunately we cannot receipt any
additional money other than the $75
deposit until 2015. Should you have any
questions, please call the school.
Last week I witnessed what could have been
a very serious accident when kindergarten
and preschool aged children were pushing a
pram around the COLA and stairs with a
baby strapped in the pram. Young children
do not have the spatial awareness that
adults do and a very severe accident was
averted when a parent stopped the pram
from tumbling down the stairs. Whilst it is
not the schools place to tell you how to
manage your babies, had that accident
occurred the school would have been called
on to be the first responders to what could
have been very very serious! Please
exercise sound judgement in the care of all
children whilst on the school grounds.
Will take place on Wednesday 29
th

October. Please note that only Glendale
East Public School students are invited
to attend the disco and as this is a P&C
run event parents will need to remain on
site to supervise their children.
2015 Canberra Excursion
Year 6
Next Tuesday students in year 6 who are
attending Glendale High School will be
attending sports gala day between 11 and
3pm. There has been a note sent home
regarding this event and we wish our year
6 students the best of luck.
Grandparents Day
Next Friday 24
th
October will be our
Grandparents day. Grandparents are
invited to attend the school at 10:45 come
to classes for half an hour and read a
book and talk with students.
Grandparents can then stay for lunch if
they wish. School will not be providing
lunch on this day.
There has been a fantastic response to
the swim school expressions of interest
and this will take place in weeks 6 and 7
of this term, commencing 10
th
November
for 10 days.
New Assistant Principal
Our new Assistant Principal has been
appointed following the interview process.
Mr Paul McLean will be commencing at
Glendale East in 2015 and he comes to us
from Annandale North Public School in
Sydney where he has been relieving as the
Assistant Principal. Mr Mclean was highly
recommended and we look forward to him
commencing. He will be journeying up the
freeway a couple of times before the end of
the school year to meet the kids and help
develop our school plan for the next 3
years. He is very keen to meet all the
children and parents also!
Daily PE

The school will be re-introducing daily
PE in as a trial for the next 6 weeks.
There is a significant amount of
research supporting the benefits of
physical activity before going into class
suggesting that it improves,
concentration, reduces negative
behaviour and in the long term as we
all know has significant positive
impacts on physical and mental health.
To accommodate this bell times will be
adjusted slightly throughout the day to
ensure that no learning time is missed.
The PE program will be a high intensity
interval training type activity developed
by a highly experienced personal
trainer, requiring minimal to no
equipment and which can be delivered
by all staff. Please encourage your
children to participate to the best of
their ability. We will review the impacts
of this trial later in the term to decide
wether it will form part of our 2015-17
plan.
Entry to Government
Selective High Schools for Year
7 entry in 2016
The application information booklet will also
be available on the High Performing
Students Units website at:
www.schools.nsw.edu.au/shsplacement.

Parents without internet access or who
cannot use a computer have been told they
can apply at a public library but it would be
greatly appreciated if schools could make
their facilities available at a specific time to
assist the small minority of parents without
internet access. Parents with disabilities that
preclude the use of a computer are told to
contact the High Performing Students Unit
for assistance.

It is very important to note that late
applications will not be accepted so
principals are asked to be vigilant in advising
parents about the closing date.

Principals will be updated regularly about
applications from students at their schools as
they are received by the High Performing
Students Unit so they can prepare their
school assessment scores. Principals or their
delegates will enter school assessment
scores for the students from their school
from 24 November 2014 to 9 December
2014.

All students wanting to go to a selective high
school for Year 7 in 2016 will have to take
the Selective High School Placement Test on
the morning of Thursday 12 March 2015.

There are 17 fully selective high schools, 25
partially selective high schools, 4 selective
agricultural high schools and one virtual
selective high school offering selective
placement in Year 7 in NSW.
Applications for placement in Year 7 at
a selective high school in 2016 will be
open to parents of students in Year 5
from 14 October to 17 November 2014.

Multiple copies of an application
information booklet will be sent to public
schools around 14 October 2014 for
distribution to parents along with a
template letter to parents that can be
used by schools to ask parents to
express their interest in applying for
selective high school placement for their
children.
News from 5/6BM...

Peer Support Program

At the end of last term 5/6BM were
involved in Peer Support training with
Mrs Mantle in preparation for the
program to start this Friday afternoon
and going through to week 8.

The aim of the Peer Support program is
to teach and reinforce a variety of social
skills ( in a small group of mixed aged
peers) such as sharing, including others,
how to be a good friend, how to
approach and join in groups and
standing up for yourself.

As the leaders running the program, we
learnt effective management strategies
when teaching social skills to our small
groups of 11-13 students and we also
learnt ways to be a good leader for our
group.

The children will be mixed into 16 groups
from different year levels and each group
and their leaders will have a teacher
assigned to their groups for
encouragement and feedback.

All the leaders in 5/6BM are looking
forward to getting to know our groups
and having lots of fun!
By Lily C and Jasmine G
In term 3, the students in 5/6BM were
reading a novel called 68 Teeth by the
Australian author, James Moloney.
During our study of the text we looked at
the techniques used by the author to
create a strong, decisive character who
dominated a weaker character. We used
descriptive language, imagery, similes
and strong verbs in our writing.

The Horrific Battle
An exhausted girl strolled through the
muddy jungle watching a baby monkey
fall through the leaves of a tree. A
fearsome Bengal tiger pounced through
the damp shrubs, fast as a hungry
cheetah and as fierce as a crocodile. Its
extremely sharp claws carved through the
soft, fragile skin resting in the shrub. A
desperate monkey yowled in distress. But
it had only just begun. The tiger never lost
its focus. It was already yanking its
delirious target back towards the shrub.
The little girl ran away in fright not even
stopping to watch the horrific battle.

The African Attack
An African boy travelling in an old
camouflaged truck is videoing a young elk
hop amongst the tall, dry grass. A
powerful white lion stormed through the
dead bushes, sly as a sneaky fox and as
fast as a humming bird. Its piercing sharp
teeth punctured the tiny neck lying in the
grass. A desperate baby elk kicked with
fear. But the lion was just starting. It didn't
stop for a minute. The lion was already
eating its innocent prize under the shady
tree. The other elk hopped with fear not
even looking back to have a glimpse.

Caps are not hats...
Please be aware that the school expects
all students to be dressed in full school
uniform. This means the wearing of a hat,
bucket style, preferably with school logo.
There have been a number of students
wearing caps to school. If students do
present at school with a cap they will not
be permitted to play on the open grounds
and will need to remain under the COLA
for the lunch and recess breaks

P & C News
The P&C will be having a Halloween fancy dress disco on Wednesday 29
th
October. The
disco will start at 6pm and finish at 8pm. Parental supervision will be required for this
event. There will be snacks and drinks available for purchase as well as novelty glow
products. Tickets are $5 per child or $10 a family (3 or more children). This event is for
Glendale East Public School students only.

Last term the P&C held their Fathers day stall which went really well. I would like to
thank all the people who were involved in the organisation of the stall. Maryanne Barry
for organising the gifts, Rhonda Beatty, Kelly Richens, Nicole Mannix, Melissa Rawe,
Melaine Wade and Emma Morgan for helping at the stall. Your time is always
appreciated.
