The total automotive paints and coatings market in Argentina is expected to grow to almost 30 million liters in volume by 2017 and more
than triple in terms of revenues.
According to Frost & Sullivan, automotive manufacturing in Argentina is forecasted to grow steadily and reach more than 900,000
units of vehicles produced by 2017, while the domestic car fleet is expected to grow at a 3.3 percent CAGR. The refinish segment in Argentina will grow at a higher rate than the OEM segment, mainly due
to car fleet continuous growth, increasing used car sales, high car insurance penetration, and Argentine car owners who take care of their
cars more than in other regional countries.
BASF, DuPont, PPG, Sherwin Williams and Akzo Nobel are the
biggest market participants, and for the forecasted period, these companies will have to address big challenges. Increasing raw material
prices, domestic import restrictions and governmental pressure toward
a self-sustaining automotive and chemical industry are expected to be
the top challenges in the market. In this sense, companies will be
obliged to manufacture their products locally and export in order to
level their trade balances. On the other hand, the national government, through the Ministry of Industry, designed the National Industrial
Plan 2020 that will support the chemical and petrochemical industry
and plans to increase automotive manufacturing up to 1.9 million units
by 2020 and registrations up to 1.6 million units.
A bright future for the automotive paints and coatings market in
Argentina is thus expected during the next five years.

materials are sold for OLED, epaper and plasma display sectors
as well as for the market-dominant LCDs.
Although the display lms business is
mature, NanoMarkets identies OLED displays as presenting a strong long-term market for lm makers as OLEDs begin to take
market share from traditional LCD strongholds such as mobile displays and televisions.
Like LCDs, OLEDs will use antiglare/antireection lms, but their success will also
boost certain kinds of specialist lms. One
opportunity is lms designed to increase the
color uniformity of OLEDs at wider viewing angles. Another is certain kinds of polarizer lms that improve the bright light
readability of OLEDs. And, according to the
report, more immediate opportunities can
still be found in the LCD lm business.
By 2016, contrast/color enhancement
lms for LCDs will bring in almost $300
million. NanoMarkets remains bullish on
this sector, because there is a growing tendency among LCD makers to shift production towards higher performance
displays that urgently need these kinds of
lms. This shift is being driven by competition from both OLEDs and sophisticated
consumers looking for a 3-D/HD visual
environment. These lms may also be
combined with antiglare/antireection
lms to create multifunctional products,
reducing costs further. CW

The

Market
The auto refinish market remains flat in North America, but improving standards of living
in developing countries are leading to an increase in cars in Asia and South America.
by Kerry Pianoforte, Associate Editor
he auto renish market continues to perform sluggishly
in mature markets like North America. However, growing
afuence and an increase in car ownership in emerging
regions, has given the auto renish market a much-needed boost.
The market is at to declining in North America while growing in developing regions like Asia and South America, said Victoria Manea, market development manager, dispersions and
pigments, North America, BASF. In these latter regions, the
higher consumer spending power and standards of living have
led to an increase in car ownership which, combined with poor
quality roads and frequent trafc accidents, are causing a boost
in the renish market.
Ever since the nancial crisis of 2008, weve been confronted
with a challenging market for our business and we expect it to
remain pretty at for the foreseeable future, said Kerstin Stranimaier, marketing director, AkzoNobel. When we look at individual markets, there are however plenty of opportunities. No
one is going to complain about safer cars and fewer accidents,
but those positive developments do of course affect our business,
especially in our more established markets like Western Europe

ROW interest continues to grow as well. Matrix System Automotive Finishes has been the leader in Tier 2 paint lines for decades.
Consolidation has been a talking point for many years, however the last two years have seen the most activity, said Brunori.
Several major and many smaller acquisitions have changed the
dynamics of the industry at the street level and we anticipate a
lot more consolidation at the jobber level throughout this year.
The organizations reputation and relationships will become vital
as we move forward. Bottom line is people want to do business
with people they trust.
Sustainability, low VOC and other environmental issues will
continue to be important issues for auto renish manufacturers.
Market trends observed are toward water-based technology
for basecoats and low VOC in general, said Manea. Most important market needs are for sustainable technologies and
processes that enable increased productivity: quick to apply,
clean sustainable and easy to apply.
I dont think its possible to overestimate the importance of
waterborne technologies, said Strainimaier. A few years ago,
there were doubters, but weve achieved critical mass now, and
the whole industry in Europe and North America is changing
over. We are continuously improving our waterborne systems
most recently with a new generation that you see in our upgraded Sikkens Autowave products.
Its obvious that sustainability will continue to be a priority
in the marketplace, added Strainimaier. Customers want improved health and safety; they want to create more pride, satisfaction and loyalty; they want to use less energy and carbon, less
water and create less waste; and they want smart facility planning and design. Because by doing so they will grow sales and
improve their prot margins. And were there to help them
achieve these goals. With our sustainable value proposition we
help to future-proof our customers businesses body shops
and repair specialists. We nd, by the way, that a lot of work
providers insurance companies and eet owners, for example
share our values.
Regulatory topics will continue to gain momentum in many
parts of the U.S., according to Brunori. The VOC changes in
Canada, the addition of several air quality districts in California, and activities around Lake Michigan (LADCO) and the
Northeastern region (OTC) indicate the commitment to reducing
VOC emissions, he said. There are several techniques to comply with the lower basecoat VOC limits either water-based or
solvent-based. Matrix System offers both technologies; Aqualu-

tion waterborne or MPB-LV solventborne basecoats. Our development chemists are working on new hybrid technologies to ensure compliance for many years to come.
Our chemists are diligently working on advanced crosslinking platforms for the future topcoats and undercoats, said
Brunori. Advancements in pigment dispersion technologies and
waterborne resin platforms are always of interest to our formulators. The goal is to continue to bring value and technological
advancements at the same time to our customers. This theme resonates throughout our organization.
While meeting environmental regulations is certainly one of
the most important issues, meeting customers needs at a reasonable price is equally important.
Lower/unstable demand in certain regions of the world has
made customers more cautious with respect to inventory management (destocking), said Manea.BASF sees this as an opportunity
to engage our customers to understand the specic demands that
they are facing and construct programs to assist them.
According to Brunori, the key issue for many renish customers is price point and quality. Value paints are the fastest
growing market segments that our industry has ever seen, he
added. Customers are demanding a lower price alternative without sacricing color match or performance. There are more Tier
2 paint companies in our industry than ever before; with more
entering the U.S. market from around the world each year. Economic pressures and quality equal to the major paint manufacturers have accelerated the consumption of these products.
Matrix System has provided the industry great products at a
value price for many years. Matrix System employees remain
well-grounded to our roots and sensitive to the conditions our
customers are operating in. Our business model satises the market demand more today than it did 30 years ago.
When it comes to auto renish, color matching is probably
the biggest priority.
In the end, our customers care about one thing above all
delivering a perfect repair to their customers, said Strainimaier.
The quality of the products and the efciency of the processes
are absolutely key for them, but the number one priority is to
get the color right color excellence, if you will. We are constantly investing in the technologies and services to make certain
they can get it right, and get it right the rst time, every time.
Thats about databases of colors, and about software and tools.
We think the future is with 100% digital systems for color recognition and color formulation. We have those capabilities now, in
our Sikkens and Lesonal systems, and weve got some key customers who have switched over from the traditional system using
color documentation in the form of chips and visual matching to
fully digital, with our AM3 spectrophotometer and our color
management software.
Apart from that, AkzoNobel is doing a lot to help its customers with more efcient processes, so that their throughput is
higher which translates to higher protability. We do it with
support and training, with a real emphasis on partnership, said
Strainimaier. Customers also are looking at ways to reduce
waste and cut energy consumption, and we are trying to respond

New Products
Over the last four years, AkzoNobel has had a partnership with
the Vodafone McLaren Mercedes Formula 1 racing team, and
some of the spinoffs from that cooperation are now nding their
way into its products. For example, weve got a new UV-curable
ller that were now introducing as Sikkens click&go UV Surfacer, said Strainimaier. Its packaged in an innovative unit that
you can effortlessly click on to your spray gun, and it cures in 5
minutes when exposed to UV-A light. So that delivers speed, convenience, performance, low energy consumption quite a lot of
performance in one new product.
Another spinoff from AkzoNobel is Autoclear Matt 12, a
two-pack matting nish consisting of low gloss and semi-gloss
components for application over all basecoats. The customer
can control the level of gloss in the product by altering the mix
of the two components, Strainimairer added. Both of those
products are examples of the Creating Together theme weve
featured in our Sikkens global marketing campaign working
with our customers and our partners to develop innovative products and solutions.
AkzoNobel also just broke ground in Changzhou, China for
a new manufacturing site, along with ofce, research, warehousing and support facilities. Its one of the biggest investments
weve ever made, and it will add 25 million liters of production
capacity straight away, with the potential to triple that as the
market grows, said Strainimaier. Thats the real proof of our
commitment to the Chinese market. If it all goes according to
plan, it will be ready in 2014.
Matrix System was the rst Tier 2 paint company to offer the
renish market an alternative to waterborne basecoats by launching MSB-LV Low VOC solvent basecoat. Other paint companies
scrambled to add this alternative basecoat to their portfolio, which
have some deciencies which included; decreased opacity, difcult
to apply, reduction of alternates/variant formulas and minimal use
of Xirillic pigments for late model vehicles, said Brunori. Matrix
System solved all of these issues by launching our MPB-LV Coast
to Coast Premium Low VOC Basecoat into the market. MPB-LV
is a state-of-the-art technology that offers exceptional performance and consistent results similar to that of a national rule
basecoat. Our solvent based MPB-LV has made compliance easy
by giving our customers a premium basecoat that solve color ac-

Gareth Hughes, director of technology and global platform marketing, PPG Automotive Renish. This new clear can be air
dried as fast as it once took to bake a clearcoat nish just a few
years ago. One obvious benet of air dry capability is its ability
to reduce the workload on the baking booth, while saving on the
energy costs to operate it.
We recently launched PET (polyethylene terephthalate)
primers in Germany, Hughes continued. This new advance that
incorporates recycled plastic bottles into our resin systems is part
of PPGs drive to develop environmentally-sustainable products
offering signicant advantages over existing technology.
Over the past 10 years, PPG has been signicantly expanding
its global renish presence, both from within and through acquisitions. Max Meyer, Orica, ICI Autocolor, Protec and Bonny
are just some of the acquisitions that have enhanced PPGs value
proposition for the auto renish industry. CW

opacity and UV protection. Titanium dioxide absorbs UV radiation, thereby protecting and extending a products lifetime. It delivers efcient whiteness and brightness for excellent hiding power,
said BC Chong, president of DuPont Titanium Technologies.
Like carbon black, demand for titanium dioxide was down
this year. The titanium dioxide market demand is down this
year, but we expect a recovery in 2013 and we remain condent
in our titanium dioxide outlook for the longer term, said Chong.
Titanium dioxide demand is expected to grow with GDP and
DuPont, the most innovative titanium dioxide company, will
benet from this growth. In addition, our signicant new capacity expansion will allow us to grow with our customers.
According to Frank Lavieri, executive vice president and general manager at Lansco Colors, the demand for white pigments
has grown substantially over the last year such that it has outstripped supply for a time. Supply and demand has been more
balanced now but during the previous year Lansco Colors sales
of white pigments increased substantially, he said. We are nding more and more customers are being careful to use the best
value titanium dioxide for each application, whereas in the past
they may have been more inclined to use only one higher performance grade. The best value grade is the one which meets all
of the requirements for the application at the lowest cost and,
importantly, is not over engineered.
Both carbon black and white pigment manufacturers have
launched a number of new products. For the coatings market
Emerald Hitlon Davis offers zero VOC, formaldehyde-free, APEfree Verdis dispersion products.
This is a full line of colorants including carbon black dispersion that offers high quality colors for in-plant tinting, said

called Lucida Colors. Lucida Colors ECF is a full line of high
performance pigment and trans-oxide color products to meet the
needs in the emerging energy cure coatings market. Emerald
Hilton Davis also offers a wide range of specialty water-based
black dispersions.
Cabot recently launched Emperor 1800, a high color carbon
black designed for ease of dispersion in water-based systems.
The product is designed to be used in automotive and other
high-end applications, said Preneta. Cabot also has a complete
line of resistive carbon blacks use in display applications, the
TPK series of carbon blacks. These materials enable higher resolution displays and next generation touch panel architectures.
Cabot also has a number of products coming later in 2012.
DuPont Titanium Technologies has been delivering Ti-Pure
products to the coatings industry for more than 80 years.
Our offering developments begins with the needs of the
worlds leading coatings customers, said Chong. Our research
in titanium dioxide is focused on delivering leading opacity solutions and maximizing our customers cost efciency to ensure
performance and competitiveness in the markets they serve.
DuPont Titanium Technologies has also announced a global expansion that will add 350,000 metric tons of capacity at its Altamira, Mexico site and several other site of its sites around the

Investments In China
Continue To Expand
As the paint, coatings, adhesives and sealants industries continue to grow in China so too
does the amount of investments being made there by manufacturers. Pictured above,

he paint and coatings industry has put a tremendous emphasis on the Chinese market where the largest international paint manufacturers all have built major operations
and continue to invest there.
Chinese paints and coatings consumption reached just over
11 million tons in 2011. More than one-third of the market was
occupied by architectural coatings. This dynamic market has
continued its growth trajectory despite the global economic recession by focusing on domestic market demand in the construction, automotive, and home appliances and consumer
electronics sectors.

ment in the countrys infrastructure. China has continued to invest in infrastructure development, including new bridges, landmark city buildings, alternative energy facilities, nuclear
generation plants, schools, and hospitals.
These factors have all contributed to double-digit growth in
the Chinese coatings market year every year since 2002, with the
exception of 2008, according to IRLs report, A Prole of the
Chinese Paint Industry. The report updates IRLs previous study
released in 2009 and includes the latest industry trends and upto-date statistics.
The report says over the next ve years market growth is expected to remain at a level of around 10 percent per year, with the
fastest growth being achieved in road marking paints, coatings for
plastics, automotive renishes and protective coatings. These
booming sectors will compensate for considerably slower growth
in automotive OEM coatings and wood coatings said the report.

at approximately 7.2 kg, indicating that there is still considerable potential for the market to grow further and penetrate into
the more underdeveloped regions of China.
The Chinese coatings industry continues to be highly fragmented, with as many as 20,000 manufacturers active in the
market, albeit on a very small scale for many. Future consolidation is highly likely as smaller players get pushed out through
environmental pressures and demand for more high quality
products from the end-users.
The key opportunities for future growth in the market will arise
from factors such as: the 18th Congress of the CCP (Chinese Communist Party) that was held in October 2012 and there will be pressure on the new leadership team to introduce measures to stimulate
the economy after many government incentives were pulled in
2011; the Chinese governments affordable housing program plans
to build 36 million new affordable dwellings over the next ve
years; huge regional disparities remain in China, with rural areas
offering opportunity for infrastructural development and as yet untapped consumer demand; rising car ownership, poor road conditions and a very low scrappage rate will all boost demand for
automotive renishes; the Chinese end-user industries will be looking for coatings offering environmental benets and safety features
(like lead-free, VOC-free, formaldehyde-free etc.), plus more functionality, in order to meet stricter standards (particularly for products destined for export) and serve the needs of discerning
consumers (especially the younger generations); and offshore engineering schemes and infrastructure development will bolster sales
of marine and protective coatings.
nishes market.
As well as constructing a new production facility in
Changzhou, the company will build related warehousing, quality control laboratories, support facilities and ofces on the new
site. The project will increase capacity by around 25 million liters
and the site is projected to be operational in early 2014.
This investment builds on last years acquisition of Prime Automotive and is all about meeting rapidly increasing customer demand, said Leif Darner, AkzoNobels executive committee
member responsible for performance coatings. We are also seizing
an ideal opportunity to further strengthen our leadership position.
The automotive and aerospace market in China is forecast
to further increase steeply in the coming years and this investment will allow us to capture our share of this growth, said Jim
Rees, managing director of AkzoNobels automotive and aerospace coatings business. Changzhou is the ideal location for this
facility as there is a good infrastructure already in place and it is
ideally situated in the coatings center of China, with close access
to many of our customers.
AkzoNobel currently employs around 6,700 people in China,
with revenue for 2010 totaling 1.3 billion, with a majority of the
revenue generated from local demand. The new site in Changzhou
will be the companys 29th manufacturing location in China.
AkzoNobels powder coatings business, Interpon, opened its
rst Powder School in China, offering customers an opportunity
to learn from their experts and improve the efciency and productivity of their powder application lines.
The Powder School is a service that offers customers hands-on
training in powder application, product testing and troubleshooting support, as well as opportunities to learn how to get the best
out of their production lines. Located within AkzoNobels Powder
Coatings Application Center in Ningbo, Zhejiang province, the

A Look at Chinas
Automotive Coatings Market
Repair and OEM coatings markets are fundamentally very different, as one shadows automotive production and the other follows more closely with customer preferences. Luke
Johnson, senior analyst at GCiS China Strategic Research, discusses some of the findings
from their recent market study on automotive coatings.
What were some of the general findings of the
report?
Luke Johnson, senior analyst at GCiS China Strategic Research:
Although the report was released in July 2012, the base year of the
study is 2011. The market study is broken into two main segments:
OEM coatings and repair coatings. Altogether, the market is worth
about RMB18 billion (USD2.9 billion), not including exports, and
more importantly, output is about 463,000 tons. The OEM market is signicantly bigger at about 313,000 tons, whereas the repair
coatings market is about 150,000 tons, growing at about 16 percent and 17.3 percent respectively.
50 | Coatings World
Besides passenger cars, busses, trucks and engineering equipment are also signicant users of the OEM and repair coatings.
For OEMs at least, buses and trucks account for about 75,000
tons of the total OEM coating gure.
One of the most interesting points is the complications of addressing the repair coatings market. Basically, repair coatings are
difcult to dene in China. A company, really only domestic, might
sell the same paint to repair shops as they do to low speed electric
vehicle, or even bus and truck, OEMs. This makes a total market
size difcult to dene, especially when you compare numbers offered by domestic companies with those of foreign companies.

in 2010, and sales in busses and trucks were also robust. But in
2011, automobile sales plummeted, and OEM coatings were affected by this.
OEM coatings sales do not reflect car sales perfectly, however. There are adjustments in the industry, like improved application techniques of newer production lines in China, which
will slightly decrease the average amount of coating used on a
single vehicle. Cars are getting larger in China with more and
more SUVs on the road, so that can somewhat counteract this
trend as well.
There are only about 60 vehicles per 1,000 people in China, so the market has a long way to grow before it is mature. When China reaches
300 cars per 1,000 people that would mean about 400 million cars on the road. If drivers buy a car about every 10 years or so thats about 40
million vehicles sold every year.

about 800 vehicles per 1,000 people; in Japan, the ratio is about
600 to 1,000. While in China, the absolute number of people is
much higher and the number of cars is much lower. Consequently, there are only about 60 vehicles per 1,000 people in
China, so we can see that the market has a long way to grow before it is mature. So if you could imagine when China reaches
300 cars per 1,000 peoplethats relatively modestthat would
mean about 400 million cars on the road. Now, roughly translating, if drivers buy a car about every 10 years or sothere are
10-year scrapping policies as a basis for this assumptionthats
about 40 million vehicles sold every year.
In 2011, there was about 18 million sold. Therefore, we
wouldnt say its saturatedalthough we see clogging effects in
big citiesbut as far as the country as a whole, there is good
reason why so many people are optimistic about the automobile market and automobile coatings in China. For the automobile coatings market, this translates to a healthy demand
for OEM coatings.

ver the past few years much has been said about the
amazing economic and industrial growth achieved by

China became the worlds second largest economy, exceeded
only in gross domestic product (GDP) by the U.S. Japan was a
distant third, eclipsed by China in 2001 with a repeat every

agricultural and industrial production both surpassed the dollar value of the U.S. output for 2010. In recent years China has
seen the evolution of a genuine middle class, which has fueled

With the maturing of the paint market in China, specialization in high value-added products has emerged as the key to
profitability. Commercial success no longer hinges on volume
or turnover but on high performance. At the same time, environmental considerations are exerting additional pressure on
product development. Most high performance coating systems
have their own drawbacks, requiring specific technical solutions, often based on complex and clever chemistry, for a problem-free application.
Much of the current R&D work thus focuses on the creation
of high performance products and technologies leading to high

productivity at the shop oor and high differentiation in the market place through the development of value added features and
functionalities based on innovative chemistry. Rising labor and
application costs, moreover, make long lasting high-durability
coatings particularly attractive since it helps delaying the maintenance interval thereby saving cost.
The topic of high-grade coatings is also important in the
face of mounting competition and the pressure on commoditization. A high quality coating is the key for high differentiation
and high growth.
The presentation of papers and post-presentation discussions
will be conducted in both English and Chinese (Putonghua).
The rst keynote will be delivered by Prof. Jamil Baghdachi,
Coatings Research Institute, Eastern Michigan University, U.S.,
on Monday, Nov. 26 at 10:00 a.m. Prof. Baghdachi will present,
High Grade Coatings: Technology Update. He says the two
driving forces of nanotechnology and smart coatings in the past
two decades have fueled vigorous research and development
work on polymeric coatings. The result of such movement has
been the development of high performance and high valued coating materials. These coatings not only function as protective and
decorative materials, they also push the performance envelop
well beyond traditional denition of coatings. Included in this
class of new developments are high temperature resistant polymeric coatings, stimuli responsive, super high solids liquid coatings, self-stratifying, superhydrophobic/superhydrophilic, and
biologically active and corrosion sensing coatings. This paper
provides a brief discussion of technology, properties and application of these high performance and high valued coatings.

Final Coat
The employees at HMG Paints are in a particularly swashbuckling mood this month with the DVD release of, The Pirates! In
an Adventure with Scientists, the latest animated lm to be produced by Aardman Animations.
Over the last three years, HMG
Paints, the UKs largest independent industrial paints manufacturer, have
worked alongside Aardman Animations
to supply them with a range of highly
specialized coatings. These were used to paint the puppet-stars of
the animated lm.
The lm follows the escapades of the boundlessly enthusiastic,
if somewhat less-than-successful Pirate Captains attempts to beat
his bitter rivals, Black Bellamy and Cutlass Liz to the much-coveted Pirate of the Year Award. Along the way, the Pirate Captain
and his rag-tag crew do battle with the pirate-hating Queen Victoria and team up with a young Charles Darwin, but never lose
sight of what a pirate loves best: adventure! The characters voices
are provided by an all-star cast featuring Hugh Grant, David Tennant, Imelda Staunton, Martin
Freeman, Jeremy Piven and other
members of Hollywoods elite.
Production for the film began
in 2007 and HMG Paints were
involved at a very early stage in
the project supplying the necessary coatings for the puppets. A
crew of 525 people worked on
the film, including 70 model
makers that used HMG Paints
products to bring color and life
to the 250 puppets created.
