PPGs Aerocron Electrocoat Primer Meets Aerospace Specication 3144 for Aircraft Applications
PPG Industries aerospace coatings group has qualified AEROCRON electrocoat primer to SAE Internationals Aerospace Material Specification 3144 for anodic electrodeposition primer for aircraft applications. Qualifying Aerocron primer to the aerospace industry standard provides airframe manufacturers and subcontractors with third-party verification of its performance characteristics and attributes, according to Duane Utter, PPG global coatings segment manager, military coatings and classified products. Four variations of the PPG chromate-free primer have been qualified to AMS 3144 in order to meet specific customer or regional requirements.. Primer provides corrosion resistance to metal parts and is typically applied by spraying. In the electrocoating, or electrodeposition, process, metal parts are dipped into an electrically charged tank of Aerocron primer.
BASF and OEMs Develop ASTM Test Standard for Transportation Coatings
A collaborative 14-year effort involving BASF, automotive and aerospace original equipment manufacturers (OEMs), material suppliers and test equipment manufacturers has resulted in a new American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) test standard for transportation coatings. The new method is 30 to 40 percent faster than the previous test standard used for many OEMs, and improves the accuracy to nearly 100 percent in predicting coating service life compared to less than 50 percent with the previous standard. Industry implementation of this new test can speed new product development, and aid in the development of better overall products for the coating industry. This test can be used for automobiles, aircrafts, trucks and rail cars. Officially named ASTM D786913 Standard Practice for Xenon Arc Exposure Test with Enhanced Light and Water Exposure for Transportation Coatings, the new test simulates physical and environmental stresses that an exterior transportation coating is exposed to in a subtropical climate. These stresses include long water exposures, wet/dry cycling, and high dosages of solar radiation, all of which have been shown to cause severe coatings deterioration.
The new test conditions consist of a primary test cycle and a sub-cycle. The primary test includes two long water exposures and a single, long light exposure with precise spectral match to daylight. The sub-cycle consists of shorter alternating water and light exposures and is designed to simulate cyclic stresses such as cracking and surface erosion. These two cycles are designed to replicate the common types of coatings failures driven by the interaction of photo-oxidation during daylight and hydrolysis during water exposure. Together, these failures can lead to gloss loss, color change, adhesion, blistering and cracking. BASF has been active in the ASTM D-01 committee on accelerated weathering for many years, and began efforts in test development in response to a customer issue. BASF brought key partners together, developed the critical coating formulas for testing, and conducted several important experiments in the physical test laboratories, which resulted in the new test method.

Zepol Reports U.S. Imports in 2013 Were the Highest in Six Years
Zepol Corp. reports that U.S. vessel imports were up 3.7 percent from 2012, which totaled more than 18.2 million TEUs (twenty-foot container) brought into the U.S. last year. U.S. imports in 2013 started off at a slow start but ended with a surge from July through December. Annual TEUs havent been this high since 2007, which is a good sign for a strong recession rebound in the U.S. trade industry, Zepol reported. So far in 2014, the first three weeks of imports in January are already 5.2 percent higher than the same time last year. It was a surprise to see 2013 imports so high since the beginning of the year was relatively stagnant, said U.S. trade expert and CEO of Zepol Paul Rasmussen, but imports have continued to expand during the recent economic recovery and factors like a dropping unemployment rate and a busy holiday shopping season may be positive contributors for U.S. importers. We expect the increasing trend to continue as we move into 2014.
with excellent growth prospects, producers of EPS in several industrialized countries are able to profit from state-subsidies targeted at increasing energy efficiency. Even on saturated markets, this can provide growth impulses. In the end, consumption of styrene depends on the demand of consumers for the different styrene based products. Thus, emerging countries exhibiting strong economic growth and a rising income offer a considerable potential. Conditions as propitious as these attract investment in the expansion of the downstream styrene industry. On the long term, this will lead to an establishing of an ever larger part of the value creation chain in these countries. As result, demand for styrene in some countries will rise significantly. An example for a development of this kind is China. In the past eight years, demand for styrene in this country rose by 9.6 percent per year. China is the worldwide largest sales market, accounting for 31.5 percent of market shares in 2012. The U.S. followed at a considerable distance, after demand for styrene fell by, on average, 1.9 percent p.a. since 2004. Global production of styrene is increasingly relocating to emerging countries, while developed industrialized regions reduced capacities considerably in the last few years, especially Western Europe and the U.S. This shift was triggered by a previous excessive increase of production capacity at a time when demand for styrene rose at less dynamic rates or even declined in the aftermath of the global economic crisis. An effect of this process was the decline of global capacity utilization to 75 percent in 2009. While production capacities were relocated, degree of global capacity utilization rose again. This development is likely to continue; we forecast the highest relative increase of styrene production until 2020 to occur in South America and the Middle East. The production capacity in these countries with extensive crude oil resources will increase to 4.8 million tons in 2020. Ceresana expects output in South America to increase by, on average, 13.4 percent p.a. during the next eight years. CW

The statistics, reported by El Financiero, cited the governments La Promotora de Comercio Exterior (Procomer) export agency, which also indicates that the top ten manufacturers export $44 million worth of paint annually. The largest exporting manufacturers in Costa Rica include: Colombias Pintuco, which owns the Kativo brand and manufacturers the Protecto, Glidden and Vastalux brands; Grupo Sur, which owns the Sur and Koral Brands; Comex and Lanco. Among non-exporting paint companies are: Sherwin-Williams, which markets its Excello acrylic latex line; Corporacin BBG, which markets the BBG and Ultra Plus lines; and Fibrocentro, which markets the Pinturama brand. Kativo operates three production facilities in the region, in Costa Rica, Honduras and Panama, and operates a technical center in Costa Rica serving its 68 stores in Central America. Kativo was purchased by Pintuco in August 2012. Lanco produces its Lanco brand at one production plant in the country at Alajuela. Mexicos Comex distributes in Costa Rica and the rest of the region, with a total of some 90 points of sale. And in the pipe coatings segment, Lord Corp. recently forged a joint venture in Costa Rica with Terramix. Costa Ricas five million inhabitants enjoy a gross domestic product of approximately $45 billion, with a relatively high associated per capita income of $11,000. This compares with approximately $8,000 for the region and $13,000 for Panama, according to one think tank. As such, the availability of disposable income for home paints is relatively strong. Where domestic consumption levels finally fail, exports pick up. Among neighboring country importers of Costa Rican paint, Panama leads, taking one-third of the production, followed by Nicaragua, which takes approximately 20 percent

of Costa Rican production. In 2012, market analyst IRL identified Honduras as an export destination for substandard paints from unidentified sources. Costa Ricas economy is expected to undergo a boost from the Presidential election on January 2, in which academic Luis Guillermo Solis, gained a slight lead over ruling party candidate Johnny Araya; a runoff vote is still expected. Despite a pro-growth platform, the outgoing government has suffered from corruption scandals. Costa Rica has long been known as the business capital of Central America, and has played a pivotal role in regional development, as well. In June of last year, Costa Rica helped forge the Central AmericaMexico Free Trade Agreement, and in 2006 it helped create the Dominican Republic-Central AmericaUnited States Free Trade Agreement (CAFTA-DR). Central America is comprised of seven countries: Belize; Costa Rica; El Salvador; Guatemala; Honduras; Nicaragua and Panama. Last year when U.S. President Barack Obama visited Costa Rica, he vowed to shift U.S. focus on the region to economic development. U.S. trade with Central America was worth $61 billion in 2012. CW

by Sean Milmo European Correspondent [email protected] now at a stage where what is called exposure scenarios are being drawn up from the dossiers by both chemical suppliers and formulators to be distributed along the supply chain. They detail what users need to do to control hazardous chemicals. Exposure scenarios are one of the main innovations of the REACH regulation, said the European Chemicals Agency (ECHA), Helsinki, Finland, in a guidance document for downstream users issued in December. The agency is responsible for administering the legislation. Although the legislation has now been in operation for nearly seven years, there are still uncertainties about how to introduce and implement exposure scenarios. They have turned out to be far more intricate than expected.

Market
ecovery in the housing market has had a positive effect for both the professional and Do It Yourself (DIY) segments of the wood coatings market. Wood coatings manufacturers interviewed by Coatings World reported strong sales for 2013 and are optimistic for the future. Traditionally, many more deck care projects come from remodeling jobs or adding decks to existing homes versus new home construction, said Mike Kozlowski, director of marketing, Thompsons Water Seal. This helped keep our business relatively stable during the worst of the economic downturn. But theres no doubt that an improved economy both makes retailers and consumers more willing to expand, and weve definitely seen evidence of that in 2013. Barring any unforeseen events, 2014 should be a growth year. The recovery in the housing market has had a favorable impact on our business, agreed Bill Fiorillo, global market director kitchen cabinets and furniture at Sherwin-Williams. Orders for
residential furniture, wood building products and kitchen cabinets also increased for us in 2013, with some areas in the double digits. Key markets include kitchen cabinets, contract furniture, residential furniture, architectural millwork and retain store fixtures. Rust-Oleum continues to see strong sales in the wood coatings market. Consumer spending is growing as the economy continues to recover, said Mark Wilgen, Rust-Oleum director. The Professional market has also stabilized and started to grow. At the current time, homeowners are staying in their homes longer, and are investing more in the upkeep of their floors, decks, fences and siding, Wilgen added. Well maintained wood surfaces add to the value of the home and saves money in the long term. Homeowners will spend more to ensure the products they used to finish their wood surfaces not only look good, but will also last. They dont want to invest time and money on a product that will only hold up for one season. They want a product that will beatifies while also protecting the surface for years to come.

Wood coatings must withstand harsh conditionals and maintain their aestetic appeal. Customers are looking for a variety of performance attributes in their wood coating products. The products must not only be able to withstand harsh environments, but they must also offer unique color options. Browse through any Big Box home improvement store and you will see considerable shelf space dedicated to wood stains and finishes. Wood coatings manufacturers must continue to innovate to rise above the crowd. Kozlowski of Thompsons Water Seal noted that while decks and outdoor living remain very popular, there is a lot competing for the homeowners attention and discretionary funds. We think a key driver in this category is innovation, said Kozlowski. Giving consumers a faster, easier and more effective way to do something moves the needle. Sherwin-Williams reports that their customers rely on them to provide the latest coating technologies that meet industry accepted performance standards such as KCMA, AWI and BIFMA. In addition, end use customer expectations need to be met such as mar resistance and resistance to household chemicals, said Fiorillo. We see the need to become a true partner with our customers by offering innovative products as well as by going above and beyond with value-added services such as training, inventory management,

Sherwin-Williams introduced four formaldehyde-free products in 2013, adding to its existing offering and providing wood finishers with a family of formaldehyde-free finishes to choose from, including lacquers, varnishes and surfacers, primers and sealers. Filling out its line of high performance, formaldehyde-free finishes, Sherwin-Williams has launched these four additional products in its F3 line-up. Sher-Wood F3 Hi-Bild PreCat White Lacquer, Sher-Wood F3 Kemvar Plus Conversion Varnish, SherWood F3 Kemvar Plus Surfacer, and Sher-Wood F3 PreCat Primer/Surfacer. With the addition of these coatings to its existing line of F3 products for formaldehyde free finishing, Sherwin-Williams expands the number of coating options available to help wood finishers eliminate formaldehyde from their finishing process, according to the company.

Tnemec Company
Tnemec offers corrosion protection coatings for a variety of structures and buildings.
Kerry Pianoforte, Editor
Company Prole:
nemec Company, Inc. was founded in 1921 and is a leading manufacturer of high-performance architectural and industrial coatings. The Kansas City, Missouribased company offers innovative coating formulations that protect a wide range of substrates and enhance aesthetics. From water tanks and treatment plants, to manufacturing plants, industrial facilities and specialty architectural buildings, Tnemec coatings can be found protecting virtually all types of structures and buildings. Tnemec Company offers a wide-range of coatings that provide corrosion protection to steel, non-ferrous, and concrete substrates, said Mark Thomas, vice president marketing, Tnemec Company, Inc. These include zinc-rich and mio/ zinc urethane primers, chemical resistant epoxies and waterbased products. A particularly unique product offered by Tnemec Company is a water-based epoxy coating with corrosion-inhibitive properties that provides equivalent corrosion protection as solventbased epoxy coatings. The applications for Tnemecs products vary and include protection from exterior weathering, chemical exposures and corrosive vapors. According to Thomas, the primary concern when choosing corrosion protecting products is the environmental conditions which the substrate and coating will be subjected to and thus the performance level required of the coating and coating system. A full understanding of the environmental conditions is needed in order to provide a sound coating recommendation, said Thomas. Often this includes identifying any factors that could increase the severity of the environment such as a coastal exposure in additional to exterior weathering, or high temperatures in addition to chemical immersion. Tnemec Companys product development efforts have been, and remain, focused on performance. By utilizing
new technology the company has been able to formulate lower VOC products while maintaining ease of application and high performance standards, said Thomas. The high-performance coatings industry is an extremely dynamic one and requires constant forward progress in terms of innovative product development and technical customer service. New technology is continually introduced to the coatings industry that provides better performance while lowering VOCs and limiting environmental impact. Tnemec Company intends to remain at the forefront of this new technology while assisting its customers with sound advice and support. CW

Axalta Coating Systems officially unveiled the 2014 Brilliant Flames paint scheme on the No. 24 Axalta Chevrolet SS race car, driven by four-time NASCAR Sprint Cup Series champion Jeff Gordon, at the NASCAR Hall of Fame in Charlotte, North Carolina. Motorsports announcer, Winston Kelley moderated a panel discussion comprised of the following participants: race car driver Jeff Gordon; VP Axalta Coating Systems and Head of North American Business Nigel Budden; and Hendrick Motorsports chairman and owner Rick Hendrick. Axalta Racing paint scheme artist Sam Bass was also available to take questions from media. The paint scheme, designed by Bass marks the 22nd season of a historic partnership between Axalta, Hendrick Motorsports and Gordon. In addition to displaying the new car design, Axalta presented Gordon with a donation to the Jeff Gordon Childrens Foundation. This is truly a brilliant partnership. We are proud to support Team 24, Jeffs philanthropic endeavors and Hendrick Motorsports. There is tremendous enthusiasm and mutual benefit. We look forward to a successful 2014, said Budden. Axaltas first sponsored race of the 2014 season will showcase the Brilliant Flames paint scheme in Las Vegas on Sunday, March 9, 2014 in the Kobalt Tools 400. CW
