McBain routs
Manton in key
Highland showdown
by marc vieau
cadillac news

MANTON Theres still

a lot of work to do.
Bruce Koopman wanted to
make it perfectly clear his team
is not out of the woods yet.
Still, the Ramblers can see
their prize now after scoring
a big 61-33 win over Manton
in a key Highland Conference boys basketball contest
Friday night.
The win puts McBain (14-2
overall) back atop the league
race at 10-1 while the Rangers (12-4) drop a game back
at 9-2.
We set ourselves up well
to where we can win (the
Highland) outright, Koopman said. but weve still
got work to do.
The Ramblers have league
games against Northern
Michigan Christian, Evart
and Marion left on the slate.
This is the same McBain
team, too, that was handed
a 20-point loss by Pine River
last Friday on its homecoming night where the Bucks
shot the lights out and
limited what the Ramblers
could do.
On Friday, it was the exact
opposite. While McBain
didnt exactly light up the
scoreboard, the Ramblers
defense kept a young and
talented Manton team in
check the whole night.
Koopman wanted a strong
effort right from the start
and thats what he got.
We talked the last two days
in practice about how important the first five minutes of
the game would be, he said.
The first team to get into a
rhythm could take control.
That was certainly McBain.
The Ramblers were up 10-0
before Manton got its first
point of the game on a free
throw and it was 10-3 after
the first quarter.
A layup by McBains Ty
Sterk stretched the lead
to 14-3 with just 1:48 gone
in the second quarter before a putback by Craig
Sterk made it 20-3 midway
through the second.

Mantons Wyatt Baker elevates for a shot against McBains Ty Sterk during Fridays Highland Conference
contest. The Ramblers beat the Rangers 61-33.
coach Ryan Hiller was reliving a nightmare first game
between the two teams this
season where McBain beat
the Rangers 68-38.
McBain deserves all the
credit, Hiller said. They
came out and forced us to
take a lot of difficult shots.
We shot just 10 percent in
the first half and that was due
to their defense. Our offense
just wasnt there tonight and
thats hopefully something we
can work on in the next couple
of weeks to get ready for the
tournament.
McBains Garett Gugle
buried a 3-pointer to stretch

the lead to 27-9 with 19 seconds remaining in the second quarter and it was 27-10
at halftime.
With the strong first half,
Koopman thinks maybe his
team has gotten over the
hump it had thrown in front
of it last week by Pine River.
I think maybe were still
reeling a little bit from last
Friday, he said. With the way
we played Tuesday against
Lake City and the way we
played tonight, maybe weve
righted the ship a little bit.
We just need to stay
within our system and
thats playing defense and

rebounding. I think were a

very good basketball team
when we do those things.
A jumper by Gugle
stretched the lead to 32-12
midway through the third
quarter and it was pretty
much academic from there.
Logan Eling paced
McBain with 13 points while
Cole Powell scored 12. Tyler
Sterk had nine and Craig
Sterk added eight.
We got good play from everyone tonight, Koopman
added.
Jayden Perry paced Manton with 15 points and Ethan
Ancick added seven.

LEROY Mathematically, Pine River is still in contention for the Highland

Conference title with two
weeks left in the regular
season, but the Bucks are
not worried about scoreboard watching.
Instead, Pine River coach
Brian Goodenow is focusing on March and the playoff push.
Part of that preparation
continued Friday as the
Bucks took on Marion and
bested the Eagles, 78-32.
At this point in the season we are really trying
to nitpick the details. We
want to keep working hard
on defense and execute on
offense. Our guys stayed
focused (Friday) and did a
really nice job, Goodenow
said.
Pine River jumped out
to a 21-6 lead after the first
quarter and was up 44-14
at the half. By the start of
the final stanza, the Bucks
were in command, 65-28.
Lucas Harris paced the
Bucks with 19 points and
five rebounds while senior
Mitchell McDonald had
another solid performance
with 12 points, six boards,
four assists and six steals.
Tyler Wing contributed
12 points off the bench
while Mason Powell finished with nine.
Greg Park cleaned the
glass to lead all Pine River
players with seven boards
while Conner Hoaglund
had five.
Marcus Washington
added five assists and four
steals in the win.
Pine River (14-3) travels
to Lake City next Thursday, while Marion is at Evart the same night.

Bakers shot beats Beal City

cadillac news

MANTON They gave themselves a chance.

Karrah Baker did the rest.
Baker buried a shot with one
second remaining to give Manton a
29-27 win over Beal City in a Highland Conference girls basketball
contest Friday night.
The Aggies had tied the game
with about 10 seconds left before
the Rangers set up a play to get the
game-winning shot.
"I told my players that if we find
ourselves up, tied or down for the
last possession, to stay assertive
and look to drive," Manton coach

Jon Paul Katona said.

"Karrah did that and made a big
shot."
Even more impressive for the
Rangers is they haven't really been
in that position this season of a
game going down to the wire.
"We haven't been in close game
situations so for us to come
through the winning end was a big
accomplishment," Katona added.

"We knew if we kept it close at

halftime, we would have a good
chance of winning.
"I give credit to my players for
executing our defensive gameplan.
Our goal was to keep them under
40 and we did that."
The game was tied 6-6 after the
first quarter before Beal City held
a 13-8 lead at halftime.
The Aggies were still up 20-16 going into the fourth quarter before
Manton rallied.
Baker paced the Rangers with 14
points and seven rebounds while
Kirsten Reid added seven points,
five rebounds and three steals.

up the regular season at Marion on
Friday.
Manton won the JV game 29-23.
Hailey Taylor led the Rangers
with six points and six rebounds.
