Review Exam03 Soln

The document describes a problem involving two slender rods released from rest in different positions, with one rod's end bearing on the other rod. It presents the free body diagrams and kinetic diagrams of the two rod system. Step-by-step kinetics equations are written for the translational and rotational motion of each rod to determine the unknown acceleration of one end and the force exerted by the bearing knob.

Problem 16.162
Two slender rods of length l and mass m, are released from
rest in the positions shown. Knowing that a small knob at end
B of rod AB bears on rod CD, determine immediately after
release
a) the acceleration of end C of the rod CD
b) the force exerted on the knob

Step 1 : Identify System: Both Rods

Step 2 : Identify Form of Equations Required: need acceleration and force, therefore use Rate Form
Step 3 : Draw system diagrams according to choice of equation form and identify unknowns : FBD and KD

Rod AB

FBD + KD
x unk eqs
Ay maG AB y
A B A B
Ax maG AB x
By I G AB α AB
WAB

Rod BC

FBD KD x
Dy maGCD y

C D Dx C maGCD x D
I GCD α CD
WCD

Step 4 : Kinetics

Rod AB
COLM(RF) in x-dir Ax = maG AB x (1)

COLM(RF) in y-dir Ay + B y − W AB = maG AB y (2)

l l
COAM(RF) about point G − Ay + B y = I G AB α AB (3)

Rod CD
COLM(RF) in x-dir D x = maGCD x (4)

COLM(RF) in y-dir D y − B y − WCD = maGCD y (5)
