Mrs. Smiths Scoop

Welcome to 2013! I hope you are looking forward to the New Year. Thank you PTA Members and Parent Volunteers for the time and energy you spent during the month of December working in classrooms, serving in the Honey Hive, and helping with holiday festivities, especially the Faculty and Staff Dessert Party. Your volunteer hours and commitment are commendable. Our whole school community makes up a fabulous team! In the words of our school superintendent Trey Folse - The tragedy at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut, has made us all aware that we must constantly focus on the safety of our students. As a district and as your principal, we are resolved to make certain our campuses and buildings are as safe and secure as possible. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact me. The Honey Island Hive will be buzzin during the months of January and February. We will review our FISH Philosophy in full force during the week of January 14. Students will be DIBELs-assessed this month. We will observe Martin Luther King, Jr. Day in our learning and with a holiday on Monday, January 21. Families are invited to attend our Math, Science & Technology Night on Thursday, January 24. February will bring Valentines Exchange on February 8. We will be out of school for Mardi Gras Holidays the week of February 11. Our library will hold a Book Fair February 21-27. Our 2nd Annual Arts Festival Groovy About Art is Saturday, March 16, 2013 from 10am-1pm. It is a come & go event. The purpose of the Festival is to showcase the talent of the Honey Island students and to provide a tasteful and enjoyable experience for the Honey Island community. The Festival will have: Performing Arts & Interactive Arts Hallway Art Galleries All students will have a piece of artwork displayed. Classroom Project Raffle-Each class will create an Art Project to be on display and raffled off during the festival. A contest will be held to choose the annual artwork for the t-shirt and signage. The contest will run from January 28-31. T-shirts will be offered prior to the event for a fee. Students will be able to wear these shirts on Fridays. Volunteers are needed to make this event a success. There will be a planning meeting on Tuesday, January 29 at 4pm in the library. Join us to see how you can help! Be on the lookout for more information and plan to sign up as a volunteer! Please come by the school to volunteer or eat lunch with your child. Our parents make Honey Island a place where Every Day, Every Child Succeeds! Mrs. Smith

Assistant Principal Spotlight

Welcome to 2013 and the second half of our school year! I hope each Honey Island family had a great holiday break! Teachers and students alike are ready to get back in the swing of learning! We are all looking forward to a successful winter and spring this semester! In early January, we will celebrate FISH Week, where students will review our school-wide expectations, our CHAMPS rules, and our monthly behavior goals. You can help at home by having conversations with your children about character traits that will help them to grow into successful adults. Our expectations will guide students to making successful choices, so it will be helpful to talk about them with your children as well as model the expectations for them. These expectations include being there, making someones day, choosing your attitude, and having fun! Speaking of being there for others, I received a heartfelt letter from the New York family whom we sent donated goods in December. Many of the families there are still suffering from the effects of Hurricane Sandy, and the students gifts of blankets, gloves, and other items were much HIE PTA Board Members appreciated. The recipients have promised to pay 2012-2013 it forward and help others less fortunate than them! What a way to bring the true meaning of President Christy Murphy Vice President Angie Morris our expectations to life! Thanks to all the students VP Membership Judi Buckner and their families who donated items! Secretary Jennifer Bouzigard Later in January, Honey Island will have its annual Math, Science, and Technology Night. This special night will be held on Thursday, January 24th from 6:30 to 8:00. Students and their parents will have the opportunity to participate in a variety of hands-on activities. It is also a time to showcase the many new technologies we have here at Honey Island to enhance your childrens learning! Please save the date, and we hope to see many of you there! Mrs. Troyer

News From Our Superintendent

The St. Tammany Parish Public School System recently received a letter grade of A in the latest District Performance Scores released by the Louisiana Department of Education. This is a great accomplishment by any school district and especially one as large as ours with 55 schools and almost 38,000 students. I would like to thank our parents and caregivers for their assistance in this achievement. We know that parental involvement in our schools has a direct impact on education. Our St. Tammany community values public education, and through the PTA our parents are full partners in the education of their children. Each and every one of our students, their families, teachers and school employees should be congratulated for this score. With the leadership of our School Board, School Administrators and Central Office staff, we were able to see great gains this year. I am very proud of the efforts within our School System. We still have work to do, and we are always looking at ways to improve each of our schools. We recently have added new avenues of communication for our School System. We invite you to like us on Facebook at www.facebook.com/stppschools, follow us on Twitter at www.twitter.com/ stppschools, view School System videos on YouTube at http://www.youtube.com/user/ channel13sttammany and browse our internet photo pages for each school by clicking the School Photos Online link on the District homepage.
