Leyte Gov. Petilla opposes plan to abolish pork barrel

TACLOBAN CITY Leyte Governor Leopoldo Dominico Petilla said that he is not in favor to scrap the pork barrel of the senators and congressmen.
Petilla, who is the vice president for the Visayas of the Governors League of the Philippines, said that instead of calling for the abolition of the pork barrel, Congress should do something to protect its alleged misuse. I am not for it (scrapping the pork barrel). The pork barrel of our congressmen, in particular, benefits our people, especially those living in far-flung areas, Petilla said. They should instead come up with a measure to protect it from being misuse, he added. The Leyte governor, however, admitted that there could be some congressmen who have misused their pork barrel, officially known as the Priority Development Assistance Fund. CATARMAN, Northern Samar Member-consumers of the Northern Samar Electric Cooperative (Norsamelco) here are fearful that the recent takeover of the National Electrification (NEA) on their electric cooperative is a sign that the province may follow the plight of Albay province that was recently cut of its power supply due to unpaid debts from its suppliers. Governor Jun Ong admitted that he shared the same fear after he learned of Norsamelcos sinking finances. Hasta ako nahadok liwat actually. Public advised to take precautionary measures against meningococcemia

TACLOBAN CITY The city government of Tacloban through its City Health Office assured residents of the city that there is no meningococcemia scare in the city and there is no need to panic, despite the reported death of an 18 year-old student of the Eastern Visayas Estate University on Monday, August 5. Dr. Jaime Opinion, city health officer, said that as far as their office is concerned, they had never confirmed that the cause of death of the student was meningococcemia as it was Scene of the Crime Operatives of the Philippine National Police Eastern Visayas through post-mortem examination that was requested by the family of the victim. The result of the SOCO autopsy report was that the victim died due to meningococcemia infection, which they never contradicted, said Dr. Opinion. But on August 5 she was declared dead on arrival at the EVRMC after her family brought her to the hospital. Opinion added that as part of the precautionary measure on this case, their office had already provided prophylactic antibiotic to the family of the victim and to her six classmates who had close contact with her. The six students were sent to the EVRMC for observation, said Dr. Opinion. The EVSU president, Dominador Aguirre, Jr., ordered for the suspension of classes as part of their prevention and precautionary measure but classes will reportedly resume on Monday, August 12. Opinion added that they are still conducting investigation how the victim acquired the bacteria and added that they also instructed school officials of the university to avoid unnecessary gathering or occasion. He also advised the officials of the school and the residents of Tacloban to immediately ask for medical consultation and assistance once they feel symptoms of meningococcemia infection such as fatigue fever, headache, and body aches, similar to those experienced by people with influenza. In the health advisory released by the City Health Board, they advised residents of the city to observe the following precautionary measures to avoid acquiring meningococcemia infection. These include proper hand washing; cover of mouth when sneezing or coughing; eat balanced diet; seek early consultation when you have fever, headache and other symptoms; limit alcohol intake, and avoid smoking and overcrowded places. Regional health authorities reported that as of August 8, 2013, there are only 12 cases of meningococcemia in Eastern Visayas, but only one death is recorded in Tacloban City. (ROEL T

It was in the later part of 1997 that FIDA noted the presence of abaca mosaic infestation in Ormoc City in Leyte and in Silvino Lobos in Northern Samar. However, infestation in these areas was already contained. During the early part of 1999, an infestation of abaca bunchy-top was noted in Mahaplag and Sogod, Southern Leyte and the area then registered five to 70 percent disease infection. From being the countrys top producer in the 1990s, Southern Leyte slid to the 10thplace in 2010 due to widespread infestation.

If getting near is inevitable, such as among family members or those in infirmaries where such patients are confined, it would be best to take the necessary precautionary measures. Hand-washing is the best protective step, particularly before eating and if possible avoid wiping the face, especially the nose and mouth, or any portal of entry. Health authorities in countless news reports and advisories have talked intensively and comprehensively the symptoms, which a patient would though not visible to other people, which are high fever, headache, stiff neck, drowsiness, dizziness, convulsions, vomiting, unstable vital signs, coughing, and rashes which are purple and, unlike other rashes, do not turn white when pressure is applied. DOH officials also enumerated measures to avoid getting the disease, that include frequent washing of hands with soap and water; avoiding close contact with meningococcemia patients; increased resistance by maintaining a healthy bled waters with all their dislikes, which they never expressed to one another. This is the most common question people ask these days: How safe are we? Or in a bit debatable term: How safe is safe? From insurances for life, education and health to workplace environment to social securities to capital investments to freedom from harm by external aggressors or microbial invaders, people in any of these concerns ask this one thing: How safe am I? We ponder nowadays how we can evade the assailants advances in to our own domain either our life and limbs and our property outside and inside our abode or comfort zone or our relationship. Burglars rush into supposedly safe abode or secured edifices without respect of time and even in the midst of thick crowd. Hale and hearty relationships strangely turn sour in a snap and lovers suddenly become strangers for unarticulated reasons. One who was in pink of health few weeks ago is suddenly in sickbed or worse in state of comatose for yet

It is a pity it is the sad reality in our government bureaucracy.

The esteem in which the Church held Lawrence is seen in the fact that todays celebration ranks as a feast. He is one of those whose martyrdom made a lasting impression on the early church. In the days before photography, the most powerful way to preserve the presence and the memory of loved ones was to recall their stories. In the community of the Church thi8s recollection is done in written and spoken words, especially in liturgical prayers. Accordingly, the name of Lawrence was a Roman deacon under Pope Sixtus II. Four days after this Pope was put to death, Lawrence and four clerics suffered martyrdom during the persecution of Emperor Valerian. On the spot where Lawrence was buried, a church was built later, the Basilica of Lawrence. He is often depicted holding a purse, since alms-giving was his great responsibility as a deacon, and he was renowned for his kindness and generosity to people. His life of service and martyrdom teaches us that only by service comes greatness. The people whom the world remembers with love are those who served others. Things are a lot more difcult for us because we do not know how to communicate. I have nally learned the valuable and fundamental lesson of communication. This lesson is subject code 101, yet it has got to be one of the most difcult to carry out. Our most simple tasks at home, in work, in social groups, have become complex because we just clam up. My brother Pat has complained more than once of his untold desire for a girl. His covert affection for this girl, whose name remained undisclosed, has caused him a would-be blooming relationship. Healing Masses of Fr. Fernando Suarez in Leyte and Samar 2013

The great healer, Fr. Fernando Suarez, will have Healing Masses on August 12, 2013 in Basey, Samar upon the invitation of Sis. Nydia Yap, a well known Benefactor, in coordination with Fr. Pines Tabones and Fr. Gil Cabujat of St. Michael Church and Leling Yu, retired Principal of Basey Elementary School, and in cooperation of the Parishs Religious Organizations and their different Barangays. Celebrating the Mass with Fr. Suarez on August 12 in Basey, Samar is none other than the Bishop of Calbayog, Isabelo Abarquez. And on August 13, 2013, Fr. Suarezs Healing Mass all be in Maasin, Leyte at 10AM at Our Lady of Assumption upon the invitation of Bishop Precioso Cantillas in coordination with Fr. Garnet. Fr. Suarez, a tennis acionado will attend also the Maasin Tennis Tournament that day. And on August 15, upon the invitation of former Justice Eddie Nachura, the Hermano Mayor of Catbalogan, Citys Fiesta, his Healing Mass will be in St. Bartholomew Parish at 9 AM. This is in coordination with Fr. Mundoy de Guzman, Fr. Ferdie Figueroa, Fr. Robert Talon, Fr. Cesar Aculan and Chitoy Rosales, 4th stage liver cancer patient healed by Fr. Suarez. The next day, August 16, 2013, Fr. Suarezs Healing Mass will be in Tacloban City in Sacred Heart of Jesus Parish at 9AM in coordination with Eugene Tan, President of Pintados Kasadyaan Organization in cooperation with Fr.
