    Tellabs 1000 Multi-Service Access (MSA) Series Tellabs Gigabit Ethernet Transceiver (GbE221)

    Overview
    Gigabit Ethernet (GigE) represents a high-bandwidth, cost-effective network interface for packet-based networks. The Tellabs Gigabit Ethernet Transceiver (GbE221) is a single-slot, two-port module used in the Tellabs 1000 MSA series to support High-Speed Internet (HSI) services, Voice over IP (VoIP), and IP Television (IPTV). The GbE221 supports two Gigabit Ethernet ports equipped with 1000-Base-SX or 1000-Base-LX Small Form-factor Pluggable (SFP) optics. The GbE221 transceiver facilitates operator migration from circuitswitched to packet-switched voice. The Ethernet interface combined with Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) support in the Tellabs 1000 MSA series results in a cost-effective Voice-over-Internet Protocol (VoIP) solution. Operators can combine the use of GR-303 or TR-008 circuit-switched voice interfaces with SIP in the same Tellabs 1000 MSA series for mixed circuit-switched and VoIP deployments or to facilitate a complete migration to VoIP. With SIP voice, high speed internet traffic and voice use the same GbE221 module. The GbE221 provides segmentation and prioritization of different traffic types and classes of service (e.g. voice vs. high speed Internet) with Weighted Round Robin (WRR) scheduling and Weighted Random Early Detection (WRED) congestion control. In order to facilitate migration to Internet Protocol Television (IPTV), the Gigabit Ethernet module also contains hardware support for Internet Group Management Protocol (IGMP). With IGMP proxy support, the Tellabs 1000 MSA series determines which video streams (in terms of multicast IP addresses) to deliver to which subscribers. To maximize network efficiency, the GbE221 card supports link aggregation. Link aggregation not only provides a 2 Gbps pipe when needed but also provides increased resiliency if the second port experiences a failure. In addition, The GbE221 supports up to 2,048 AECs (ATM to Ethernet Connections) and up to 2,048 VLANs (virtual LANs) per Ethernet port. Up to 4,096 AECs and VLANs are support per Tellabs 1000 MSA series.
