contractor, with over 30 years experience and more
than 1,200 professional staff on 5 continents.

We believe that the engineering and management of pipelines and subsea

systems is an important and interesting task, requiring skill, experience and
intense application. We recognise this in the way we work:
We find gifted people to join our company, make them feel at home and
help them develop
We achieve a balance between using fixed internal processes and expecting
individuals to take accountability for what they do
We actively share our knowledge and experience across all our operations
We devise new and better ways of doing things. We believe that managerial
and technical innovation is possible on most projects. We spend our own
money on technology development
We always provide independent and impartial answers and never bias solutions
to favour a supplier or installer
We dont engineer things for the sake of engineering. Nor do we get lost in
the process of engineering. We always undertake our work with a view to the
impact it will have on our customers activities.

SUBSEA
PRODUCTION
SYSTEMS

J P Kenny has participated in half the worlds

subsea developments installed in the North
Sea, the Gulf of Mexico and Asia.
Our Expertise
J P Kenny has one of the longest track records of any subsea services company.
Our subsea team consists of more than 300 specialists covering all technical
and project management disciplines. We deliver subsea projects in all
geographical regions, and have participated in approximately half of the subsea

participated in, cost, schedule, and availability (uptime) information is readily
available.
Materials engineering: Material selection for subsea systems is paramount to
ensure uninterrupted operability and we have more than 35 materials specialists.
Controls systems and umbilical support: J P Kenny has developed a particular
skill set in these areas, with expertise that includes; specification of control
system components, technical analysis of control systems and management of
Total Vendor Maintenance Contracts.
Systems integration: J P Kenny recruits staff with knowledge of the broader
systems issues.

A great subsea history

J P Kenny started life in 1978 in the UK when subsea
was little more than an emerging technology. Since
then we have been involved with the development of
subsea hardware and systems as they have become
proven and established in depths of up to 3000m.
In the 1980s Colin McKinnon launched his subsea
career by working on the Welland, 3 well subsea
tieback in 34m of water. In 2004, now Technical
Director of our London office, he began working on
BPs huge Block 31 programme in 2000m.

Gunnison Field Development

Greater Gorgon
Australia

The Rhum field is a satellite to the Bruce platform

and is operated by BP and consists of three wells
tied back to a subsea manifold through 8" pipe-inpipe insulated infield flowlines. The manifold is
connected to the Bruce platform via a 45km pipe-inpipe insulated system. J P Kenny engineered all
facilities and was part of the joint management team
responsible for the whole development.
The subsea system represented a major challenge
because of the well fluid chemistry and extremely
high wellhead temperatures and pressures. A pipein-pipe system was required to maintain the fluids
above the hydrate formation temperature.
J P Kenny initiated and managed extensive testing to
confirm reeling feasibility of the pipe-in-pipe system,
a measure which saved the project an estimated
10 million when reeling is compared to conventional
installation methods.

J P Kenny has acted as the engineering partner for

Kerr McGees (now Anadarko) subsea developments
in the Gulf of Mexico. We have been part of a multiproject contractor alliance thats achieved an audited
track record of delivering deepwater tie-backs on
schedule and well below the median benchmark
cost. So far more than 30 subsea wells have been
completed and we continue to play a key role in
appraising and delivering projects in depths to
2500m.
The Gunnison project is a typical example of one of
the developments. For this field we completed flow
assurance analysis, flowline and riser design, and
control system and subsea hardware specifications.
J P Kenny staff followed the manufacturing and
testing and participated in offshore operations.

Greater Gorgon consists of 12 gas fields containing

in excess of 40 tcf of recoverable natural gas. The
field development concept is to supply untreated
gas from the subsea facilities via two 30", 140km
pipelines to an LNG plant situated on Barrow Island,
a class A nature reserve just off NW Australia.
Greater Gorgon presents a series of technical
challenges that have rarely been encountered in a
single project. The field contains around 15% CO2,
high pressure and temperature, factors which
complicate material selection. The large diameter
valves at the rated class 2500 are new technology
and so qualification programmes are needed. The
structures to support the manifold equipment are
large and will require specialist installation equipment. With seabed angles of up to 70%, and water
depths of up to 1350m, the large diameter pipelines
themselves are at the limit of installation capability.
J P Kenny have assembled an engineering team
from around the globe to meet these challenges.
Situated together with the Chevron and Exxon team,
they are jointly solving the technical and delivery
issues to meet the target project schedule.

A history of developing from the bottom up

J P Kenny has always recruited engineers fresh from
college, and each year approximately 50 start work
with us in our offices around the world.
Here are some of our recent Aberdeen graduates
who have a diverse range of backgrounds. All are
getting experience of different projects and all will
have the opportunity to work in other J P Kenny
offices to expand their experience and skills.

independent design verification service.
Audit and Expert Witness services: Potential investors, loss adjusters, banks
and lawyers have commissioned J P Kennys experts for: audits of ongoing
projects, due diligence studies, and technical advice on contractual claims.
Shore Crossings: J P Kenny staff have in-depth experience of conventional
shore crossings as well as unique exposure to approaches involving tunnels,
drilling methods etc.

Adding value through innovation

At J P Kenny we judge our success based on the
value we add to our customers businesses. In the
past 10 years we have achieved considerable cost
reductions in a number of pipeline systems by
devising new approaches to stability, buckling, and
other issues. Haicheng Rong joined the London
office of J P Kenny after working in Asia. She has
played a key role in developing innovative solutions
to installation challenges in deepwater projects in
India and developments in the Arctic.

Pipeline from Algeria to Italy via Sardinia

Mediterranean

As part of the expansion of gas production facilities

by Woodside, a new 42" trunkline was installed
between the 30" Goodwyn A Interfield Line and the
LNG Facilities onshore Western Australia. J P Kenny
was responsible for all engineering of the new
system, including procurement assistance and
offshore installation supervision.
The scope of work included offshore tie-ins, risers,
subsea valve stations, controls, pipeline mechanical
design, stability, shore approaches and all associated
activities. The North West Shelf Area is prone to
tropical cyclones and there is a history of seabed
instability, which made pipeline stabilisation a major
technical and commercial issue. J P Kenny engineered
an innovative patented gravity anchor system that
resulted in savings of more than $20 million when
compared to conventional rock dumping.

A culture of knowledge sharing

One of the ways we share expertise around the
Group is to transfer our people. Elizabeth Lakey joined
J P Kenny in Houston in 1992 where she worked on
several deepwater projects. She transferred to Perth,
Western Australia in 2003 where Elizabeth is now a
member of the management team and is responsible
for a number of subsea and pipeline projects.

BP Trinidad and Tobago developed a program for

the expansion of its offshore fields and gas
transportation system to supply new LNG trains.
The gas transportation system expansion included
70km of 48" offshore pipeline from the Cassia B hub
platform to landfall on the east coast of Trinidad. The
engineering and management support for this line
was provided by J P Kenny.
Constructability was a major issue due to the high
design D/t ratio and the 5" concrete coating. As
a consequence early contact was made with
contractors to determine installation feasibility. The
high D/t ratio fell outside of code constraints, which
led to a peer review presentation and the need to
perform 3D FE analyses. A detailed schedule and
cost estimate was also developed. The project cost
estimate was the subject of a detailed risk analysis
to establish the project budget for sanction at the
Execute Stage.

This pipeline will form a strategic link between the

huge gas reserves in Algeria and the centre of
gas demand in northern Italy and Europe, without
passing through a third party territory. The pipeline
extends over a distance of nearly 1000km and
reaches a maximum water depth of nearly 3km.
The scope of work included the determination of
an optimum pipeline configuration for the pipeline
system, assessment of the feasibility of the pipeline
system, particularly in relation to the deepwater
section between Algeria and Sardinia, initiating the
Detailed Marine Survey, and establishing a project
schedule and cost estimate.
J P Kenny was faced with numerous challenges on this
project that were overcome through the application of
innovative design methods. One particular challenge
was the maximum water depth which is significantly
in excess of that encountered by previous trunklines,
and will in fact become the deepest trunkline in
the world when constructed. Route optimisation
through the steep continental shelf slopes, including
consideration of geohazard risk, formed a significant
and demanding element of this work.

08

ONSHORE
PIPELINES
AND
DISTRIBUTION
SYSTEMS

Our onshore team have completed project

scopes ranging from upstream in-field systems
to low pressure downstream distribution
networks.
Our Expertise
The J P Kenny onshore pipeline group consists of 200 specialists situated in
London, Asia and the Middle East. The team operates in the upstream,
transportation and distribution sectors.
A full range of services is offered throughout a projects life cycle, from the
earliest conceptual studies to decommissioning and abandonment.
Technical engineering excellence in onshore pipelines and their associated
above ground installations (AGIs) are augmented by an extensive experience in
strategic analysis, project planning and techno-economic evaluation, together
with strong project management and contracting skills.

Key Capabilities
The J P Kenny onshore pipeline team has developed proprietary processes,
technologies and capabilities including:
Remote sensing: Satellite imagery, aerial survey, other remote sensed data
and mapping, georectified and collated within a GIS (Geographical Information
System) model, define the terrain and route geomorphology, facilitating accurate
desk-top route selection, whilst delivering substantial cost and time saving
benefits.
Pipeline size optimisation: This is delivered using a J P Kenny tool, which
models the trade off between the OPEX aspects of hydraulic efficiency and
the CAPEX impact of diameter and wall thickness.
Gas distribution systems optimisation: Our team have conducted market
research, completed network analysis and analysed the structure of operating
organisations as part of detailed assessments of the optimum arrangement of
distribution systems.
Cost estimating: Our in-house programme allows the team to generate accurate,
dependable cost estimates swiftly and at a very early stage in a project.
Audit and Expert Witness services: Potential investors, owners and insurance
companies commission J P Kennys experts for audits of ongoing projects, and
assessments of pipeline infrastructure.

Independent and Impartial

In many of the projects we are involved in there
are choices to be made about the best equipment
design or construction technique. And often the
choice has to be made before fixed commercial
data is available.
Unlike many other engineering companies, J P Kenny
has no relationships or allegiances with suppliers.
Our people are only interested in choosing the best
solution for our customers.

Melut Basin Oil Pipeline

QASR Gas Development

Egypt

J P Kennys involvement in the project initially

focussed on developing the pipeline routing and
preliminary hydraulics to enable cost estimates to
be produced.

For the conceptual and basic engineering phases

of this 1400km pipeline system, transporting waxy
crude from the Melut Basin to Port Sudan on the
Red Sea, the team used J P Kennys line sizing tool
to model the trade off between CAPEX and OPEX.
This enabled the optimum line size to be quickly and
efficiently established.

A key facet of this project was the heat management

system that was required in order to transport the
heavy, waxy crude. The final solution adopted was
to use a Skin Effect Heat Management System. With
this system, a heat tube is welded along the side of
the pipeline, thus maintaining the correct temperature
of the oil via heat transfer to the pipe wall. The
pipeline is a world first and at nearly 600km, will be
the longest insulated pipeline in the world.

Readily available remote sensed data, merged in

a desk-top GIS model, enabled the routing to be
quickly developed. Satellite imagery provided detail
of the terrain, whilst radar images gave an indication
of the ground conditions, enabling trenching costs to
be factored into corridor selection.

J P Kenny personnel from the London and India

offices, along with their sister company MSi Kenny,
undertook the work, highlighting the successful
coordination and the ability to integrate and
maximise knowledge between our offices.

A small team then drove the selected route. Route

adjustments were made in the field directly into the
GIS model, aided by a GPS system. The whole
routing exercise took only 8 weeks and cost much
less than the traditional approach.

Leveraging technology to create

better solutions
The selection of the best routes and
layouts of pipelines and subsea
systems is now achieved with GIS
technology and software that enables
3D visualisations of alternatives to
be quickly compared.
Yousef Achercouk, who has worked
at J P Kenny for more than 15 years,
leads the application of GIS solutions
across a range of projects.

The QASR Gas Development Project covers

provisions of all facilities and pipelines required to
develop the QASR Gas/Condensate Field and link
it to two existing treatment plants 100km away.
J P Kennys scope of work ran from initial Project
Management through to construction support.
The whole complete development was worked
against a fast track schedule. Following initial Field
Development evaluation, a free standing early gas
scheme complete with separators and inlet heating at
the Obayied Plant was specified, procured, installed
and commissioned within an 8 month period.
J P Kenny also reviewed options for further
developments to the Apache infrastructure as new
discoveries of gas were made in the Western Desert.
Additional export pipelines and facilities were
proposed to evacuate the increased quantities of gas.

The Clair Field is located 75km West of the Shetland

Islands in water depths of about 140m. The pipeline
system consists of 22" oil export pipeline to Sullom
Voe and a 6" gas export pipeline connecting to a tee
in the 20" West of Shetlands gas export line.
J P Kenny undertook the project management of the
pipeline systems, providing a full management team
including the customers project manager. The value
of the works managed by J P Kenny on behalf of BP
was approximately 65 million.
Key project success factors were: the achievement
of best in class HSE performance; delivery of all
work-scopes to the agreed standards; timely
co-ordination and execution of all project related
activities; preparation and maintenance of the
budget for the pipeline, and the implementation of
a performance management and risk management
system for the pipeline and indeed other scopes.

A team with extensive experience

Our staff have worked on the most challenging jobs
in the industry. Peter Metcalf has more than 30 years
of major project experience, much of it gained in
deepwater projects and harsh environments. More
recently he has been leading J P Kennys activities
on BPs $15 billion deepwater programme offshore
Angola. This project aims for cost and schedule
efficiencies by achieving consistency, re-use and
compatibility across a series of field developments.

To meet anticipated gas demand in Ireland by winter

2002, Bord Gais Eireann (BGE) required a second
30" pipeline to supply gas to Ireland from the UK.
With a Bord Gais team of only a few people,
J P Kenny was responsible for all aspects of project
management from design through to commissioning.
The J P Kenny team successfully managed the
approvals and permitting process with the UK,
Irish and Isle of Man governments. In total, the
requirements of 11 separate bodies were met and
226 permit conditions were dealt with.
Despite the complication of an additional spur line
added late in the project, the complete system was
delivered on time and under the project budget of
180 million.

The Lorien Field is located in the Gulf of Mexico in

approximately 2200 feet water depth and tied back
to a fixed platform in 1350 feet of water, around 12
miles away.
J P Kenny prepared the ITT packages, performed
the bid analysis and provided onsite management
and engineering support during all stages of
operation.
The work on this development was performed to
a very aggressive schedule that was contrary to
currently known hardware deliveries. Nonetheless,
J P Kenny managed to deliver a successful project
on time, fulfilling both the needs of the client and the
host, with these two entities operating with differing
cultures, behaviours and standard operating
procedures.
