Forms of chlorine
A distinction is made between free chlorine and bonded chlorine.
Free chlorine
Free chlorine refers to the sum of elementary chlorine (Cl2), hypochlorous acid (HOCl)
and hypochlorite ions (OCl).
These forms of chlorine are capable of killing bacteria, deactivating viruses and
oxidising organic substances within a short period of time.
Bonded chlorine
Bonded chlorine refers to the forms of chlorine in water and consist of chemical
compounds made up of chlorine and ammoniac (NH3) or ammonium (NH4+).
Total chlorine
The sum of free and bonded chlorine is referred to as total chlorine.
Molecular chlorine (Cl2) has pH values of < 4. Hypochlorous acid (HOCl) and
hypochlorite (OCl) remain within the range of pH 4 11 as components of free
chlorine. As hypochlorous acid dissociates as the pH value rises to form hypochlorite
ions (OCl) and hydrogen ions (H+), the amounts of the individual components in free
chlorine change with the pH value (see Fig. 6.5). For example, if the amount of
hypochlorous acid is 97% at pH 6, it drops to about 3% at pH 9.
Fig. 6.5:
The CCS 140 or CCS 141 chlorine sensors only measure the amount of hypochlorous
acid selectively in the amperometric measurement. This has a highly disinfecting effect
in an aqueous solution. On the other hand, the disinfection effect of hypochlorite is
extremely low. Accordingly, it is not practical to use chlorine as a disinfection agent at
high pH values. Since hypochlorite ions cannot wander through the sensor membrane,
the sensors cannot sense this amount.
Endress+Hauser
33
6 Instrument configuration
If you select pH compensation in fields B2 or B3, the sum of hypochlorous acid and
hypochlorite corresponding to the DPD measurement is calculated from the chlorine
sensor measuring signal which corresponds to hypochlorous acid (HOCl) by including
the pH value in the region of pH 4 9. The curve as depicted in Fig. 6.5 is therefore
stored in the transmitter.
Note!
When free chlorine is measured with the pH compensation function on, always perform
calibration in the pH-compensated operating mode.
When you use pH compensation, the chlorine measured value displayed and applied
to the instrument output corresponds to the DPD measured value even if the pH values
fluctuate. If you do not use pH compensation, the chlorine measured value only
corresponds to the DPD measurement if the pH value remains unchanged compared
with the calibration. Without pH compensation the chlorine measuring system must be
recalibrated when the pH value changes.
pH compensation can take place both automatically using the connected pH electrode
(EP version) or manually (ES version) by entering the current pH value in field B3.
Measuring chlorine dioxide is not pH-dependent, therefore, it requires no pH
compensation.
Accuracy of pH compensation
The accuracy of the pH compensated chlorine measured value derives from the sum of
several single measured deviations (chlorine, pH, Temperature, DPD measurement
etc.).
High amounts of hypochlorous acid (HOCl) during chlorine calibration have positive
effects on the accuracy whereas low amounts of hypochlorous acid have negative
effects.
Inaccuracy of the pH compensated chlorine value increases the bigger the pH
difference between operation and calibration get or the more inaccurate the single
measured values are.

Current outputs
The CURRENT OUTPUT function group is used to configure the individual outputs. You
can either select a linear (O3(1)) or, on the ES and EP versions, you can define a current
output characteristic yourself (O3(3). A current output value can also be simulated
(O3(2)) to check current outputs. The controller set value in field R 247 / R 257 can be
output via current output 2, if available.
Example for user-defined current output table
Fig. 6.9:
The distance signal per mA between two table value pairs must exceed:

6.5.2 Check
The function group CHECK is only accessible for instruments equipped with the Plus
packet.
This function group is used to select and configure the monitoring functions.
Note!
All the monitoring functions are off in the factory setting.
The Sensor Check System adapts to the current application conditions by adding and
setting suitable functions, either with or without controller switch-off when an alarm is
signalled.
Alarm threshold monitoring
When you perform a chlorine or chlorine dioxide measurement without chemical
entrainment control, sensor errors result in an incorrect reading but this has no impact
on the process medium (example: monitoring measurement in waterworks). Sensor
errors normally cause high or low readings that are implausible. This is detected and
signalled by user-definable alarm thresholds.
Controller check
When you perform chlorine or chlorine dioxide measurements with simultaneous
chemical entrainment control, sensor errors do not result in incorrect measured values
but have direct impacts on the state of the process medium.
In particular in the case of controlled water disinfection, there is a process-related that
chemical dosing is not switched on due to a permanently high measured value. This
causes considerable danger to process stability, or even a serious health hazard for
humans. On the other hand a measured value that is permanently too low due to the
resultant interruption in chemical dosing results is higher running costs and a risk of
corrosion.
These cases are detected and signalled due to user-definable monitoring times for
maximum permitted controller switch-on and switch-off times.
Sensor alternation check
Impacts of the process medium on the sensor can also result in incorrect measured
values. For example, a strong deposit on the sensor membrane can lead to a highly
sluggish or even a constant measuring signal that no longer changes. This is detected
and signalled by continuously monitoring the signal.

Only one function can be assigned to each relay. If a relay function is already switched
on (R211 to R281), then after selection of another function by confirmation with ENTER
(R2(1) to R2(8)) the former is automatically switched off.
Note!
Pressing the REL key allows you to display the corresponding setpoint to every relay

As for the time function, ChemoClean can also start a cleaning action. By comparison,
the function scope is extended by an option for defining cleaning and rinsing intervals.
You can therefore clean at irregular intervals at various repetition cycles and set
separate cleaning times and rinsing times.
Note!
Use relays 3 (water) and 4 (cleaner) for the ChemoClean function.
If the cleaning operation is aborted prematurely, a post-rinse time always runs.

Diagnosis
Diagnosis refers to the identification of instrument malfunctions and defects.
Corrective maintenance
replacing a part diagnosed to be defective
testing instrument and measuring point for proper functioning and thus
restoring full functionality.
72
Diagnosis using the table below is performed depending on the level of difficulty and
the measuring instruments available by:
Operator's qualified personnel
Operator's qualified electrical personnel
Company responsible for system installation / operation
E+H Service.
Select the necessary spare parts using the tables in chapter 8.2.4 and 8.3.4.
Warning!
De-energise the instrument before you open it. Work with live lines may only be
performed by trained electricians.
Switch contacts may be powered by separate circuits. Also de-energise these circuits
before you work on the terminals.
Caution: ESD!
Electronic components are sensitive to electrostatic discharge. Take personal
precautions such as discharge yourself by touching a PE or wear a permanent
earthing device such as a wriststrap.
For your own safety, always use original spare parts. This ensures the correct function,
precision and reliability after corrective maintenance.

1.1
Designated use
Oxidizing agents such as chlorine or anorganic chlorine compounds are used for disinfection of
water. Their dosing must be carefully controlled to suit the application. Too low a concentration
makes the degree of disinfection questionable. Too high a concentration increases the costs and
can result in corrosion effects, impairment of taste or skin irritation.
The sensor has been specially designed for this purpose. It is used for continuous measurement
of free chlorine in water.
When used in connection with a measurement and control system, it permits the optimum
disinfection status to be maintained.
Any other use than the one described here compromises the safety of persons and the entire
measuring system and is, therefore, not permitted.
The manufacturer is not liable for damage caused by improper or non-designated use.

CCS140 or CCS141 chlorine sensors selectively measure the amount of hypochlorous acid in
amperometric measurement. They do not measure the amount of hypochlorite ions because
these ions do not permeate through the sensor membrane.
pH compensation of chlorine sensor signal for free chlorine
To calibrate and inspect the chlorine measuring system, a colorimetric reference measurement
must be carried out using the DPD method. Free chlorine reacts with
diethyl-p-phenylenediamine and forms a red dye. The intensity of the red pigmentation
increases proportionally to the chlorine content. In the DPD method the measuring water is
constantly buffered to a pH value of about 6.3. Therefore, the pH value of the measuring water
is not included in the DPD measurement. Due to the buffer function in the DPD method, all
components of free chlorine are detected and thus the total free chlorine is measured.
If you select pH compensation in the transmitter, the sum of hypochlorous acid and hypochlorite
corresponding to the DPD measurement is calculated from the hypochlorous acid measured by
the sensor and the pH value in the region of pH 4 to 9. For this calculation, the curve shown in
Fig. 7 is stored in the transmitter.
Note!
When free chlorine is measured with the pH compensation function on, always perform
calibration in the pH-compensated operating mode.
Endress+Hauser
15
Function
CCS140/CCS141
When you use pH compensation, the measured chlorine value displayed and applied to the
instrument output corresponds to the DPD measured value even if the pH values fluctuate. If
you do not use pH compensation, the measured chlorine value only corresponds to the DPD
measurement if the pH value remains unchanged compared with the calibration. Without pH
compensation the chlorine measuring system must be recalibrated when the pH value changes.
Accuracy of pH compensation
The accuracy of the pH compensated measured chlorine value depends on the sum of several
single measured deviations (chlorine, pH, temperature, DPD measurement etc.).
High amounts of hypochlorous acid (HOCl) during chlorine calibration have positive effects on
the accuracy whereas low amounts of hypochlorous acid have negative effects.
Inaccuracy of the pH compensated chlorine value increases the bigger the pH difference
between operation and calibration gets or the more inaccurate the single measured values are.
Calibration of free chlorine measurement taking into account the pH value
The reference measurement (DPD method, photometer) determines the complete free chlorine
by buffering to pH 6.3. In contrast to this, amperometric measurement only determines the
HOCl components.
The pH compensation causes the HOCl value to be increased to the actual value of free chlorine.
During operation, pH compensation is active up to a pH value of 9. Since there is hardly any
HOCl left at this pH value and the measured current is very low, calibration of the complete
measuring system makes sense only up to a pH value of the medium of 8 or 8.2.

Above these pH values the total measured error of the measuring system is inacceptable.
Flow
The membrane-covered sensor requires a minimum flow velocity of 15 cm/s (0.5 ft/s) in order
to function properly. When using the CCA250 flow assembly, this value corresponds to a flow
rate of 30 l/h (8 gal/h) (upper edge of float at level of red bar mark). At higher flow rates, the
measuring signal is virtually flow independent. At lower flow rates, the measuring signal
depends on the flow. If an INS proximity switch is installed in the assembly, too low flow rates
can reliably be detected, allowing to signal an alarm or to block the dosage pumps if required.
Temperature
Changes in the medium temperature influence the measuring signal. A temperature increase
causes the measured value to increase (approx. 4% per K), a temperature reduction causes it to
decrease. Therefore the temperature should remain constant after calibration of the chlorine
measuring point or a recalibration must be performed if the temperature has changed.
When using the sensor versions CCS140/141-N in combination with Liquisys M, an automatic
temperature compensation is performed. In this case, the temperature does not need to remain
constant and recalibrations after temperature changes are not required.

Commissioning
Commissioning
Note!
Read also the instructions on commissioning and operation in the Operating Instructions of
the used transmitter.
The power supply of the transmitter and the sensor may not be interrupted. After longer
power interruption (> 2 h), the sensor must be recommissioned (polarization time).
After commissioning, the sensor must be kept permanently wet.
Do not switch off the measuring system during interval operation! Dosing devices may be
controlled by timer switches.
However, if no disinfectant is dosed over a long period of time (several weeks), the sensor
must be disconnected from the transmitter, opened, emptied and stored dry (see chapter
"Storage").
6.1
6.2
Polarization
The voltage applied between cathode and anode by the transmitter polarizes the surface of the
gold electrode. Therefore, after switching on the transmitter with connected sensor, you have
to wait until the polarization period has elapsed before you can start the calibration.
To achieve a stable display value, the sensors need the following polarization periods:

Requirements
The sensor reading is stable (no drifts or unsteady values for at least 5 minutes). This is normally
fulfilled, when:
Zero-point adjustment
A zero-point adjustment is not required thanks to the zero stability of the membrane-covered
sensor.
If you, however, wish to perform a zero-point adjustment, operate the sensor in chlorine-free
water for at least 15 min.
Slope calibration
For slope calibration, perform the following steps:
18
1.
2.
Take a sample for DPD measurement. The sampling location has to be close to the installed
sensor. Use the sampling tap if available.
3.
Determine the free chlorine content with a photometer (e.g. CCM182, see accessories)
according to the DPD method. To do so, see the instructions on measurement of free
chlorine in the Operating Instructions of the photometer.
4.
Enter the measured value into the transmitter (see Operating Instructions of the
transmitter).
5.
After initial installation of the sensor, check the calibration by DPD measurement 24 hours
later.
Note!
Carry out a slope calibration every time the membrane or electrolyte is changed.
Endress+Hauser
CCS140/CCS141
Maintenance
Maintenance
Check the measurement at regular intervals; depending on the respective conditions at least
once a month.
Perform the following tasks:
If the membrane is visibly soiled, clean the sensor (see section "Cleaning the sensor").
Refill the sensor with electrolyte once per season or every 12 months. Depending on the
chlorine content on site, this period can be reduced or extended (see section "Refilling the
electrolyte").
Calibrate the sensor when necessary (see section "Calibration").
7.1
"
Caution!
Do not use chemicals reducing the surface tension.
When using hydrochloric acid, observe the safety regulations.
If the membrane is visibly soiled, proceed as follows:
1.
2.
Clean the membrane mechanically with a gentle water jet or put it for some minutes in
1 to 5 % hydrochloric acid without chemical additives.

Caution!
Do not touch or damage the electrodes!
The electrolyte is sensitive to oxidation: Always keep the electrolyte bottle closed after use.
Do not transfer the electrolyte into other containers!
The electrolyte should not be stored for more than 1 year and not yellow (use by date, see
label).
Avoid forming air bubbles when pouring the electrolyte into the measuring chamber!
20
Endress+Hauser
CCS140/CCS141
Maintenance
2.
Hold the measuring chamber at an angle and fill in about 7 to 8 ml (0.24 to 0.27 fl.oz)
electrolyte, up to the internal thread of the measuring chamber.
3.
Tap the filled measuring chamber several times on a flat surface so that adherent air
bubbles can detach and rise.
4.
Insert the sensor shaft vertically from above into the measuring chamber.
5.
Slowly tighten the measuring chamber to the stop. Excess electrolyte is pressed out at the
sensor bottom during the tightening.
7.4
7.5
During measurement, the electrolyte in the sensor is gradually exhausted by chemical reactions.
The silver chloride layer, applied to the anode at the factory, continues to grow epitaxially during
sensor operation. This has no effect on the reaction taking place at the cathode.
A change in color of the silver chloride layer, however, indicates effects on the reaction at the
cathode. Therefore, ensure by visual inspection that the grey-brown color of the anode has not
changed. If the anode color has changed, e.g. if it is spotted, white or silvery, the sensor must be
regenerated.
Send it to the manufacturer for this purpose.

Maintenance
CCS140/CCS141
7.6
Long-term operation (> 1 week) in chlorine-free media, i.e. with very low sensor currents, leads
to a deactivation of the sensor.
This deactivation is a continuous process that results in a lower slope and longer response times.
After long-term operation in a chlorine-free medium, the sensor must be reconditioned.
You need the following materials for reconditioning:
Demineralized water
Polishing sheet (see "Accessories")
Beaker
Approx. 100 ml (3.381 fl.oz) of chlorine bleach liquor NaOCl approx. 13 %, pharmaceutical
quality (available at chemical stores or pharmacies)
Proceed as follows:
1.
Close the medium inlet and outlet and make sure that no medium can squirt out of the
assembly.
2.
3.
4.
Polish the gold cathode of the sensor using the polishing sheet:
Place a wetted strip of the sheet in your hand.
Polish the gold cathode by moving it circularly on the strip.
Rinse the sensor with demineralized water.
5.
Top up the electrolyte if required (see chapter "Refilling the electrolyte") and screw the
measuring chamber back into place.
6.
Fill the beaker with chlorine bleach liquor to about 10 mm (0.39") and position it safely.
7.
"
Caution!
The sensor must not touch the liquid.
Place the sensor in the gaseous phase about 5 to 10 mm (0.2" to 0.39") above the chlorine
bleach liquor.

8.
The sensor current will now increase. The absolute value and the speed of increase depend
on the temperature of the chlorine bleach liquor.
When the sensor current has reached a value of several hundred nA, leave the sensor
under these conditions over a period of 20 min.
If the recommended current value cannot be reached, cover the beaker to avoid quick
air change.
9.
After the 20 min. have elapsed, re-install the sensor in the assembly.
10. Re-establish the medium flow. The sensor current will normalize.
11. After sufficient settling time (no noticeable drift), calibrate the measuring chain.

Installation
3.3.2
To get a flow through the bypass, pressure p1 has to be higher than pressure p2. Therefore, you
have to install an aperture in the main conduit ( 4, pos. 5).

Note!
The flow assembly must be installed upright.
Connect the process water with commercial fittings. You can use the normal sealing (e.g. teflon
tape) or an O-ring (e.g. EPDM).
Installation in the by-pass is preferable to installation in the process pipe as the by-pass pipe can
be blocked off without process interruption (you have to install shut-off valves upstream and
downstream from the flow assembly). This permits maintenance of the sensors without
interrupting the process.
A stop valve and a dirt trap (e.g.,a strainer) with a mesh size of 500 m must be located upstream
from the flow assembly. Pressure reducers usually contain a dirt trap, i.e. an additional dirt trap
is not required when a pressure reducer is installed.
Commissioning
For the version with an open outlet, you have to install a shut-off valve upstream.
Install a DN 5-8 sampling cock downstream from the flow assembly to permit reference
measurements according to the DPD method.
"
Caution!
The medium pressure must not exceed the maximum permissible pressure of the flow assembly
or of the sensors.
If the medium pressure exceeds 4 bar (58 psi), you have to install a pressure-relief valve.
3.3.3
Sensor installation
1.
Installation of proximity switch: Screw in all the way and lock with hex nut.
2.
3.
Insert the chlorine sensor in the mounting position and firmly tighten with the clamping screw.
4.
Remove the two dummy plugs, place the pH/ORP sensors in the openings with the Pg13.5
threads and screw in.
5.
Connect the sensors via the corresponding measuring cable to the transmitter.
Note!
Vent the assembly by unscrewing and screwing the vent screw at the time of the first
commissioning.
3.4
Post-installation check
After installation, check that all connections are firmly in position and leak-tight.
Check all hoses for damage.

Warning!
Danger of squirting medium.
Before applying the process pressure to the assembly, make sure the connections are correctly fitted.
Maintenance
Maintenance
Warning!
Risk of injury!
Before starting maintenance work on the assembly, make sure that the process line is depressurised,
empty and rinsed.
5.1
To ensure a reliable measurement, the assembly and the sensor must be cleaned at regular intervals.
The frequency and intensity of the cleaning operation depend on the process medium.
All parts in contact with the medium, e.g. the sensor and the sensor holder, must be cleaned at
regular intervals. Remove the sensor1).
Remove light dirt using suitable cleaning agents (see chapter "Cleaning agents").
Remove severe fouling with a soft brush and a suitable cleaning agent.
Remove persistant fouling by soaking in a liquid cleaner and if neccessary by cleaning with a soft
brush.
Note!
A typical cleaning interval for e.g. drinking water is at least half a year.
5.2
Note!
Clean the sensor outside only. Do not open it!
Do not use any abrasive cleaning agents. This can lead to irreparable damage of the sensor.
After cleaning the sensor, rinse the rinse chamber of the assembly with copious amounts of water.
Otherwise, remaining residues of cleaning agent can corrupt measurement.
If required, re-calibrate after cleaning.
5.3
Cleaning agents
The selection of the cleaning agent is dependent on the degree and type of contamination. The most
common contaminations and the suitable cleaning agents are listed in the following table.
1)
Type of contamination
Cleaning agent
Sulphide deposits
Protein deposits
11

pH measurement
The pH value is used as a unit of measurement for the acidity or alkalinity of a liquid medium. The membrane
glass of the electrode supplies an electrochemical potential which is dependent upon the pH value of the
medium. This potential is generated by the selective penetration of H+ ions through the outer layer of the
membrane. An electrochemical boundary layer with an electric potential forms at this point. An integrated
Ag/AgCl reference system serves as reference electrode.
The transmitter converts the measured voltage into the corresponding pH value using the Nernst equation.
General properties
Low maintenance
The sterilizable dirt-repellent PTFE ring diaphragm of the electrode prevents blocking and assures long-time
stability and accuracy.
Long service life
The double junction system of the metal lead offers better protection from electrode poisons and guarantees
a considerably longer service life.
Durability
Depending on the ordered version, the electrode is pressure proof up to 16 bar (232 psi) and can be applied
at temperatures of up to 135 C (275 F.)

Installation
Installation instructions
Do not install the electrode upside down. The inclination angle must be at least 15 from the horizontal. A
smaller inclination angle is not permitted as such an inclination results in air cushion forming in the glass
sphere. This might impair full wetting of the pH membrane with inner electrolyte.
"
Caution!
Make sure that the assemblys threaded connection for the electrode is clean and well running before
installing the electrode.
Hand tighten the electrode (3 Nm)! (Given value only applies to installation in Endress+Hauser assemblies.)
Make sure to follow the installation instructions in the operating instructions of the used assembly.
