Missing data if any, may be suitably assumed and stated.

IS: 456 and SP: 16 are allowed to be used.
PART A: Short answer questions (one/two sentences) 5 x 3 marks=15 marks
All questions are compulsory.
1.
2.
3.
4.
5.

What is a balanced section according to the working stress theory?

Write about partial safety factors in the limit state method of RC design.
Write in short on flat slabs.
What is the minimum eccentricity to be considered in the design of short columns?
Name the two types into which the slab types of stair case can be broadly divided into.

PART B: Analytical/Problem solving questions 5 x 5 marks=25 marks

All questions are compulsory.
6. A rectangular beam is 300 mm wide and 550mm effective depth. Determine the area of
tension reinforcement required in the section for it to be a balanced section.M20 concrete
and Fe 250 steel are used.
7. Determine the minimum effective depth required and the corresponding area of tension
reinforcement for a rectangular beam having a width of 200mm to resist an ultimate
moment of 200 kNm, using M20 concrete and Fe 415 HYSD bars.
8. Distinguish between the structural actions of one way and two way slabs.
9. What are the advantages of columns with helical reinforcement?
10. Explain the structural action of a combined footing.
PART C: Descriptive/Analytical/Problem solving questions 5 x 12 marks=60marks
11. A rectangular beam 300 mm x 600mm is reinforced with 3 nos. of 20mm diameter rods
on the tension side and 2 nos. of 16 mm diameter rods on the compression side. Effective
cover to both faces may be taken as 50mm. Estimate the moment of resistance of the
section by working stress method. Use M 20 grade concrete and Fe 415 steel.
OR
12. a) A rectangular beam of M15 concrete is 250mm wide and 500mm deep overall. Four
20mm dia steel rods of Fe 415 grade are provided as tension reinforcement at an effective
cover of 40mm. Find the depth of neutral axis.
4 Marks
b) Calculate the moment of resistance of a singly reinforced concrete beam having
300mm width and 400mm effective depth. It is reinforced with 3 bars of 12mm diameter.
M20 concrete and Fe 415 steel are used.

13. Design a simply supported beam of span 6m to carry a superimposed load of 25kN/m, by
Limit State method.
OR
14. Determine the ultimate moment carrying capacity of the T beam. Given: bf = 800mm, Df
= 150mm, bw = 300mm, d= 420mm, Ast = 5 nos. of 20 mm dia bars on tension side.
Assume Fe 415 steel and M20 concrete. Also compute the maximum stresses in steel and
concrete if it is subjected to a design moment of 100 kNm.
15. Design a one way slab with a clear span of 3.5m, simply supported on 200 mm thick
masonry walls to support a live load of 4 kN/m2. Adopt M20 concrete and Fe 415 steel.
OR
16. Design a two way slab for a room 5.5m x 4.0 m clear in size if the superimposed load is 5
kN/m2. Use M20 concrete and Fe 415 steel. Corners are not held down.
17. Design the reinforcement in a circular column of diameter 300mm to support a service
axial load of 800kN. The column has an unsupported length of 3m and is braced against
side sway. The column is reinforced with helical ties. Assume M20 concrete and Fe 415
steel.
OR
18. Design a short column under biaxial bending with the following data.
Unsupported length of column = 3.5m
Size of column 400mm x 400mm
Factored load= 1300kN
Factored moment Mux =190kNm
Muy = 110kNm
M25 concrete and Fe 415 steel are used.
19. Design an isolated footing for a column 300mm x 500mm reinforced with 6, 25mm dia
bars with Fe 415 steel and M25 concrete, subject to a factored axial load Pu= 1000kN and
a factored uniaxial moment Mux=120kNm (with respect to the major axis) at the column
base. Assume that moment is reversible. The safe bearing capacity of soil may be taken
as 300kN/m2at a depth of 1.25m. Assume M20 concrete and Fe 415 steel for footing.
OR
20. Design one of the flights of a dog-legged stairs spanning between landing beams using
the following data.
Type of stair case: dog legged with waist slab, treads and risers.
No. of steps in the flight = 10
Tread T = 300mm
Rise R = 150 mm
Width of landing beams = 300mm
Use M20 concrete and Fe 415 steel.
