Objective:
The objective of this experiment to observe some existing hand tool (Hack-saw) as well as
designing new hand tool (Hack-saw) using ergonomic principles to eliminate the existing
shortcoming.

Hand Tool Assigned:

The hand tool which is assigned to study & develop a more ergonomically efficient & modular
design is the Hack-saw.

Characteristics of Existing Hack-Saw:

The hacksaw is used to cut steel and other metals. It can also be used to cut plastics, although it is
not normally used to cut woods. It is sometimes called an adjustable hacksaw because the length
of the frame can be altered to hold blades of different sizes. Blades are supplied in two lengths,
250mm and 300mm. If the adjusting screw is unscrewed, the frame can be pushed into the handle
so that the smaller blades fit the hacksaw. Blades are also described by the number of teeth per
inch (TPI). Blades have 14, 18, 24, 32 teeth per 25mm (inch). A blade with 14 TPI is coarse whilst
a blade with 32 TPI is very fine.

Parts of existing hack-saw:

Most Hacksaws are made from Low Tungsten Steel or Carbon Steel; however the more expensive
blades are made from High Speed Steel. In general hack-saw consists of
1. Frame.
2. Blade
3. Handle.

Frame:
There are two types of Hacksaw Frame, a fixed and an adjustable. The fixed frame can only take
one length of Blade, but is more rigid that the adjustable type, which can take blades of different
lengths.

Blade:
There are also two main types of Blades, but in the case of both, the teeth on the Blade are facing
away from the Handle towards the front of the hacksaw.
The first type of Blade is the All Hard Blade which has been hardened throughout. As a result
there is more efficient cutting but the blade tends to break more easily.
The second type of Blade is the Flexible Blade which has hardened teeth but the remainder of
the body remains soft. The Blade, as a result, is more flexible and breaks less easily. It is an ideal
blade for the school workshop as it will take rougher treatment.
When fitting a new blade to a hacksaw, point the teeth forward, (away from the handle). Tighten
the wing nut to remove the slack and then as a general rule tighten three turns. It is important to
have the correct tension on the blade, if it is too loose then the blade will buckle and not cut
straight, and if it is too tight damage to the blade ends or the frame may result.

Handle:
The handle is generally made of metal or plastic. Or it may be made of metal then covered by a
plastic covering. Although it is not very comfortable as it does not absorb any compressive force
applied by the palm of hand, it is the general construction of the handle of the hack-saw. The
handle also holds the other end of the blade .Generally the shape of the handle is not designed for
comfort as it is not the opposite shape of the palm and finger of hand when it is closed.

Proposed model:
For the new modified designed an extra front handle is added in the middle of the frame. It is
important for holding the hacksaw as well as it gives extra force for cutting. Also the front handle
is rotatable so user can easily use the handle in both hand as per his comfort.

Parts of modified hack-saw:

This mechanized hack-saw consists of

Frame.

Blade holder.

Blade.

Back handle.

Rotatable Front handle.

Frame:
The frame holds everything in place for proper functioning of the hack-saw. It consists of the slide
ways for the blade holder. The slide ways for the blade holder is made of a smooth machine
finished round rod and a semi-circular cylinder. This slide ways help the blade holder to reciprocate
with least amount of friction. At the tail end of the machine there is the back handle. There is also
a handle at the mid position of the body.

Blade holder:
This part holds the blade in place .The holes for connecting the blade is situated in such a way so
that the blade is tightened while assembling with it.

Blade:
As nut is used for adjusting the blade user can use any kind of blade for operation. The blade can
be assembled in both way facing toward or away from the back handle.

Back handle:
The back handle is designed in traditional way but it gives comfort to the user for its smooth
gripped design. It is situated at the back of the body, parallel to the forearm while holding. So the
compressive force is distributed to all fingers.

Rotatable Front handle:

The front handle is adjusted at the mid position of the body. It helps to stabilize the hacksaw and
gives extra pressure for cutting. The shape of the handle is designed in such a way so that it gives
comfort while holding it.
Both handle is covered with soft rubber with reduce compressive force while holding.

Comparison of modified design with existing design:

The modified design has an extra front handle where the existing product has only a back
handle. The two handle (front & back) is used for minimizing pressure on one hand.

The front handle is rotatable. So the user can easily move the front handle as per his
comfort.

The modified hacksaw keeps the wrist position natural. So the user can easily works with
it for a long time.

Gripper is added for better comfort.

Conclusion:
As designing the Hacksaw it is learn that Human factor is very important in improving any
existing tool specially hand tool. Hand tool should be designed in such a way that wrist
position should remain natural in operation.
Handle should be designed in such a way so that compressive force may be reduced as well
as use of index finger should be reduced.
For ergonomic design highest importance is given to the human factor.
A well designed hand tool not only for the comfort of the worker but production rate is also
increased.
The modified hacksaw is little expensive but in terms of comfort and production rate its
necessity must be realized.
Overall during the experiment it is clear that an ergonomic design is related to the human
factor such as comfort, safety etc. not to the cost of the machine.
