Student Name:

Newtons Laws of Motion Falling Bodies Investigation

Criterion B: Inquiring and designing
Criterion C: Processing and evaluating
Statement of inquiry
Newtons 3 laws of motion make it possible to predict the
motion of a body if the forces acting on the body and the
mass of the body are known.
You have studied Newtons laws of motion, now you need to apply
your knowledge to the situation of a falling body.
[Please note that the word body is often used by physicists instead
of object we wont be looking at any falling human bodies in this
investigation!]
Your Task
You will design your own investigation for this assessment.
The body that you use could be any number of things:
a ball

a parachute
a stone

a balloon

a paper helicopter

an apple (if you are Newton)

endless.

the list is

Also, remember that the body could be falling through something

other than air it could be falling through a liquid such as water or
oil.
Next, think of the variables that could become the basis of your
investigation:
Mass

Surface Area

Kind of Liquid

Distance

Velocity
Acceleration
Time

Weight

Length

Speed

For criterion B you will formulate a testable hypothesis (research

question) and explain it using scientific reasoning. You must design
a fair test i.e. the independent variable is changed, the dependent

variable is measured and everything else is controlled.

To have sufficient data you should have a least 5 different
values of your independent variable and take repeated
measurements of your dependent variable
Your hypothesis should be explained fully by referring to
Newtons laws of motion.
For criterion C you will collect and transform data from the
experiment into a table and a graph. Then you must interpret this
data and explain the results of the investigation using scientific
reasoning.
The graph and table should be presented in the required
format, any calculations done using the data should be done
correctly and clearly explained
You should refer back to the hypothesis you made in your plan
were you correct? Why/ why not?
You should consider the strengths and weaknesses of the
method you have used and suggest improvements to the
method or follow-up investigations.
