Service Letter

MC Engine Pistons
Engine types 50-90 MC/MCE
Dear Sirs,
Fretting between the piston crown and piston rod has been observed on some engines in service, and in rare cases fine cracks
have appeared. However, we have received no reports of the
service of the engine being interrupted for this reason.
The intention with this Service Letter is to inform you of the
appearance of the fretting and to outline how fretting can be
remedied by machining the piston crown and the piston rod.
The methods and remedies outlined are to be taken into consideration only in connection with routine overhaul of pistons
and do not call for any immediate action.
The two types of damage that have occurred can be remedied as
follows:
'DPDJHGVXUIDFHVZLWKRXWFUDFNV
Any damage to the mating surfaces of the piston crown and
piston rod should be removed by machining. The total amount
of material machined off must be less than 1 mm. Furthermore, a relief groove and a tapered assembling surface must
be introduced on the piston crown, Fig. 1.
'DPDJHGVXUIDFHVZLWKVPDOOFUDFNV
If cracks have developed, they can in most cases be machined
off, and an intermediate spacer ring of special hardened
steel can be installed, as shown in Fig. 2. The contact face
of the piston crown is to be machined with a relief groove
and a tapered assembling surface.

Reg.No.: 24 231

The spacer rings can be supplied in 5 mm thickness (50 bore

engines = 4 mm), and consequently the maximum to be machined
off the piston crown and rod combined is 6 mm (50 bore
engines = 5 mm).
If more extensive machining becomes necessary, various repair
solutions are available. In this case please contact MAN B&W
Diesel A/S in Copenhagen for further assistance.

If the landing surface on the piston rod is in good condition
and has been machined less than 1 mm (original measurements
in Fig. 1), a piston crown with original dimensions can be
mounted.
If the above conditions are not met, the rod is to be
machined to 5 mm below the original measurement (50 bore
engines = 4 mm) and a spacer ring of special hardened steel
is to be installed on the rod in order to restore the rod to
its original dimensions.
In all cases it is essential to ensure that the height of the
intermediate spacer corresponds exactly to the height of the
material removed in order not to affect the compression and
maximum combustion pressures in service. For original reference
measurements, see the Table in Fig. 1.
If repair becomes necessary, please contact the engine builder,
one of our Service Centres or Authorised Repair Shops, or MAN
B&W Diesel A/S in Copenhagen.
Yours faithfully,
MAN B&W Diesel A/S

Encl.
