EVENING (B)

No(4)
L = 36.58 m , B = 6.906 m , Wall-sided barge, T = 1.524 m (Even Keel), KG = 2.133 m
GM = ? , and Drafts = ?

Lost Buoyancy

= ( x 2 x 6.096 x 6.096 x 1.524 ) + (24.38 x 6.096 x 1.524) = 283.13 m3

=283.13 m3 x

1.025 ton
=290.2 ton
1 m3

Bilge compartment volume, vc = x 2 x 6.096 x 6.096 x 1.524 = 84.5 m3

Lost buoyancy volume,

v = vc = 0.95 x 84.5 = 80.275 m3

Lost Waterplane Area

Aw = ( x 2 x 6.096 x 6.096 ) + (24.38 x 6.096) = 185.78 m2
Lost waterplane area,

a =s as = 1 x x 2 x 6.096 x 6.096 = 37.16 m2

Remaining waterplane area, Aw = Aw a = 148.62 m2

Parallel sinkage,

s = v/Aw = 80.275/148.62 = 0.54 m

Since the barge is wall-sided, even keel and two bilge compartments at each ends are the same sizes
and dimensions, the result drafts after damage are also even keel and the same parallel sinkage.
Therefore, TA = TF = 1.524-0.54 = 2.064 m
KG = 2.133 is not change after damage condition.
For damage condition,
BM = I/
I = (24.38 x 6.0963)/12 = 460.24 m4
= 283.13 -80.275 = 202.855 m3
BM = 460.24/202.855 = 2.269 m
KB = T/2 = 2.064/2 = 1.032 m

Therefore, GM after damage is,

GM = BM-BG = BM (KG - KB) = 2.269 (2.133- 1.032)

GM = 1.168 m

L = 170.688m, D = 12.802 m ,
Max: bending moment, M = 46260 ft-ton = 14103.66 ton-m
Max: allowable bending stress, = 1.395 ton/cm2

Assume maximum bending moment occurs at the admidship (midship section).

top = M ctop / I

, where, ctop = 12.802-5.791 = 7.011m

bot = M cbot / I

, where, cbot = 5.791m

If top = 1.395 ton/cm2,

I = Mctop/ top
I = (14103.66 ton-m x 7.011 m) / 1.395 ton/cm2 = 70882.265 cm2-m2

If bot = 1.395 ton/cm2,

I = Mcbot/ bot
I = (14103.66 ton-m x 5.791 m) / 1.395 ton/cm2 = 58042.374 cm2-m2

If moment of inertia is larger, the bending stress will be smaller. Therefore, for minimum bending
stress at midship section, choose larger moment of inertia.
Therefore,

I = 70882.265 cm2-m2

If ctop > cbot , top > bot , therefore, maximum bending stress occurs at deck plating.
Consequently, maximum shear stress occurs in the other flange (deck) at the same time.
