GAUTHAM NAIR K. P.
RWTH AACHEN UNIVERSITY
MASTER OF SCIENCE IN PRODUCTION
SYSTEMS ENGINEERING

"All of us do not have equal talent. But, all of us have an equal opportunity to
develop our talents.
- A.P.J Abdul Kalam (former President of
India)

I learned the above quote while I was in my higher secondary, and it has been an
inspiration for me to choose the area of engineering as my career. As a child, I was
always intrigued by the working of complex mechanisms and equipments. I used to
spend a lot of time trying to explore and figure out their principle. The wide array of
showcased toy machines which I used to play with in my childhood had helped me to
shape and develop my aptitude for pursuing mechanical engineering at the graduation
level. In order to understand its basic concepts I took part in science fairs, tech fests, and
practical workshops during this programme. This exposure taught me the importance
of simple and practical design. In fine, for understanding the principles and practical
aspects of designing a product I have decided to pursue my career in engineering.
The structure of the under graduate program I completed was adequate to bring out my
talent and curiosity in Mechanical Engineering and by the end of that programme I had
made up my mind to join for post graduate programmes in the discipline. The
laboratory experiences, practical workshops, seminars and symposiums I attended and
the project work I completed motivated me to towards this aim. I wish to pursue a
career in research that involves creative thinking, challenging problems and is also
relevant to the industry in particular and society in general. My keen interest in
Manufacturing and Design field accompanied by good analytical skills, problem solving
capabilities and visualization which are the heart and core of research have prompted
me to go in for graduate studies. I understand that I can achieve my aim by pursuing
my post graduate programmes in an alien university/country where this discipline has
set a benchmark for the rest of the world.
My passion for science started grooming when I opted science stream for my higher
secondary learning and came out with the highest grade of A+ in all the courses of the
program. Soon I appeared for the Engineering Entrance Examination conducted by the
Government of Kerala, India, qualified it, and joined for B. Tech Programme in
Mechanical Engineering at Vidya Academy of Science & Technology, Thrissur, Kerala.
In the four years of my undergraduate study, I got exposed to diverse topics ranging
from Thermodynamics, Fluid Mechanics to Computer Integrated Manufacturing. As
per the requirements of the institute I was also exposed to the needs and aspirations of
the industry through a series of well orchestrated lectures by eminent people who are

leaders in their field. These courses have helped me build a strong foundation in
Mechanical Engineering and laid the necessary groundwork for pursuing graduate
studies.
The syllabi and curriculum offered to us for the under graduate program demand us to
do a mini project and a major project based on any subject under mechanics in the sixth
and the final semesters respectively. For the mini project I worked on the topic Model
and Study of Submarine, which gave me an insight into moulding a proto type of a
submarine.
For the major project work, a team comprising of 4 others and myself wanted to do
something which would later become useful to the society. We realised that one of the
major issues that is widely debated in our society is the environmental hazards of using
plastic and the management of plastic waste. Our group, therefore, selected the topic,
Production of Fuel from Waste Plastics, for our project study, which was very much
appreciated by the institution and university authorities. Out of my strong conviction
that knowledge of computers is a pre requisite in todays academic endeavours, which
involves analyzing complex structures and designs in a relatively short time, I credited
Computer Aided Design in my final year. Following this, I attended two months
software training programme in CATIA. . I have also cleared IELTS with overall band
score of 6.5. To serve my ambition of pursuing post graduation in Germany, I have
successfully completed the German Language Courses and Examinations conducted by
the GOETHE INSTITUT.

Besides, I fully utilised all the opportunities for attending the tech fests, seminars and
symposiums on relevant topics hosted by other institutions in and out my State. Apart
from my studies, I got opportunity to represent my institution at the university level in
various sports and games events and to be a contributor in adding glory to my
institution.
Being a dedicated student, I made sure to keep up an SGPA of more than 7.5 and I
successfully completed my B. Tech Program with a credit of 218.50 in the final semester
and an overall CGPA of 7.70. I had a clean record without any backlogs in all 8
semesters of my undergraduate programme. My Goethe-Zertifikat A1: Start Deutsch 1
and Goethe-Zertifikat A2: Start Deutsch 2 scores are 77 per cent and 82 per cent
respectively.

I would be glad if I am given a research or a teaching assistantship because in addition

to easing the financial burden on me, it would go a long way in preparing me for a
career in research and teaching. I look forward to a challenging career in research which
may even be arduous and demanding at times but I am confident that with my sincerity
and dedication, I will be able to make a meaningful contribution to the ongoing
research developments and live up to the desired standards of your university.

Germany, being one of the most developed countries in the world is also a land of
opportunity for students who want to dig deep into their subject of interest. Its
technological advancements are widely appreciated, accepted and adopted by people
all over the world. Being a mechanical engineering aspirant, I believe that studying in
Germany can give me greater exposure to the practical and technical aspects of my
already acquired theoretical knowledge on mechanical engineering and would broaden
my boundaries, enhance my knowledge and improve my abilities. This would allow me
to grow as a human being and also as a mechanical engineer.
My objective is to enhance and strengthen my knowledge base in the field of
Mechanical Engineering. The ideal path towards this, I feel, would be by pursuing
graduate studies in Mechanical Engineering. In the long run I seek to be the leader in
my field, which requires fostering of team spirit and goodwill, besides intellectual and
creative enrichment. I feel that RWTH AACHEN UNIVERSITY with its rich blend of
competent faculty, intense curriculum, state of the art laboratories and cherished history
of success would be the ideal place to shape my career. The innovative research projects
being undertaken by your faculty along with the positive feedbacks that I have received
about your university from my native friends and from my professors influenced me to
seek admission into your university.
India hosts a highly diverse socio- cultural environment. As our Father of the Nation,
Mahatma Gandhi had observed, Unity in Diversity is our strength. Our social fabric is
characterised by the happy synthesis of different races, religions, communities,
languages, and wide ranging customs, beliefs, and rituals practiced by those. Myself,
born and brought up in such a heterogeneous social environment, have learned the
values and morals of fraternity and compassion early from my childhood and through
all the social circles and institutions I have attended. With this rich multi-cultural social
experience and tradition, I firmly believe that I can very well synchronise myself with
the diverse student community in your university, work and live in perfect harmony
with them.
