CHARACTERISTICS
253 MA is a Nitrogen alloyed heat
resistant Cr-Ni austenitic stainless steel.
Optimal performance is achieved at 8501100 C, and the scaling temperature is
1150 C.
Its specific characteristics are:
Austenitic micro structure.
High mechanical strength at elevated
temperatures.
Low sensitivity to form sigma phase.
High resistance to:
oxidation.
high temperature corrosion.
Good ductility and weldability.
DIMENSIONS
AST 253 MA is manufactured to
minimum quantites in most standard sizes
within Outokumpu Stainless Tubular
Products product range.

DESIGN
The creep strength is much higher
than those for common high
temperature austenitic steels.
This means that the possibility of
designing thinner walls can save cost.
Lower cost for material, transport,
welding and maintenance.
FABRICATION
Welding
Recommended welding methods for tube
and pipe are GTAW, PAW and MMA.
Filler metal of type Avesta 253 MA or
similar should be used.
Welding without filler metal not followed
by post weld heat treatment, will reduce
the corrosion resistance of the weld, and is
therefore not recommended.
The base of the shielding and welding
gases should consist of pure Ar with
Cold forming
Excellent cold forming properties. The
same properties as for other standard
austenitic stainless steels.
Hot forming
253 MA is slightly harder at higher
temperatures than austenitic standard
grades. Forming at temperatures in the
range 900-1150 C does not require any
post heat treatment, if the operation is
followed by a reasonable fast cooling.
(>600 C/min).
Heat treatment
1020-1100 C followed by rapid
cooling.
