The CATS have been amended with respect to theoretical knowledge requirements
(syllabi) for Pilot licences and ratings.
The new syllabi are downloadable from the homepage of the CAA website
(http://www.caa.co.za) under Legal notices. Please see below for the correct
Appendix.
This syllabus has been amended to correct the regulation numbering in the Air law
section and include a section on the AIP.
This appendix and its changes have been implemented with immediate effect.
Overall Appendix 2.0A and B have been modernised to include some of the latest
technology found in aircraft and antiquated items have been removed.
These appendices will come into effect on 13 January 2014 and the old syllabus will
then immediately be discontinued, meaning each individual will move to the new
system.
Candidates will not lose any credits held for passes in examinations under the old
syllabi subject to the provisions of the regulations.
Please note that the number of examinations remain unchanged as it is only the
content of the examinations that have been affected.
Particulars of the study material suggested by the CAA to prepare for the CPL and
ATPL exams may be found in the list below, as well as in AIC 009/2014.
No examination manuals have been placed on the CAA website. The manual for the
CPL and ATPL Flight planning and performance examinations has been based on
the CAP 696, CAP 697 and CAP 698 documents. These documents were obtained
under contract from the UK CAA and may be downloaded from the website
www.caa.co.uk. Candidates are advised to exercise care in the use of these
manuals because they do contain a small number of references to European
legislation, JAR-FCL and JAR-OPS criteria, which are not necessarily identical to
RSA legislation.
Currently, the main reference documents are:
