1.0 OBJECTIVE
Is to define the requirements for supply and laying of block work for the
buildings and utilities under the contract no AE/042/2015-2016/W/02,

2.0 SCOPE

This work procedure enumerates the scope of masonry work to be executed in the
foundations/substructures, superstructures of different Structures/Units as specified in the
approved drawings and at places when instructed by the Engineer.

4.0 RESPONSIBILITY
4.1 SITE MANAGER
The site manager will provide inputs to the project execution plan to ensure that lifting
strategies & philosophy are addressed. And is responsible for the overall management of
the project construction team to ensure that safe and effective operations are conducted
and properly documented.

4.2 EQUIPMENT MANAGER/MECHANICAL


The equipment manager will be responsible for the transporting equipments availability
and good order.

4.3 SITE ENGINEER


Shall report to Site Manager, Shall be responsible for planning, execution and
implementation of all site activities related to this procedure.

4.4 SITE SUPERVISOR/MASON FOREMAN


Shall report to Site Engineer.
Shall be responsible for execution of construction activity.
Shall also prepare daily site construction records.
4.5 QC ENGINEER
Shall report to site Engineer
Shall be responsible for attending all Inspection Stages as required by Inspection
test Plan.
Shall be responsible of performing all checks and shall prepare necessary Inspection
Reports.

4.6 HSE OFFICER


Shall report to Site Manager and shall be responsible for overall control and
inspection of HSE issues.

5.0 MATERIAL REQUIRED


Material in this construction activity includes;
5.1 Solid concrete masonry block
5.2 Burnt brick
5.3 Cement
5.4 Sand
5.5 Damp Proof Course
5.6 Steel masonry accessories
5.7 Grout, etc

6.0 NECCESSARY EQUIPMENT AND TOOLS


Below is the equipment and tools involved in the construction of block work
6.1 Nail
6.2 Grinder for block cutting
6.3 Scaffolding platform
6.4 Electric drills
6.5 Trowels and hand tools
6.6 Spade
6.7 Wheel barrow
6.8 Masonry saw
6.9 Spirit level
6.10 3m long aluminum straight edge
6.11 Mason square
6.12 Measuring tape
6.13 Plump Bob
6.14 Survey instrument

7.0 HEALTH AND SAFETY


7.1 Prior to the construction of block work, scaffolding spanning the work area is
constructed up to the level of the construction. The scaffold is to b designed to be able
to hold the material that is to be used in the block work construction. Scaffolding will
be erected so that it will allow each mason free access without being tied off.
7.2 All workers working at height will have to wear safety harnesses with lanyard
7.3 The areas where the block work activities are in progress will be barricaded
7.4 Furthermore health and safety will be as per HSE

8.0 PROCEDURE OF MASONRY BLOCK WORK


8.1 Ensure that material, sample and this method statement is approved and masonry
accessories are approved
8.2 Masonry delivered to site shall be carefully unloaded and handed to prevent chipping
and breakage and random sample to be send for testing (All Material shall be tested
prior to using it)
8.3 Masonry unit shall be stored in dry location
8.4 Verify that all reinforcing, anchors, dowels, lintels, flashings, and other built in items
are on hand, of proper size, and locations are established
8.5 Before commencement of work, ascertain the nature and locations of all openings in
the drawings
8.6 The surveyor will mark out the layout for the block work using current layout
drawing approved
8.7 The size of block work shall be as per specification and approved drawings
8.8 Approved DPC material shall be pre-laid into base of the wall along alignment of the
block wall, the width of the DPC shall be the same as the particular thickness of the
wall
8.9 first layer of block should be fully set out with proper alignment
8.10 Blocks shall be properly laid on fully bed of mortar. Mortar joint thickness
for the general mortar will be 8mm to 12mm
8.11 Mortar mixing
Mortar made on site will be manually mixed by labourer
Mortar mixing ratio will be as per specification
8.12 Place masonry to lines and levels indicated.
8.13 Masonry units will be assembled together overlapped, so the vertical joints
will are staggered from course to course. At the corner and wall intersection the
overlapping should be the minimum width of the unit. Only cut dimension units
will be used at these locations.
8.14 All the horizontal joints shall be leveled and the vertical joints shall be
aligned during construction
8.15 Install reinforced concrete lintels over openings in block walls.
8.16 Stiffener columns and beam shall be provided as per approved drawings
8.17 Block work shall be built to the respective dimension, height and thickness
mentioned in the drawing
8.18 Curing, damp cure the block works for 3 days, lintel and sills for 7 days as
per project specification.
8.19 Cleaning; as the work proceed, carefully remove mortar splashes from
masonry surface and adjoining surfaces. After completing each section of the
wall, clear down surface and make good were necessary.

9.0 INSPECTION AND TEST PLAN


1) Visual defects:
No Lumps of mortar is to be seen in the finished work in the joints etc.

No loose blocks or disturbed blocks or joints to be seen after work is


complete.

2) Verticality:
Inner face- for every one meter height + 3mm (not cumulative)

Outer face- for every one meter height + 5mm (not cumulative)

3) Plumb bond:
For ordinary block work plumb bond shall be within + 5mm (not
cumulative but on the centre line of the plumb).

Alignment, Corners and angles:


- No variation in the layout of the angles specified.
Adhesion:
All courses must be truly filled in the joints with mortar (no holes partly or
through holes must be seen in the work)
Water penetration:
When a jet of water is allowed on one surface of block work, water should not
be seen coming out through the joints on the other side.
