Use this checklist below to determine if there are housekeeping issues in your workplace. If you answer no
to any of the questions below you may need to implement better housekeeping practices in your workplace.

HEALTH AND SAFETY POLICIES
Are workers aware of safe operating procedures and the requirements
of the law with regards to occupational housekeeping?
Have workers been trained in general housekeeping practices and safe
operating procedures?
Are housekeeping inspections using checklists conducted regularly?
Have the roles and responsibilities of each worker been clearly
outlined and communicated?
Is there a reporting mechanism in place that covers housekeeping
issues (e.g., storage problems, broken equipment, burnt-out light bulbs,
clogged toilet, etc.)?
WORK AREAS
Are all work and storage areas kept clean and free of debris and waste
throughout the workday?
Is the access to all entrances, walkways, and emergency exits kept clear
and unblocked at all times?
Is the worksite adequately lit?
Are ventilation systems kept clear of dust, debris and obstructions?
EXITS/ENTRANCES
Are exits and entrance ways kept unobstructed, clean and dry and in
good condition at all times?
Are site access and exit points well marked?
GROUND/FLOORS/STAIRWAYS
Are there any trip hazards including steps or uneven surfaces that
need immediate repair?
Are floors, stairs and access ways kept unobstructed, clean, and dry and
in good condition at all times?
Are floors, stairs and access ways free of trip hazards and protrusions?
Are walkways wide enough for equipment and safety accessible?
Have cables, cords and wires been covered or taped-down so they are
securely out of the way?
Do spills get cleaned up quickly and properly?

DUST AND DIRT REMOVAL
Does the work site get vacuumed or mopped frequently?
Are workers made aware of the risks when using compressed air for
removing dust or debris?
Does debris or spills get cleaned up quickly and properly?
STORAGE
Is equipment stored in designated areas when not in use?
Have employees been trained in material storage and handling
procedures?
Are the designated storage areas orderly?
Are materials stacked appropriately and securely?
If racking is used, is it appropriate and in good condition?
Do open drawers and cabinets get closed immediately?
WASTE DISPOSAL
Have safe removal procedures for both hazardous and non-hazardous
substances been established, instructed and followed?
Have waste bins and containers been appropriately labelled and paced
throughout the work site in accessible locations?
Do waste materials and debris get disposed of as often as necessary,
and are waste bins/containers emptied at least once daily?
Are oily or greasy rags put in covered metal containers (away from
ignition sources) and disposed of regularly and according to WHMIS
guidelines?
Have fire hazards been reduced by keeping the workplace free of
accumulated combustible materials and waste?
Are workers wearing personal protective equipment when removing
hazardous waste materials?
LIGHTING
Is the lighting in storage and work areas adequate?
Are light bulbs checked and replaced?

TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT
Is there proper maintenance of tools and equipment with regular
inspections to check that they are always in safe working condition?
Are there designated storage areas with approved and labelled
containers for all tools and equipment?
Do workers return tools and materials to their proper locations
immediately after use?
MAINTENANCE
Is proper maintenance of workers facilities (e.g., kitchen and
bathrooms) conducted?
Are all work areas and worker areas inspected on a regular basis?
