Homework 1

Part I: DUE: 09-06-12 in class. No homework will be accepted past the due date and
time.
(10 pts) Find an article of your choice in the IEEE/ASME Transactions of Mechatronics. Read it
and write a 1-page summary highlighting the objective, the methodology followed and the conclu-
sions. Be sure to include the complete citation (authors, volume, year, pages) in your paper.

Part II: DUE: 09-13-12 in class. No homework will be accepted past the due date and
time.

1. A piezoelectric transducer is a device capable of converting mechanical to electric energy and


viceversa. One kind of piezoelectric actuator can be understood as an elastic rod which can
be extended or compressed by an internal force proportional to the applied voltage, as shown
in Figure 1. Considering the actuator as a 1-port, (the applied voltage is the eort) which 2
bond graph elements can be used in a cascade to represent the system?

2. Figure 2 represents an ideal DC motor with torque constant driven by a voltage source
with line resistance R. The motor drives a pair of ideal gears. The large gear is connected
to a cable drum which raises a block of mass m. The block slides on guides with viscous
friction (linear, with coecient b). Obtain a bond graph representation by inspection. Assign
causality and power directions (use the thru-power convention). Label the graph completely,
showing the values of the various parameter elements (transformer moduli, resistance, etc.).
MCE403: assume that the drum has negligible inertia. MCE503: consider an inertia I3 for
the drum.
