Elementary Class Newsletter

April 16, 2018

We only have 6 weeks left of school! Yet my, oh my, there is so much
happening in these 6 x 7 = 42 days of school. So sit back and relax, this
newsletter is goin’ to be a long one!!

In the Classroom

The 1st and 2nd grade kids have been studying volcanoes! Their research resulted in magnificent
paper mache volcanoes! They have been practicing their team work skills and their artistic
expression through multi-media. Bob Ross was a huge inspiration to the kids as they were
painting their volcanoes. First and second graders have been enjoying independent work time in
their Miquon and Explode the Code workbooks. We are also diving into the intricacies of the
food web and the different ecosystems around the world.

The Amethyst Kids are studying poetry and writing our own poetry chapbooks, or small books of
poetry that we will publish at year’s end. We are studying 14 poetry forms, as well as inventing our
own. In math class we are busy measuring! Each day we measure the temperature and rainfall, and
we’re also measuring and recording our heights on the wall. We’re planning to measure many things
around the school, and we’ll conclude our measurement unit with a hands-on study of liquid volume
that culminates with a baking project. We are also learning about coral reef food webs, writing pen pal
letters to our friends in Ghana, reading the fantasy classic A Wizard of Earthsea (by Ursula LeGuin) as
a class, beginning to read Oregon Battle of the Books novels for next year’s competition, reading
Charlotte’s Web in the Chapter Book Club, preparing for Science Camp next week, learning about
exponents and cubes in math class, and designing Equivalent Fractions Board Games for creative
math.

Announcements, Field Trips, and Events

(1) The Beach Field Trip is TOMORROW! Meet at Coffee Heaven (9:30 am) to carpool,
then drive to Crescent City for an 11 am appointment with Lee at the North Coast Marine
Mammal Center. After, we will walk across the street and from 12:30-1:30 pm eat lunch, play
at the park, collect trash from the beach, and conduct a simple science experiment. We’ll head
home at 1:30 pm.
(2) Research Projects time is a’coming! Please help your child choose a
research topic by next Monday the 23rd. They can study anything (please, no
video games). Title I funds will be used to purchase one book per child to help
their research. Children will present their research projects during the final two
weeks of school. Families will need to help at home! We’ll send home guidelines
after topics are chosen.

(3) The Dome School is in The New York Times this week! The article
discusses the budget shortfalls faced by states, Oregon in particular, as a result
of pension promises. We were included because in September 2017, officers took
two hours to respond to an emergency at the school; the cause for the delay was
attributed to Josephine County’s budget cuts, which were partly caused by
pension obligations. The headline is “A $76,000 Monthly Pension: Why States and
Cities are Short on Cash.”

(5) Every year since 1994, thousands of schoolchildren and families pledge to
spend one-week screen-free. We decided to give it a go this year, and join in.
Screen-Free Week is April 30 – May 4. It’s entirely voluntary; families who
choose to pledge to go screen-free will receive Pledge Badges, ideas for Screen-
Free activities, and a super cool Certificate to conclude the week.

(6) Running Club has been up and running! We meet Tuesdays and Thursdays,
8:30-9:10. Meet outside on the concrete slab. Everyone welcome.

(7) Science Camp is next week! (3rd-5th). Chaperone and Kitchen sign-ups
are posted inside the Amethyst Room (above the ‘Mirror of Self-Love.’). The girls
voted to sleep in the Wapiti (Roosevelt Elk) cabin, while the boys opted for the
Marbled Murrelet cabin. If you’d like to teach your child favorite campfire songs
from your kidhood, now’s the time! We’ll be gone Wednesday thru Friday, April
25-27.
(8) The Takilma Community Building Grand Re-Opening is April 28! It’s a
big, big “THANK YOU!!” to the community for supporting our school’s expansion
with their money, time, and overall support. We need volunteers! Please sign-up
in the main room.

(9) Dates have been set for the end-of-the-year activities. There will be a
Secondary Class Performance, Elementary Class Performance, Crossover Day,
Elementary & Secondary Class Campout, Open House, Picnic/Graduation. See
the “Save the Date” section on Page 3 for details.

(10) Our Spring Performance will be held during the day, 1-2:30 p.m. on
Wednesday May 9. “Who’s Killing the Coral Reefs??!” Murder Mystery
Performance. It’s an audience-participation play, so prepare to get into the act
with us! More details to come.
(11) If this isn’t enough classroom connection for you, visit our blog! Go to the
