CSE 338 L: Data Communication
& Network Lab
Lab Class 5: Introduction to Cisco
Packet Tracer

Hub:
In computer networking, a hub is a small, simple, inexpensive electronic device that joins
multiple computers together. A hub joins multiple computers (or other network devices)
together to form a single network segment. On this network segment, all computers can
communicate directly with each other.

Host:
A host (network) is a computer or other device connected to a computer network. A
network host may offer information resources, services, and applications to users or
other nodes on the network. A network host is a network node that is assigned a network
address.
All servers are hosts, but not all hosts are servers. Any device that has established a
connection to a network qualifies as a host, whereas only hosts that accept connections
from other devices (clients) qualify as servers.

Switch:
A network switch is a small hardware device that centralizes communications among
multiple connected devices in one local area network (LAN). Stand-alone Ethernet switch
devices were commonly used on home networks many years before home broadband
routers became popular.

Network Switch versus a Router?

Switches create a network. Routers connect networks. A router links computers to the
Internet, so users can share the connection. A router acts as a dispatcher, choosing the
best path for information to travel so it's received quickly.

Coper Cable Connection:

Prepared by Farah Hossain

Use a straight-through cable when:

• Connecting a router to a hub

• Connecting a computer to a switch

• Connecting a LAN port to a switch, hub, or computer

Use a crossover cable when:

• Connecting a computer to a router

• Connecting a computer to a computer

• Connecting a router to a router

• Connecting a switch to a switch

• Connecting a hub to a hub

To specify when we use crossover cable or straight-through cable, we should remember:

Group 1: Router, Host, Server
Group 2: Hub, Switch
One device in group 1 + One device in group 2: use straight-through cable
Two devices in the same group: use crossover cable

Exercise 1: Simple Computer Network

 Step 1: Make the physical connection 

  Step 2: Configure Global Settings 

 Step 3: Configure Ethernet Adapter 

Exercise 2: Simple Network Composed of Hub

 Step 1: Make the physical connection like the below figure. 
Prepared by Farah Hossain

  Step 2: Make Sure the Hub is on 

 Configure the end devices similar to exercise 1 

Exercise 3: Simple Network using Switch

 All steps are Same Just use a switch instead of Hub 

Exercise 4: Using DHCP Server to configure end devices

 Step 1: Make the physical connection like the below figure. 

  Step 2: Select DHCP in the Config > Global option for all the end devices.
  Step 3: Configure DHCP server settings and save it. 
 Step 4: Turn on the DHCP server from the server device. 

Exercise 5: Set up DNS and HTTP Server.

 Step 1: Make the physical connection like the below figure. 

  Step 2: Configure 2 server manually and set up DHCP server 

 Step 3: Setup DNS and HTTP server 

Lab Tasks:
1. Complete all 5 exercise
2. Create a network composed of 5 and configure them using DHCP (Add 3 new end
devices in exercise 5)
3. Add new web server and a domain name according to NSU student name.

Home task:
1. Briefly hand write about all 5 exercise separately.
2. What is router? Write short description of router and its usage.
