Materials:
Compound microscope
Prepared slides of: Hydra, w.m.
Hydra, budding
Hydra, spermaries
Hydra, ovary
Obelia sp.
Preserved soft and hard coral species

Procedure:
I. Body organization of Hydra
1. Observe the prepared slide of Hydra. Take note of its body form. Take note of
the following structures:
 Ectoderm
 Hypostome
 Mouth
 body column
 tentacles (count the number of tentacles)
 nematocyst (if visible)
 pedal disc
2. Draw and label the parts.

II. Reproduction
Members of this phylum may reproduce through asexual and sexual means. Both
can be observed in Hydra.
1. Asexual mode. Examine a prepared slide of Hydra undergoing budding. Locate
the bud. Draw and label.
2. Sexual mode. The gonads of Hydra are temporary structures because they only
occur during mating season during its life cycle.
Draw and label spermaries and ovaries.

III. Obelia sp.

1. Locate the following structures:
 hydrorhiza
 hydrocaulus
 gastrozooid (hydranth)
 gonozooid (gonangium)
 tentacles
IV. Preserved specimens
1. Observe and draw preserved cnidarian specimens. Label the parts. Identify
them, if possible.
2. Classify the specimens observed.
