Safety Points
When erecting, altering and/or dismantling formwork there should be inadequate free fall
distance underneath the working area.
Stripping of formwork for structural elements like cantilever, beams/slabs shall be done only
after mobilization of full restraining forces.
Adequate fire-fighting facilities/fire extinguishers to be fixed in around work space.
Appropriate PPE to be worn at all times.
Work Procedures
Material for Formwork
Propping and Centering: All propping and centering should be either of steel square tubes with
extension pieces.
Centering/Staging
Staging should be as designed with required extension pieces as approved by Engineer-in-
Charge to ensure proper slopes, as design for slabs/beams etc. and as per levels as shown in
drawing. All the staging to be either of Tubular steel structure with adequate bracings.
Centering and shuttering of any upper floor being cast shall be suitably supported on one
floor below the top most floors already cast.
Shuttering
Shuttering used shall be of sufficient stiffness to avoid excessive deflection and joints shall
be tightly buttled to avoid leakage of slurry. If required, rubberized lining/ tape of material
as approved by the Engineer-in-Charge shall be provided in the joints.
The shuttering should also be properly repaired before use and properly cleaned to avoid
stains, honey combing, seepage of slurry through joints etc.
Runner Joists: MS Channel or any other suitable section of the required size shall be used as
runners.
Assembly of beam head over props. Beam head is an adopter that fits snugly on the head
plates of props to provide wider support under beam bottoms.
Form work shall be properly designed for self-weight, weight of reinforcement, weight of
fresh concrete, and in addition, the various live loads likely to be imposed during the
construction process (such as workmen, materials and equipment). In case the height of
centering exceeds 3.50 meters, the prop may be provided in multi-stages.
Camber
Suitable camber shall be provided in horizontal members of structure, especially in
Cantilever spans to counteract the effect of deflection. The form work shall be so assembled
as to provide for camber. The camber for beams and slabs shall be 4 mm per metre (1 to
250) or as directed by the Engineer-in-Charge, so as to offset the subsequent deflection, for
cantilevers the camber at free end shall be 1/50th of the projected length or as directed by
the Engineer-in-Charge.
Surface Treatment
Oiling the Surface: surfaces are coated with suitable mould oil which acts both as a parting
agent and also gives surface protections.
Removal of Formwork
The formwork shall be so removed as not to cause any damage to concrete. Centering shall be
gradually uniformly lowered in such a manner as to permit the concrete to take stresses due to its
own weight uniformly and gradually to avoid any shock or vibration.
Precautions
Where necessary, formwork shall be so arranged that the soffit form, properly supported on
props only can be retained in position for such period as may be required by maturing
conditions.
Close watch shall be maintained to check for settlement of formwork during concreting. Any
settlement of formwork during concreting shall be promptly rectified.
