What is a Teen Activist?
Most teen activists are changing something, either in the world or in their
town. This is done in different ways as well. Some give speeches or preform
foundations. They do this because something is wrong with their lives, or their
environment. They don’t sit back and watch, they take action against the
problems!

Child Labor
Have you ever
thought about child
labor before? It is a
big problem in the
world. There are
over 152 million
kids in the world that are working. In
some places like Eritrea, Somalia, North
Korea, Myanmar, Uzbekistan, and
Afghanistan, among other places, it’s bad.
Unfortunately, in countries like India people
are so poor that they need child labor to
help support the family, but not always.
Child labor is usually mentally(no schooling), physically(bad conditions),
and socially( not interacting with people normally) bad. When the kid is doing
child labor, they would cut time off school, so they could work. Since some of
them would work in harsh conditions, harsh conditions harming them physically.
So in my opinion, child labor is bad.

The Different Types

In this chapter, you will learn about the different types
of child labor. Sadly there are probably more than the ones I
will mention.
There are different types as well. And most of them
are bad. The worst forms of it slavery are, child trafficking,
debt bondage,(paying off the debt by selling
the children to slavery) forced labor, child
soldiers, and treacherous work(such as
mining). The most common form of labor,
71%, is agriculture. This could be, fishing, forestry, and livestock
herding. What makes this labor is that the conditions may be bad or
the children are forced. The absolute most dangerous and bad form
of child labor is when the work is life-threatening like mining. The
‘masters’ make the kids work with mercury. The side effects of
mercury can harm you physically.

Payal Jangid
Teen activists can do good things for others. Even when not a lot of
people are good to them. An activist named Payal Jangid suffered child slavery.
Payal is a teen who is trying to abolish or get rid of, child marriage and child
slavery, now knowing its horror. She is also trying to secure a child's rights.
She is being successful with her mission to eradicate child marriage. By
giving speeches and speaking against her village, Payal has gotten rid of child
marriage. Women don’t need to wear veils in her village, Hinsla. For Payal, this
was a big victory. She is doing great things for her community.

How can you Help?

Since this is so big, how can you help? For starters, you can buy products
that aren’t made by child laborers. If you're not sure, ask an employee, and if
they’re not sure maybe they’ll look into this as well. If you see child labor, you
could report it ( there are laws in
place, they’re just not enforced).
You can also do, or join
organizations against child labor.
An organization is
S.C.R.E.A.M., or, Supporting
Children's Rights through Education,
the Arts, and Media. They are focused on
child labor and, as said in the title, securing
children’s rights and stopping child labor.

Child labor is a problem, and I hope you think so too. And thanks to people
like Payal, the situation is getting better. Thanks to teen activists, different
problems( like poverty, human rights, animal abuse, government and laws etc)
can be solved. Teen activists are being and making the change. They bring a
change to the world, just like Payal and others. What change will you bring to this
world?
