THIS TO CERTIFY THAT THE PROJECT STAGE-I REPORT ON
I am also deeply indebted Prof. Rohmare R. V. and all Professors for extending their
cooperation, support and continuous encouragement throughout the work. I am also thankful to
our principal Prof. Aher M. S. for the inspiration. This work is also the outcome of the blessing
guidance and support of my parents and family members and friends. Lastly, my cordial thanks
to all who have contributed indirectly and materially in words and deeds for completion of this
work.
Heat generated in a process due to combustion of fuel, due to chemical reactions or heat
removed from thermal system by heat exchanger is usually dumped in the environment though it
could still have useful heat potential. This heat, if recovered, may be economically used for some
utilities. Worldwide concerns about environmental pollution, as well as using the adaptable
sources of energy has encouraged research and development for recovering waste heat and
methodically utilizing this energy source for domestic or industrial utilities.
Refrigerator and air conditioner, a common domestic appliance and almost a need of
every house in this era are potentially major sources of generating unwanted heat which can be
recovered by cost effective means using basic heat transfer knowledge. Utilizing the recovered
heat for some other domestic need like water heating can make the system even more
economical. This work aims to identify recoverable heat potential of a 250 liter capacity
domestic refrigerator. Such recovered heat can fulfill hot water requirements of a nuclear family
of four members.
A case study of waste heat recovery from a domestic refrigerator of 250 liter capacity is
presented in this work. Preliminary calculations showed that, without consuming extra electric
power, hot water of about 150 lpd at 55oC can be generated by the recovered heat from such
domestic refrigerator.
