Chapter 1

THE PROBLEM

Introduction

Finding a job is the act of looking for employment due to unemployment, discontent

with the current position, or desire for a better position, (Vilorio, 2011). It is one of the

most exciting parts in life of every graduates or every person who are seeking job. It is a

long way that marks a new direction towards fulfillment and satisfaction of an individual

to their chosen field. But finding a job can also cause stress and disappointment

particularly when you think of the challenges that may be encountered along the way. It

has been observed that many colleges and universities produce graduates who remain

parasites after graduation because they cannot sustain the standard of job qualification

of some companies have who are looking for manpower. It is unfortunate that many

graduates typically have academic and technical skills; they often lack some basic skills,

also referred to as employability, or work readiness skills.

A productive job performance is often confused with the effort that refers to energy

expended. It is the accomplishment of an employee or manager’s assigned duties and

outcomes produced on a specified job function or activity during a specified time period.

An employee is considered as the heart of the company and his/her attitude can affect

the direction of the business. Managing performance is done with the employees because

it gave an advantage to the employees, manager and the organization. It is done in a

collaborative way. Yearly performance evaluation in job satisfaction is one of the most

formative ways to influence morale. It could justify reward decisions such as promotions,

merits and other forms of rewards. This also allows both the supervisors and subordinates

to develop a plan for correcting any deficiencies that appraisal might have reinforce and

the feedback clarifies the employees job expectations held by their specific supervisors.

Performance appraisal helps evaluate the individual share, relative to the team’s

contribution in achieving the organization’s goal.

Employment is one of the factors on how a community or rather a country be a

progressive one. It is how the citizens of a certain country earn money for their family in

order to attain a good living. In exchanged of money they conduct services that are line

up with their finished degree. It is an important part of people’s lives. It means more than

just being paid. It means being able to make your own choices about how you want to

live your life. It will play an important role in the society. A factor that should been focused

by the government. It benefits to both employer and employees, as well as the society.

As today’s generation, employment is hardly to find especially when you do not have a

good background in education, better be a college graduate or at least a high school

graduate. There is more chance if a person who wants to be employed has finished

his/her study in order to perform what is asked by the employer. Readiness in finding an

employment will lessen the difficulties to find a certain job; this helps you more to practice

and to have the determination to be hired without the help of others. It is more like

preparing yourself to this new kind of environment.

This chapter is representation of the related literature and studies pertinent

to the present work, the theoretical and conceptual framework and paradigm.

Related Literature and Studies

The researchers read and research in several books to gathered

information relevant to related literature and studies to supplement the problem

and to have different views of the authors about employment readiness.

According to Obrero, Odavar, Morada (2015) from their study entitled

Readiness of Graduating BSOA student of CSPC in finding a job, must propose a

departmental organization that will conduct seminars and workshop regarding the

field specialization especially in job seeking and employment readiness. Such also

encourage and motivate them to give their best in improving their skills in the labor

market.

Cepe, Japson, Penones (2017) form their study entitled Career

Preparedness of BSOA Graduating students of CSPC, that in order to be prepared

in choosing career they need to take and passed the civil service exam and have

regular seminars, trainings, and workshop to be attended.

Holloway, et. al. (2010) Regardless, of whether you are working full

time, part time or casually, it is essential to reflect upon your skill level. Upgrading

your work skills and knowledge assist in maintaining a good quality resume. It is

important to continually reflect on your performance in order to maintain and

improve your work standards. Whenever learning opportunities arise, it is useful to

take advantage of them as they will enable you to meet potential learning needs

and full career aspiration.

Dublin (2015), the key of insight under pinning this proposal is the context

of the workplace is quite different from the formal learning in which professional

knowledge, skills and competence are acquired. The 21 st century graduates

should be supported in their transition to the world of work by being equipped with

the resources to assimilate the activities of their host rapidly, to assess how their

particular role is situated, supplied, & constrained, and its associated expectations,

risks & consequences. The term “workplace” defies definition other than in the

most general term e.g.., being engaged in an activity, not necessarily dependent

on time or place.

Ashford, Lecroy and Williams (2018) states that adolescents who are

involved in some work derive benefits that may encourage responsibility and

autonomy and may provide important new opportunity in the future.

Embestro, Nilayan, Soltes (2013) from their study entitled The

Employability of Graduates in BSOA and BSFSM as perceived by senior students,

that since their chosen jobs are in line with their degree or profession, the school

should tie up with other industries and offices to improve the employability of the

students during their on-the-job training which has a great role in developing

students as a productive individuals.

According to Thorndike cited by Labadia (2010), started the process of

defining work performance by articulating the ultimate criterion. This ultimate

criterion is a specification of everything that defines work success across the full

domain of specific job. He further explains that the ultimate criterion is conceptual

in nature cannot be measured.

Atian, Placides, Prades (2016) from their study entitled Job Prospect of

Graduating student in Office Administration in CSPC, Nabua. Cam. Sur. The

respondents must devote their time and effort in finding job after graduation so that

they become easily employed.

According to Griffin and Moorhead (2012), stated that “motivation” is a set

of forces that causes people to engage in one’s behavior rather than some

alternative behavior”. The objective of each company is to motivate it’s employees

to perform in different ways that will lead to the company’s productivity.

Folkman (2013), good decision making in a short period of time is a

necessity in the organization. Updating the employees, regardless of demographic

factors can be appreciated by the employees due to the organization’s move in

taking care of their employees.

Beebe, Beebe and Ivy (2013) Regardless of your specific job description,

the essence of what you do when working at any job is to communicate; you talk,

listen, relate, read, and write whatever you job title. People who communicate

effectively with others are in high demand.

DCU, (2012) the term “graduateness” is beginning to be used, nationally

and internationally to describe a range of competences though to match the

demands of the modern workplace. Work is underway to identify what precisely

these outcomes are and how curricula can be fine-tuned to achieve them and will

mature over the next years.

Slack, Chambers, & Johnston (2010), states that job design is the process

of deciding on the contents of a job in terms of its duties and responsibilities, on

the methods to be used in carrying out the job, in terms of techniques, system and

procedures and on the relationships that should exist between the worker and his

superior subordinates and colleagues.

Keogh, Maguire, O’ Donoghue(2012) they reflect the dynamic

environment in which the individual worker is require to operate the practical

observation that the process of the work, while comprising the an eponymous

“principal activity” tends to feature the multiple interactions with other activities that

may be characterized by different rules, culture, agenda, expectation, motivation

and stated object.

Based from the reviewed literature and studies, the researchers found out that they

are closely related or similar to the study of the Employment Readiness of BSEM student.

The studies of Obrero et.al (2015) and Cepe et.al (2017) was related to the

present study in the sense of proposing of departmental organizations that will conduct

seminars and workshop and taking & passing civil service examination that will encourage

and help them in finding a stable job. Eligibility and seminars/training attended is a great

help of getting hired in the company you have applied.

The studies of Holloway et.al (2010), Dublin (2015) and Beebe et.al (2013) was

related to the present study in the sense of skill level and knowledge that is required in

finding a job. The communication and other skills are one of the factors in order to get a

The studies of DCU (2012), Slack et.al (2010) and Keogh et.al (2012) was related

to the present study in the sense of work environment, place and the job design you want

to cope with or work with. It is said that the place / environment you will work with has an

impact on what job you were comfortable with.

Research Gap

From the readings of researchers from different libraries, it was found out that there

is a related study on the Employment Readiness of Bachelor of Science in

Entrepreneurial Management of CSPC. Hence, the difference of the research was on

their scope of study.

Theoretical Framework

This study is anchored on the KASH theory introduced by Manjula Herath (2014)

shown in figure 1. The purpose of this is to show that more often than not poor

performance is not just an issue of knowledge and skills, but also includes poor attitudes

and habits. Yet, individuals spend most of their resources developing knowledge and

skills yet fail to develop the necessary attitudes and habits for success.

THEORETICAL PARADIGM

The first link shows the KNOWLEDGE. Knowledge is what you know and is sum

total of learning-theoretical and practical- than an individual acquires over a period of time.

Knowledge of the subject, environment, general matter, form the building blocks for the

ability to understand, internalize and deliver on the performance objectives. Knowledge

however is highly overrated. In this study, it is the result or product of having information

or understanding through skills, experiences and ability need by the Bachelor of Science

in Entrepreneurial Management students.

The next link shows the ATTITUDE. Attitude isn’t about “good” or “bad, but it

describes your outlook and perspective on how you think. Thoughts drive actions. Actions

drive results. While knowledge and skills are important, the ability to put them to use is

defined by the attitude of the BSEM students who possess them. The attitude that a

BSEM student develops that will help them in leveraging their knowledge and skills to

perform in the work place.

In the third link which show the SKILLS. Skills are those capabilities and

competencies that are gained through experience and learnt through records keeping,

bookkeeping, customer relations and sales & marketing are some such skills that will help

the BSEM students in their communication and delivery of performance.

The last link, this shows the HABITS. Habits are those aspects of our behavior

that reflect what we do repeatedly and believe deep within and is what truly defines our

capability to perform. Successful organizations want winning to be their habit. Success is

a product of doing the right and desirable things repeatedly. This happens when the

students are habituated to work hard, work smart, work systematically and perform

consistently in the job they preferred.

Questionnaire

Questionnaire is an effective way of quantifying data from a sample group. It is also the

most common tool used to gather data. The researchers used self- made questionnaire to

collect all the information that helped in realizing the study such as unstructured interview and

questionnaire.

Preparation of the Questionnaire

In preparing the questionnaire, the researchers reviewed some literature and

studies, which have some learning on the chosen research problem. The draft of the

questionnaire was submitted to the adviser for comments and suggestions. The

researchers prepared a questionnaire, composed of four parts. Part 1 is consisting the

profile of the respondents; Part 2 is the level of measures of the BSEM students; Part 3

are the readiness in finding a job; and the Part 4 is the proposed recommendations to

enhance the readiness of BSEM students in finding a job.

Validation of the Questionnaire

a dry-run was conducted to determine whether the prepared questionnaires are

appropriate in this study. The questionnaire for dry-run was given to the selected students

in BSEM in other schools.

Administration and Retrieval of the Questionnaire

after the finalization of the questionnaires of the researcher sought first the permit

of Dean of CME Department. The researchers also asked permission from the instructors

of the students to let them used their time to conduct the examination to the students.

Then, the researchers personally distributed the questionnaire and likewise retrieved the

accomplish forms. The researchers explained to the respondents about the purpose of

their study and why they want to cooperate and answers the examination seriously.

Unfortunately, 100 percent of the respondents cooperate and answered the questions

properly and orderly.

Documentary Analysis

A copy of list of officially enrolled Bachelor of Science in Entrepreneurial

Management students was requested by the researchers from the office of the Dean of

College of Management and Entrepreneurship which contributed as the source in

distributing the questionnaire.

Informal Interview

Another gathering tool that used was the interview. It was used to supplement the

data gathered through the questionnaire. Unstructured interview is a conversation

between the researchers and the respondents. The questions asked were based on the

questionnaire for purpose of consistency of information.
