CHAPTER 1: INTRODUCTION
In this chapter, it presents the reasons and objectives of the study, and it describes the
situation, boundaries, and severity of the problem.

BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

Students are the future generation who will contribute an important role to the business
industry. Since we all know that the goal of the On-the-Job Training is to give instructions and
practice opportunity to the inexperienced learner. Hence, in this research, we will be given the
opportunity to study and outlines the benefits of the On-the-Job Training as implemented to the
4th year BSOA students of SMMC for their career growth.
A great writer, Julius Caesar said that “Experience is the teacher of all things." There is
no other best teaching practice than experience because a person can gain knowledge through it.
Experience helps everyone to develop our strengths and skills.
Based on Valamis.com 2021, The On-the-Job Training was defined as a practical
approach to acquire new competencies and skills that are needed for a job in a real, or close to
real, working environment. It is often used to learn how to use tools or equipment in a live-work
practice, simulated, or training environment.
According to research.com by Imed Bouchrika 2021, Internship was defined as a form of
On-the-Job Training for college students who want to gain real-world expertise to enhance
knowledge acquired in the classroom. This is a short-term work experience either paid or unpaid,
which helps students gain practical and technical skills in their industry.
According to Imed Bouchrika 2021, OJT as a training program for students, is designed
to immerse learners in work environments that is relevant to their area of study to learn
knowledge on, productivity in, and respect for the workplace.
According to Galloway, Marks, and Chillas, 2014; Holyoak, 2013 and Maertz, Stoeberl,
& Marks, 2014 they explained that Internships enable students to acquire skills, which cannot be
learned in the classroom environment, while the employers obtain access to low-cost labor and
reduced recruitment costs.
This helps the student to apply the ideas, theories, principles, and lessons, and other
information that they learned from school and share this knowledge in the workplace. This also
make them to level up their knowledge, skills, and attitude towards work.

8
THEORETICAL FRAMEWORK

In relation to the study of Bandura in 1977, and extended by Lave and Wenger, 1991.
Social learning theory is a cognitive process that is set on the notion of changes in beliefs,
concepts and knowledge and improves professional and personal learning process through
participation in real work environment.
According to the study of Brenton Faber, 2002, Aviva Freedman and Christine
Adam,1996, and Tiffany Bourelle, 2014, for instance, each focus on how the internship is an
opportunity for students to see themselves as “professionals” on the job. In addition to the study,
Savage and Seible, 2010, added that the professional internship is “an aspect of professional
certification that prevails in one form or another across most professions.”
As claimed Mihail in 2006, it was acclaimed that interns have successfully developed
their personal skills, particularly relating to information technology (IT), time management,
communication skills, teamwork, specialist knowledge, and ability to prioritize tasks. Moreover,
according to Knechel and Snowball, 1987, initiated that the internship has successfully
developed the interns' understanding in their areas of study.
Based on the study of Jennifer Bay, according to Lave and Wenger, 1991, learning is
situated in a community of practice. A trainee enters a community of practice as a newcomer and
is initiated, so to speak, "Legitimate Peripheral Participation" introduces newcomers through
immersion in the community and absorbing its modes of action and meaning.
According to Furco, 1996, Lam and Ching, 2007, they defined Internship that have been
viewed by different researchers as offering a diversity of benefits to the student intern. They
engage the intern in service activities primarily for the purpose of providing them with hands-on
experience that enhances their learning and understanding of issues relevant to a particular area
of study. They assist the trainee to bridge the gap between the academic learning process and the
practical reality.
In a study by Nevett,1985, studies showed that students argued that attachments bridged
the gap between the theory of the classroom and the world of practice. In addition to that,
according to Mihail, 2006, added that Internship programs are perceived as a valuable way to
acquire broad competencies where the practical knowledge obtained supports and complements
the theoretical studies learned in the classrooms. Also, according to Knechel and Snowball,
1987, internship attachments were found to enhance students' performance in their courses.

CHAPTER 2: REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE AND STUDIES

This chapter contains some content that will reinforce this study. These are the collected
Literature and Studies which are in addition to the knowledge of the readers.

15
REVIEW ON RELATED LITERATURE

As per Abeysekera, 2006 et al., They claimed that Internships are important activities that
will help the student to prepare to work professionally when they are in school. In addition,
Internship has learning objectives that will encourage them and enhances student skills in
compliance with their chosen fields. Also, this activity is a complement to the education of an
undergraduate because they get a perspective on the world of business.
According to Lee and Chao (2013), the satisfaction from the internship experiences
perceived by students can be a significant input to help them improve their curricula. Also,
students’ perspectives may provide information to ease graduates access to the labor market.
Based on Armstrong (2001), defined the training as a formal and systematic behavior
through learning that occurs because of education, instruction, and development and planned
experience.
As said by Levine (1997), stated that on the job training is about 'two people working
closely together so that one person can learn from the other.

As per Campbell (1990), considers on the job training as an employee's normal work
situation, as being designed to change the knowledge, attitude, and behavioral patterns directly
appropriate to the performance of a given task or job.
According to Blandchard and Thacker (1999), Supervisor of the team will prepare a step-
by-step job breakdown by observing an experienced worker performing the job.

According to Tas, 1988; LeBruto and Murray, 1994, The students who undergone an
internship were able to develop their competencies in several management areas such as
leadership, human resource management, oral and written communication, interpersonal
communication, problem-solving, teamwork, planning and decision-making.

REVIEW ON RELATED STUDIES

In relation to the study of Anjum (2020), business students use their skills and theoretical
business knowledge in their first jobs by integrating conceptual knowledge and training through
academic internship programs, students can be facilitated to better implement their concepts at
the workplace.
According to Gault, Leach, and Duey (2010), academic internships are a bridge to link
the theory and practice by taking part in supervised and scheduled work. These internship
programs not only improve students’ personal skills but also polish their professional growth and

16
experience. Today, educational institutes, students and business recruiters are aware of the
importance of internship programs because it makes opportunities for educational institutes to
upgrade the student’s enrollment and prepare their curriculum. For students, internships are
experience of practical work which enables students to get training during their course programs
and save companies’ supervision and training costs by providing them trained employees.

According to Ronnestad and Skovholts (1993), they stated that practicality of knowledge
depends upon what students already know and how they associate their information, knowledge,
and skills with the situations they face in the real world of the work or in an organization.

As believed by Harrison and Kennedy (1996), an internship program can be made

successful for students through proper recognition of internship plans and relevant industry
participants, picking out motivational student interns, internship program evaluation, monitoring,
and feedback. They also identified that educational institutes and academic advisors should play
a vital role in the implementation of an internship program.

In accordance with Lubbers, 2001; Swift and Kent, 1999; Cook, 2004, Hymon-Parker,
1998; and Beard and Morton,1999, Further benefits include improvements in career-related
direction, gaining practical experience, improved marketability of graduates, interpersonal skills,
and understanding of the theories of classroom learning.

SYNTHESIS

Undergoing Internship is very important that will help the students to prepare their selves
to work professionally and through internships experiences, it may improve students’ curricula.
(Abeysekera, 2019; Lee & Chao, 2013). Training is a formal and systematic behavior, learning
happens because of educations, instructions, development, and planned training and by working
closely together, the student will be learned how to do a job step by step from supervisors
through observations and performed the specific tasks and through that it helps the students to
develop their competencies like leaderships, oral and written communications and many more.
(Armstrong, 2001; Levine, 1997; Campbell, 1990; Blanchard and Thacker, 1999; Tas, 1988;
LeBruto & Murray, 1994). This Study aims that business students use their skills and knowledge
from academic internships program for their first jobs (Anjum, 2020) because internships
programs are not only to improve students' skills but also to improve their personal growth and
experiences (Gault, Leach, and Duey, 2010). Internship program will be implemented and
effective if they have a proper recognition of internship plans and relevant industry participants,
picking out motivational student interns, internship program evaluation, monitoring, feedback
and also instructors and educational institutes has vital role in implementation of the program.
(Harrison and Kennedy, 1996). Internships has a lot of benefits included improvements in career-
related direction, gaining practical experience, improved marketability of graduates,
interpersonal skills, and understanding of the theories of classroom learning (Lubbers, 2001;

17
Swift and Kent, 1999; Cook, 2004, Hymon-Parker, 1998; and Beard and Morton,1999).
Practicality of knowledge depends upon what students already know and how they use their
information, knowledge, and skills in real world of work. (Ronnestad and Skovholts, 1993).

CHAPTER 3: RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODOLOGY

This chapter presents the research methodology, source of the data, initiatives of how
they were gathered, design, and statistical application of this research.

18
METHOD OF RESEARCH USED

This research study used Descriptive-Quantitative Research in which a questionnaire or

survey was used by the researchers to gather information and data on selected SMMC students.
Based on information by Valdez, 2019, Descriptive Research Analyzes in research
descriptions the current practice, standards, and status. It provides an answer to the who, what,
when, and how questions that relate to the subject of the study. It cannot answer the “why”
question because it only describes the specific and present condition of the event and not the past
or future.

SOURCES OF DATA

In this study, the 4th year students of Bachelor of Science in Office Administration
studying in SMMC are the respondents of this study, they are the one who serve as our sources
of data and is responsible for answering this kind of research study. By conducting this study,
we will be able to know what their perspectives are regarding the benefits of On-The-Job
training for their Career growth. Therefore, all of us will surely benefit from this study.

DATA GATHERING PROCEDURE

The researchers took steps to properly conduct the study and. First, the researchers sought
permission using a letter to the school administration of San Mateo Municipal College. Second,
the researchers sent a google -form questionnaire to the participants who would answer the
overall discussion of the research. Third, the researchers waited for the participants to finish
answering the questionnaires. Lastly, after conducting the survey, the researchers will conduct
tabulation on the result and answers of the participant’s research using excel in Microsoft.

LOCATION OF THE STUDY

19
This study was conducted at San Mateo Municipal College which is a college school
located in Gen. Luna St. Guitnang Bayan I San Mateo, Rizal. It was founded in October 2004
under the name of former Mayor Peping Diaz. It started with the help of Dean Narciso Quesada
who served as President at the time, Mr. Ramon Epetia as school administrator, Mr. Augusto
Quesada as school registrar, and Mr. Jojo Bonifacio as officer. At first there were 40 students
and 12 professors. In fact, PBSM has 2 bedrooms, the 203 and 204. Due to the on-going
construction of the municipality, the Police Department has an office in the same building for
almost 4 months from November to February 2005 until it is relocated in its main office.
Through Career Talk, initiated by the leadership of the school administrator, Mr. Ramon Epetia
and the former president, Dean Narciso Quesada at various high schools in San Mateo, the
number of students has greatly increased from 40 to 266 in 2005 and now in the year 2022, the
number of students is increasing even more.

20
DATA GATHERING INSTRUMENT

Survey Questionnaire is a data gathering technique that makes you obtain facts and
information about the subject or object of research through the data gathering instrument of
interview and questionnaire. The researchers used questionnaires for the respondent, and it is
applicable for the researcher’s topic and researchers think that it is easy to conduct survey than to
observe and interview.
Questionnaires were used by the researchers to help develop and refine this research.
Questionnaires were given to fifty (50) respondents aged from twenty-two to thirty (22-30) years
old who were 4th year BSOA students in SMMC.
The survey's purpose is to find out the benefits that On-the-Job Training has provided to
the 4th year BSOA students of SMMC in their career growth. The survey was answered by the
respondents based on their experience, knowledge, and thoughts. After that, the researchers
gathered the collected data.

21
STATISTICAL TREATMENT OF DATA

Each answer of the respondents was well studied by the researchers so that it could be
given a clear interpretation and better understand the data gathered. The researchers used a
statistical formula in this study.
f
%= x 100
n

Wherein: % = percentage
f = number of responses to the option
n = total number of answers to a question
100 = constant
f ( a . w)
w . a=
n
Wherein: w.a = weighted average/mean
f = number of answers
a.w = assigned weight
n = total number of respondents

The following are interpretations used by the researchers.

4 – Strongly Agree (SA)

3 – Agree (A)
2 – Disagree (D)
1 – Strongly Disagree (SD)

CHAPTER 4: PRESENTATION, ANALYSIS, AND INTERPRETATION OF DATA

22
This chapter contains detailed presentation and discussion of data analysis and the results
of this study.

RESULTS OF THE STUDY

This chapter reviews the results and analysis of the quantitative data, also the compilation
of the questionnaire, and the results and analysis of the quantitative findings of the study. During
the conceptual phase of this study, quantitative data was collected. The first step involved
distributing google forms as a survey questionnaire to the respondents. The second step, the data
was collected after the respondents responded to the survey. Third step the researcher made the
interpretation of the data and presentation.

CONCLUSIONS

On-the-Job Training is extremely important and beneficial for students since it broadens
their knowledge and allows Office Administration students to practice their abilities in a real-
world setting. This provides a source of workforce for businesses by having a privilege on hiring
students who are fresh-minded, intellectually updated, goal-oriented, and do not anticipate high
pay. The trainees can put their formal education courses into practice and discover that there is
still a lot more to learn in the actual working field.
With these observations, we, the researchers, presented that the On-the-Job Training is
relevant and has given benefits for the career growth of all 4th year BSOA students at San Mateo
Municipal College (SMMC).

1. This study discovered that the perceptions of the students regarding the implementation,
benefits, and effectiveness of the On-the-Job Training are positive.

2. This study found out that On-the-Job Training has impacts to the skill development in
terms of personal skill, and technical skill.

3. This study found out that On-the-Job Training is beneficial to the skill development,
education, and career growth of the students.

35
4. The On-the-Job Training that was implemented is relevant and beneficial to the career
growth of 4th year BSOA students of SMMC.
RECOMMENDATIONS

After a thorough study considering the previous findings, and conclusion of the study, the
following recommendations are presented:

1. The school president, educators, and school administration may continually strive on
providing more better lessons and experiences for students as they do a commendable
job. They should give value and importance to each student. Attention should be paid to
the strengths and weaknesses of each student in different aspects of learning. As a result,
they can focus on their shortcomings and develop their skill even more. OJT is beneficial,
a good experience, and lesson for them to further improve their skills and be better
prepared for their future career. Mentors should get feedback from the students if the
training met their needs. Therefore, it is proposed to further expand the practice of OJT
among BSOA 4th year students at San Mateo Municipal College, and further expand and
strengthen the connection or partnership of the school with various companies to provide
a greater experience to students.

2. The students should focus on paying attention to any of their weaknesses, and their OJT
learnings and developed skills should be preserved, and further expanded. Since OJT
provides benefits to every intern, they should not waste it and they should continue it to
practice and be even better prepared for their future career path.

3. The work environment or companies must be supportive and comfortable for the
students. Mentors should allow the students to do the work on their own but not leaving
them alone. Establish a structured plan. Create a task and detail the rules or policies
interns should know.
