The K to 12 Program covers Kindergarten and 12 years of basic education (six

years of primary education, four years of Junior High School, and two years of
Senior High School [SHS]) to provide sufficient time for mastery of concepts and
skills, develop lifelong learners, and prepare graduates for tertiary education,
middle-level skills development, employment, and entrepreneurship.

ARTS AND DESIGN

Among the four tracks offered in senior high school, Arts and Design track is the path that will lead you
to the creative field right after you graduate. Once you’ve chosen the arts and design track, you must
know the core subjects. You must be willing to take effort in absorbing skills and knowledge needed to
fuel your ride. People should stop viewing the arts and design track as just an option to create leisure
and hobby. Arts and design track career options vary in forms and could take you to greater heights;
however, you must know what type of edge you want to master and how you can grow professionally.

As the Philippines continues to implement the added years in our learning system, more people need to
believe that it prepares a student to become professional and work ready holistically. The key purpose
of arts and design track is to produce creative job-ready professionals who want to join the workforce
and leave a substantial impact. What’s good about the curriculum is its structure to expose you to the
different areas of the creative field. We are talking about multimedia forms such as industrial and
interior design, architecture, animation, photography, film, performing arts and a lot more.

ACADEMIC

One of the significant features of the K to 12 system is the integration of specialized tracks designed to
help students in determining their respective career paths. These four tracks—academic, technical-
vocational, sports, and arts and design—are aimed at enhancing a student’s ability based on what he
wants to do after graduation.

The technical-vocational, sports, and arts and design tracks will allow students to join the workforce
immediately upon graduation while the academic track prepares students for further studies.

The academic track consists of courses that will make college life easier to adjust to in terms of subject
variety and, to a certain degree, difficulty. This does not mean, however, that if you take the other
tracks, you cannot go to college. If a student chose the arts and design track, for instance, nothing is
stopping him from taking up Fine Arts or Interior Design in college instead of working right away. It
would still depend on the student. The academic track is simply the track that prepares students for the
most common college courses such as business management, engineering, and the sciences.
Upon choosing the academic track, students can choose from four different strands: General Academic;
Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics; Accountancy, Business, and Management; and
Humanities and Social Sciences. Students may choose their strand in the same way that they decide a
course in college. Aside from the 15 core subjects, these strands will add 16 subjects composed of
different contextualized and specialized subjects based on the track and strand that will be spread out in
grades 11 and 12.

The academic track is the most familiar one because students usually apply to colleges upon graduation
from high school. The only difference is that the subjects are now highly specific and specialized. These
are but some of the changes brought about by the K to 12 system.

SPORTS

As part of the tracks offered in Senior High School under the K-12 Basic Education Curriculum,
the Sports Track aims to give students an understanding of the basic techniques and principles
related to physical education and recreation. In this program, you will be exposed to various
concepts such as the social, psychological, and cognitive development in sports leadership and
management. October 8, 2018 Karl Nicole Nucum

TVL

TVL-HE is designed to develop students’ skills useful for livelihood projects at home. It provides a
curriculum that is a combination of core courses required for all SHS strands and specialized hands-on
courses that meet the standard hour requirement and competency-based assessment of TESDA.
Students in this strand undergo TESDA assessment for National Certifications (NCs) that increase their
employability after graduation from SHS. They can also take degree courses in college especially those
which are related to business, entrepreneurship, culinary arts, hospitality and tourism management,
nutrition, food technology, food management, fashion management, and interior design.

TVL-HE offers three specializations: Bread and Pastry Production, Food and Beverages Service, and
Housekeeping.

STRAND SHAMING
Nowadays, students have experienced different types of bullyinh or shaming inside the school and of
the most common among those, is the "Strand Shaming" wherein a student can be bullied or shamed
because of the strand they had chosen. It also involves their skills and talents that were usually labeled
as "cheap","basic', and etc. And lastly, it also discriminate their future career jobs and careers wherein
they were labeled as "taga luto lang", "psychologist lang", "babagsak sa pagiging construction worker",
"taga lako lang ng paninda" and other embarrasing statements.

As part of today's generation, we should end this kind of discrimination and start giving importance to
each other's skills and talents as well as their plans for their future because there's no dream should be
humiliated and belittle for it might change one's life forever.

CAUSES OF STRAND SHAMING

Each strands have their own specialized subjects, while still having core subjects that are common to all.
For example, STEM have Pre and Basic Calculus as well as General Physics, Chemistry, and Biology as
their specialized subjects, while HUMSS have Creative Writing, Philippine Politics and Governance, and
Disciplines and Ideas in the Social Sciences.

Due to the absence of “hardcore” Math and Science subjects in their strand, some of the STEM students
smart-shame HUMSS students. This issue then caused a series of trashtalking between those who
belong on the given groups and even tried to tag other tracks that, they say, are comparatively “weaker”
than theirs which only added fuel to the fire. Of course, it is just natural for them to defend their side
and find weak spots on their opponents’. This war didn’t even benefit any of the sides, but rather
causing gap or wall dividing these 2 factions.

EFFECTS OF STRAND SHAMING

The diverseness in academic strand and differences of subjects among the senior high school students,
the assumptions that one strand is harder than another and the envy and boastfulness between
students are some of the primary causes of strand shaming among HUMSS students. Furthermore, low
self esteem and poor academic performance would be the prominent effects of strand shaming among
senior high school students. However in terms of behavior, a student who experienced shaming or
humiliation could have negative behavior towards other people. Those offensive and degrading words,
student are being discourage in their studies which may eventually lead low self esteem and poor
academic performance.
