Question # 1
Consider the single line diagram of a 3-bus power system, as shown in Figure 1. The system’s parameters are
listed in Table 1.

a) Design a protection scheme for the generator. (5×5=25)

i. For phase and ground faults.
ii. For inter turn faults.
iii. Determine the reactance of generator in ohms.
iv. Determine the reactance (X) of generator in per unit. when the generator is connected to a power
system, where the bases of power system are 50 MVA, 66 kV.
v. Convert the per unit answer calculated in part (iv) to ohms. Does it match the answer of part (iii).
b) Construct a primary protection scheme for T/F 1. (10×2=20)
i. What is the minimum recommended percentage bias.
ii. Find the value of resistance, if the Y side of the T/F 1 is grounded through resistor, where the
bases of power system are 50 MVA, 66 kV. (Hint: I p.u. = V p.u./ 3R p.u.+ X p.u.)
c) Design the protection schemes for busbars. (5+5+5×6=40)
i. If the busbar 1 having 2 incoming and 1 outgoing feeders. decide the CT ratios based on maximum
primary current of the feeders.
ii. Repeat above part by considering the primary CT current of that feeder which carries the
maximum current.
iii. For high impedance busbar differential scheme, suppose that busbar 2 having 2 incoming and 3
outgoing feeders having 700 A maximum full load current in one line. The secondary resistance
of CT, resistance of lead wire, relay resistance, CT magnetizing current, voltage setting, CT
secondary current are 0.2 Ω, 0.5 Ω, 0.3 Ω, 0.2 mA/V, 90 V, and 5 A, respectively. Determine
1) the value of maximum through fault current for which the scheme will remain stable.

2) If the switchgear capacity is 2100 MVA then the answer of part (1) is commensurate with
the switchgear capacity.
3) Minimum internal fault current.
4) The setting for detecting minimum internal fault current of 700 A.
5) Stabilizing resistance
6) Setting of the supervisory relay if the CT carrying a current of 40 A before break in the
pilot wire.
d) Assume that there are two parallel feeders between T/F 2 and bus 3. Formulate the protection scheme
in a way that the energy is supplied to the consumer in case that one of the feeders is under fault
condition. (15)
