(Creating useful media messages)
How can you say that you are a media literate individual?
You can analyze and evaluate the logical connection between ideas. (You are
assigned to report a certain topic so as a media literate individual, you are going to
retrieve information using computer, download a related video for the report and
use it alongside your PowerPoint presentation)
You can understand the complex messages from different forms of media.
You can understand the significant role of media in our society and how largely it
influences its users. (You can discern what information is factual, truthful and
objective through critical thinking).
You can think independently and make your own opinion instead of relying on
what the media dictates.
“Being media savvy does not mean you are media literate.”
– Frank W. Baker
Media Literacy is not media bashing; the goal is not to ridicule the media. Media are
dominant forces of our culture and an integral part of your life as students. Media should be
evaluated fairly, not judge.
Media Literacy is also no magic potion; it will not instantly solve all of society’s problems.
But it is an effective armor for resisting manipulation and keeping an intelligent view on the
images and messages that are a part of media and youth culture.
As you practice, media literacy skills at home, remember that the heart of media literacy lies
in the child-parent discussions.
