4. MATERIAL
Ferro-magnetic material specification or equivalent.

5. EQUIPMENT
 Y6 AC Yoke or equivalent.
 Light meter
 4.5Kg (10lbs) weight block for AC yoke
 Field Indicator/ Flexible laminated strips (Burma Castrol Type I)

6. CONSUMABLES
 Chemetall S-72, S-76, S-85 Cleaner Remover.
 Chemetall WCP 712 white contrast paint.
 Chemetall 4 Black magnetic ink.
 Or, equivalent of above or approved by COMPANY.

7. MAGNETIC FIELD DIRECTION VERIFICATION

Using Burmah Castrol magnetic flux indicators Type 1 - to determine the direction and adequacy of
magnetic field.

8. LIFTING POWER TEST

The lifting power of all yokes shall be checked daily prior to use (attachment 2).
The alternating current electromagnetic Y6 yoke shall have the lifting power of at least 10 lbs. or 4.5
Kg at the maximum pole spacing.

9. SURFACE CONDITION
The surface to be examined all adjacent areas shall be dry, clean and free from spatter, scale, flux,
grease, oil, paint or any other matter that will interfere with proper inspection.

10. TESTING TEMPERATURE

Surface temperature of the part under examination shall be within 0˚C to 55˚C for WCP and 0˚C to
75˚C for 4 Black (as per manufacture data sheet).
Particles shall be used within the temperature range limitations set by the manufacturer of the
particles. Alternatively, particles may be used outside the particle manufacturer’s recommendations
providing the procedure is qualified at the proposed temperature.

11. SEQUENCE OF OPERATION

 Field strength check shall be carried out using a Burmah Castrol Strip prior to commencement
of each working shift. Three lines should be clearly visible to indicate satisfactory field strength
 Pre-inspection cleaning by mechanical brushes and mechanical buff followed by application
of pre- cleaner Chemetall S-72, S-76, S-85 if required.
 White contrast paint will be evenly sprayed onto the area of inspection.
 The flow of magnetizing current should then be initiated on the part prior to the application of
wet magnetic particle ink.
 The magnetic field will be applied by utilizing a Y6 AC yoke.
 The magnetic field is terminated only after the application of magnetic ink and interpretation is
completed.
 Repeat the examination in the same area by placing the yoke at 90˚ to the initial examination
position.

12. EXAMINATION AND INTERPRETATION

The material surface shall be examined under appropriate viewing condition build-up of indication
is observed as the particles are being applied. The area of examination shall include adjacent area
within at least 25mm (1 In.)

13. ILLUMINATION
Background light or artificial white light (torchlight for shaded/darkened areas) intensity shall be
minimum 100 fc (1076 Lx). The light intensity shall be checked with calibrated light meter and
require to be demonstrated when artificial light is applied, documented and maintained on file.

14. ACCEPTANCE CRITERIA

 ASME Section VIII Division 1, Appendix 6

15. PERSONNEL QUALIFICATION

Personnel conducting the MPI on structural shall be certified as a minimum to:

• SNT-TC-1A Level 2 (externally certified)

• Other certification scheme as accepted and approved by Company
