HOMEWORK 2
Due 08.03.2019, 10.40
Problem No: 1 a) Sketch the P-T diagram for water by indicating the values of triple point
and critical point temperature and pressure on the axes.

b) Sketch the position of the following states on the same diagram and on a T-V diagram,
and indicate the states (superheated vapor, subcooled/compressed liquid, saturated two
phase mixture, etc.)
1. T= 260 °C, 𝑉̂ = 0.001276 m3/kg
2. T= 105 °C, P= 70 kPa
3. T= 105 °C, P= 0.15 MPa
4. T= 40 °C, 𝑉̂ = 19.52 m3/kg
5. T=150 °C, 𝑉̂ = 0.2 m3/kg
c) For b)5., what is the Pressure? What is the quality of steam?

Problem No: 2 Consider a piston (frictionless)- cylinder assembly containing 10 kg of

water vapor initially held at a pressure of 20 bar and occupies a volume of 1.04 m3. The system
undergoes a reversible process in which it is compressed to 100 bar. The pressure-volume
relationship during this process is given by:
𝑃𝑉̂ 1.5 = 𝑐𝑜𝑛𝑠𝑡𝑎𝑛𝑡
a) What is the specific volume (in m3/kg) of the vapor at the initial conditions?
b) What is the temperature of the vapor at the initial conditions?
c) At the initial conditions, water is ………superheated vapor/ saturated steam
d) What is the final specific volume (in m3/kg) of the vapor if it obeys the given
relationship?
e) What is the final volume (in m3) of the vapor?
f) What is the temperature of the vapor at the final conditions?
g) Calculate the work done (in kJ) during this process.

Problem No: 3 As a result of a chemical spill, benzene is evaporating at a rate of 1 gram

per minute into a room that is 6 m* 6 m* 3 m in size and has a ventilation rate of 10 m3/ min.

a. Compute the steady state concentration of benzene in the room

b. Assuming the air in the room is initially free of benzene, compute the time necessary for
benzene to reach 95 percent of the steady-state concentration.
Problem No: 4 A vertical cylinder fitted with a piston contains 0.02 m3 of wet steam at
180 °C and 90% quality. The piston is initially held in place by a pin. The piston has a mass of
100 kg and a cross-sectional area of 49 cm2. The ambient pressure is 100 kPa. The pin is
removed, allowing the piston to move. After a sufficient amount of time, the system comes to
equilibrium with the final temperature being 180 °C.

a) Determine the final pressure and volume of the steam

b) Calculate the work done by the steam during this process.
