METHOD STATEMENTS
This Method Statement describes the management arrangements and systems of work to
be adopted by JR GODDARD CONTRACTING (the Company) during civil engineering
and groundwork operations at various Projects. The document, with its appended risk
assessment, will suffice for the majority of works undertaken by the Company on the
projects and where required alterations or additions for certain operations will be done
and approval sought before implementation. Where additions and amendments are
necessary, they will be listed at the bottom of this page and appended to the document.

MS001 Traffic Management.

6 Sequence of works/Methodology
Site investigation has to be carried out for safety precautions prior to commencement of the work, in order to display
relevant sign boards.
Flagmen would be deployed on both sides of the work to control the traffic whilst signage and
cones are being set up.
Men at work 75m-100m ahead” sign boards would be placed on the side of the road.
25m away from men at work sign Narrow Road/one lane traffic sign would be placed in order to
notify the drivers with regard to road situation.
Working area will be corded off with traffic cones to inform the oncoming traffic of the work.
After completion of the work, safety cones and barricade boars has to be removed accordingly.

MS003 Structure Excavation.
1 Scope of works/tasks
This Method Statement covers the necessary excavation for any structures such as foundation of Culverts, and
Retaining walls, wing walls, Head Walls, lined drains masonry drains and other Structures.

6 Sequence of works/Methodology
a) All excavation work will be carried out according to the safe systems of work laid down in the Company
Safety Policy.
b) Wherever reasonably practicable, the preferred method of ensuring safety in excavations will be by battering
or benching.
c) A supply of other shoring materials will be available for instances where neither of the above methods for
preventing collapse are suitable.
d) The Company will supply sufficient physical barriers for erection around excavations greater than 2 metres in
depth. Excavations less than 2 metres in depth will be surrounded by bunting or other suitable material. The
Company will be responsible for the erection and maintenance of these barriers.
e) Inspection Check list
Ensure that the all activities being performed with the expected quality, an inspection check list would be
filled by LM or the respective QC inspectors in case of pre construction and during construction. The
inspection check list shall include the specific requirements, safety and environmental measures.
f) Dimension Control
Excavation for any structure would be carried out according to the designed cross sections. The required
dimension of the foundations or any other part would be properly maintained during the excavation and
those requirements would be checked with the inspection check list.
g) The final filling level will be decided by designed cross section.
Excavation near existing structures
h) Any existing structures that cannot be temporarily relocated shall be preserved prior to the excavation
proceed in the opinion of the Group 5 Construction Manager. Above mentioned structures shall be carefully
protected from damages by the Contractor.
i) In order to protect existing structure, the Contractor shall do shoring where required. The shoring method
shall be submitted for the approval of the Group 5 Construction Manager. For deep excavation very near to
the existing structure, sheet pile shoring shall be used to protect the structures.
j) The arrangement made shall be approved by the Contractor and work should be hold until the Group 5
Construction Manager’s decisions are issued.

MS004 Backfilling and compaction.
1 Scope of works/tasks
This Method Statement covers the necessary back backfilling for any structures such as foundation of Bridges,
Culverts, and Retaining walls win walls, Head Walls, concrete lined drains, masonry drains and other Structures.

6.1 Quality Control Procedure
Sampling and Testing
Samples of soil would be taken from the locations were excavations done, by the Group 5 Construction
Manager and those samples would be placed in a polythene bag providing identification tag. All required
tests would be carried out in the materials testing laboratory according to the frequencies specified in the
technical specification to confirm whether the material can be classified as Embankment Type I or
Embankment Type II. Other required tests would be carried out after placing and compacting over and
behind the structures.
6.2 Inspection Check list
To ensure that the all activities being performed with the expected quality, an inspection check list would be
filled by QAM or the respective QC inspectors in case of pre construction and during construction. The
inspection check list shall include the specific requirements, safety and environmental measures.
6.3 Dimension Control
The final filling level will be decided by designed cross section.

MS005 Masonry Lined drains

The proper drainage shall be provided by constructing, shaping, finishing or backfilling where necessary involved in
conformity with the required alignment, levels, grades and cross sections.

Sampling and testing
Embankment Filling Material:
Samples would be collected from the work execution areas and would be placed in a polythene bag
providing identification tag. All required tests would be carried out in the materials testing laboratory for
identification suitability of the Excavation Materials. The areas where backfilling is required for the conformity
of the design levels, the works would be carried out with approved filling materials in layer by layer as
described in technical specifications. Required test would be carried out after placing and compacting to
check the degree of compaction.
Dimension Control
Channel excavation would be carried out according to the designed cross sections conformity with typical
section issued for construction. The required shape, depth and offset of the excavation would be properly
maintained during construction and those requirements would be checked with the inspection check list.
Methodology
Setting Out
a. The setting out would be carried out in the area where the Group 5 Construction Manager’s
approval is given for channel excavation.
b. The line of the Excavation would be marked with lime powder or any other proper manner

Embankment construction or any other filling specified to fill with Embankment Materials.
d. Materials deemed not suitable for embankment filling would be disposed of to approved disposal
locations
e. Any area backfilling have to be done to form earth drains, filling would be done using approved
filling material instructed by the Group 5 Construction Manager

MS007 Manual Handling

6 Sequence of works/Methodology
6.1 All manual handling operations carried out by Company employees will be assessed by the groundworks
supervisor who will advise on the methods to be adopted. Safe manual handling techniques are provided in
the JR Goddard Contracting employee handbook.
6.2 Full procedures for assessing manual handling tasks and ensuring safety during manual handling operations
are contained within the Company safety manual. These will be adhered to at all times by our employees,
who are given free access to all health and safety information.
6.3 Kerbs, slabs and other heavy roadside goods will be handled using mechanical means wherever reasonably
practicable. In some instances, two-man lifting may be appropriate and this will be permitted only with the
express permission of the groundwork supervisor.
6.4 We do not expect to handle any items weighing more than 25 kg on the site.
If the occasion arises, the senior operative will determine a safe method of handling and specifically instruct
nominated individuals. In all instances, these general precautions will be taken:
i. Deliveries and materials handling will be planned to minimise the extent of manual handling of
materials.
ii. Routes by which materials have to be carried by hand will be constantly checked for, and kept free
of, obstructions.
iii. Appropriate PPE will be worn to make sure that materials can be handled safely, e.g. gloves and
safety footwear.
iv. Two or more operatives will carry larger or heavier items.

with all requirements of health and safety law, the entire contents of this method
statement, controls detailed in the risk assessment carried out for this project and
any instructions given by the principal contractor or appointed safety advisers.
