1. Introduction
This method statement describes the methods and procedures to be followed in the
Cutting Back of 70/100 Bitumen with Paraffin.

2 Applicable Specifications and Standards

2.1 Specification

Reference Standards

SATCC 1998 Edition : Section 4300/4400

Project specifications : Preliminary Design – Report Rev 1, 27/06/2011

3 Plant + Equipment

Surfacing Foreman : Clever Harry/Tawanda Chaitezvi

Item No Operation
Bitumen Distributor 1 Sucking, and Circulating.
200 Litre Drums 5 Measuring the Paraffin.
Fire Extinguishers 2 Minimum 2 in addition to the
Standard on BD.

3.1 Fire Hazard.

Prior to this operation a pre-task risk assessment shall be carried out under the direction
of the Surfacing Foreman. Special emphasis shall be on:
1. Temperature of Bitumen in the BD shall not be more 140 degrees Celsius.
2. All Burners must be off.
3. At least two additional Fire extinguishers must be at hand.
4. No other external source of fire must be nearby.
5. The BD manhole shall be kept closed and no paraffin shall be added through the

The following sequence will be followed to achieve the required percentage of

paraffin cut back.

4.1 Bitumen Distributor Loading.

The BD shall be loaded with the 70/100 Bitumen, care being taken to allow sufficient
space for the addition of paraffin. The Bitumen shall be circulated sufficiently until a
uniform temperature is achieved within the Bitumen. The temperature of the Bitumen
shall not be more than 140 degrees Celsius prior to adding paraffin.

4.2 Addition of Paraffin.

Step 1 : The BD shall move to the designated cutting back position.
Step 2: A dipstick reading shall be taken to establish the quantity of Bitumen in the
BD. The required quantity of paraffin shall then be calculated from table 4402/1. For
the air temperature ranges of 21 – 26 degrees Celsius (32 – 40 degrees Celsius for
surface temperature) - 3 % cutback shall be used.
Step 3 : The measured quantity of paraffin shall then be placed in an open drum and
sucked in through the Bitumen pump.
Step 4: The Bitumen and paraffin mix shall then be circulated for a minimum of 45
minutes. During this process all burners shall be shut off and no open flames allowed
near the BD. Safety precautions as detailed in 3.1 above shall apply during the whole
process of cutting back.

4.3 Spraying Temperatures.

The spraying temperatures shall as given in table 4402/1, Were 3% cut back is used
the range of spray temperatures shall be 121 – 138 degrees Celsius.

5.0 Surfacing Work.

The methods as detailed in Method Statements for Reseal(MST 16) and Double Seal
(MST 14) shall apply thereafter.

6.0 Safety
All cutting back operations shall be supervised by the surfacing Foreman. At all times
a documented pre-task risk assessment shall be at hand.

7.0 Environmental
All Bitumen and Paraffin spillages shall be attended to before the end of each shift.
