Grade 9 French Second Language Year Plan (September - December 2021)

Benjamin Scott

Unit Rationale:
The content of this FSL-9 course is going to be framed around the Experience GLO of the program of studies. This section of the
program of studies will serve as a guide for the rest of the outcomes that will need to be met throughout the semester. As the students
learn about sports, housing, music, and community, they will also be developing their language learning strategies, cultural
understanding, communication, and language skills. The activities in which the students will engage will have them exploring new
vocabulary relating to the Experience GLO, and have them use their knowledge in practical contexts that will meet all of the outcomes
necessary for this course.

Underlying Assumptions, Philosophies, and Student Demographics:

With this course starting in September, it is important to keep in mind that many of these students have had previous French courses
cut short due to Covid-19. Therefore, many of the students will need time to ease back into their use of the language. In order to
encourage the students to rebuild their confidence with their language use, the course will focus on the students expressing their own
stories and emotions in relation to the content that will be covered. It will also be important to ensure that the students do not feel too
much pressure when using their second language, so that we can build a strong classroom community. Each student will be more
skilled in certain areas than others, so we will allow the students to use their strengths while finding ways to build their confidence in
other areas. Confidence is key when it comes to the use of a second language, and the more their confidence builds, so will their desire
to learn.

Classroom Climate Plan:

Overview: Continuing to learn a new language is fun and exciting, but it can also be daunting and tedious. Taking on a second
language while working on a regular Jr. High workload can be a challenge. In order to keep the students engaged and excited about
language learning, much of the course will focus on using their newly acquired language abilities to communicate their own thoughts
and interests with the classmates. It is also very important to establish that the language learning process is different for everyone,
therefore students will need to respect one another at all times in the classroom. Learning a language should be fun, so having a
classroom environment based on mutual respect that encourages the sharing of ideas and personalities is of utmost importance.
Non-negotiables:
1. All students must respect the linguistic abilities of others.
2. No cellphone use unless it has been permitted by the teacher.
3. All students are expected to speak French as much as they possibly can. English can only be used when absolutely necessary.
