UNIT 1: SAVE YOURSELF

On June 4, 1989, China ended the mass protest for freedom and democracy in Tiananmen Square.
It had several tanks that invaded the square, ran over the protesters and shot everything that moved,
promoting a real bloodbath. To this day, the exact number of deaths is not known. Students who tried to
help the wounded were also killed.
There are reports that the protests had started six weeks earlier, after the death of the party's chief, Hu
Yaobang. On April 18, 1989, thousands of university students marched in to occupy the central square of
the Chinese capital. They demanded the democratization of the Communist Party and the fight against
corruption.
In short, military violence has resulted in hundreds of deaths and thousands of injuries.
