CHAPTER I

PRELIMINARY

1.1. Background
In everyday life, we certainly cannot be separated from the permission to do something.
We ask permission or permission from others as a form of respect, as well as part of
politeness.
Not infrequently, other people ask our permission to do something. When someone asks
for permission, we don't always have to grant it. When we object, we may refuse the request.
However, we should do everything in a good and right way.
Therefore, this time we will increase knowledge about how to ask for permission
(asking for permission), giving permission (giving permission), and also how to refuse it
(refusing permission).
1.2. Problem Formulation
From the above background can be formulated problems, including as follows:
1. What is the function of permission in everyday life?
2. How to make a correct permission sentence?
3. How to express acceptance and rejection of permission?
1.3. The Objectives of Writing
The purpose of writing this paper is as follows:
1. Explain the function of permission in everyday life.
2. Explain how to make the correct permission sentence
3. Explain how to express acceptance and rejection of permission.

CHAPTER II
DISCUSSION

2.1. Understanding of Permission

Asking and giving permission is an interesting subject to learn in English. Because it
has to do with how we ask for permission, how we give permission, and how we refuse to
give permission to others.
When we want to use something that belongs to someone else, of course we will ask
the owner's permission before using it. When asking permission to borrow something, we will
try to act and say politely so that the owner is willing to lend his property to us sincerely.
If we are going to ask for permission in English, we should use the word please.
Indeed, English grammar does not regulate the use of the word please. But if we do not use
the word, it will seem rude. Thus, the word is used to sound much more polite.
For example, when you are on campus, you realize that you left your cell phone in the
boarding house or apartment you live in. Because you go to campus with a friend, you need to
borrow a friend's motorbike to pick up your cellphone at the boarding house or apartment.
Well, of course you need to use polite language to borrow a friend's motorbike, even though
he is a close friend.
In addition, there are certain situations that require us to ask permission before doing
something urgent. For example, you are attending a friend's birthday party. But you can't stay
at the party for long because you have been active all day, so you feel tired and need to go
home to rest. For that, you need to ask permission from the friend who invited you to the
birthday party to go home immediately. Then you also need to use the right language to ask
the friend for permission, so he doesn't get offended.
If these situations occur in Indonesia, of course we can ask permission simply by using
Indonesian. However, at this time there are not a few foreign people living in Indonesia, both
for teaching and learning activities, work, or just vacations.
Well, even though these people from abroad are in Indonesia to study, work, or
vacation, they may not necessarily be able to use Indonesian. Therefore, if we encounter
situations like the example above and come into contact with friends who are from abroad and
cannot speak Indonesian, we can use English.

5
It is not impossible either, later you are abroad, whether to study, work, or just a
vacation, you will encounter situations that require you to ask permission from friends who
are not from Indonesia. You automatically have to use English to ask your friend for
permission.
