Slide 32: Now let’s find out why integrating presentation software applications to language teaching
and learning will support the development of students’ four language skills. Before we proceed on
how presentation software activates the four macro skills, let’s first recall these skills. Anyone who
remembers the four macro skills?
1. Reading
The first skill is reading. Pag tayo naghahanap ng mga information sa internet man o physical books,
what we do is to read. But, hindi tayo nagbabasa lang. We analyzed the information that we get, we
resort to critical reading. Kung natatandaan niyo, sa ED 7 natin we discussed about novice and
expert learners. Novice learner lahat ng impormasyon na makukuha, they attempt to process them
all. Meanwhile, expert learners ay yung mga learners na sineselect lang nila yung mga important and
substantial information. So sinasabi dito na dapat yung mga bata ay maging expert learners. Kung
saan they were able to find useful information, highlights information sa presentation na maiintindihan
agad nung listeners. So easy to understand. Pag may nakitang unfamiliar terms dapat isearch ano
bang ibig sabihin ng word. Kahit isa lang yang di mo alam na word makakaapekto yan sa
pagkakaintindi mo sa topic at pagkakaintindi nung listeners.
2. Writing
After reading, yung mga nakalap na important information ay ilalagay na o iiinput sa presentation
software na napiling gamitin. Pero yung mga information na nakuha kailangan pa rin yang salain.
Main points lang dapat ang isama sa presentation kasi sa totoo lang ang hirap idigest o intindihin ng
isang presentation na napakaraming text ang nakalagay sa isang slide. That’s why using presentation
software activates writing skill, kasi madami silang features na very useful in writing or in organizing
information. Nagiging creative tayong mga teacher at yung mga bata na din kasi naeexplore nila yung
other ways to present ideas at nahaharness din yung organizational skill nila. In writing or putting in
information in a presentation software, we also need to consider the layout. Bukod sa dapat hindi
packed yung ideas sa isang slide, yung font style and font size din ay helpful. Ano ba yung
recommended font size na dapat gamitin? Any font size less than 24 point ay hindi recommended.
28 pataas ay okay, if possible 36 pataas. The font size of this slide is 32 so okay lang siya.
3. Speaking
Next we have speaking. After magawa yung visual aid, next is the actual presentation of the ideas.
But, before the actual presentation, kailangan magpractice muna. Why? Paano kung merong
unfamiliar terms, words, or phrases na kasama sa presentation? Tapos sa actual presentation mali
bigkas mo, mali paliwanag mo, yung audience iisipin nila ayy hindi ready, hindi nagpractice. Dahil dun
pwedeng di na sila makinig kasi tingin nila di mo pinag aralan o hindi reliable yung mga sinasabi mo.
Meanwhile, presentation software activates speaking skill because it serves us the presenter’s guide
when he/she is speaking. Dahil sa visual aid na hinanda, it’s easier to remember ideas. Confident ka
kasi alam mo na may guide at ayun yung presentation software.
4. Listening
We learn to listen well because of the visual elements or visual aid prepared by the presenter using
presentation software. The idea behind this slide is that we should listen with a purpose. To keep the
listeners awake and focused sa presentation, presenter could think of ways katulad ng questions
before the presentation na sasagutin nila after or pwede din silang mag list down ng ideas na pwede
nilang ishare after din ng presenter na magpresent.
In addition sa listening skill, listening from a recorded videos like youtube videos ay iba sa pakikinig to
one’s actual presentation kasi sa pag actual mong nakikita yung presentation or in person mong
naririnig yung presenter pwede kang mag raise ng questions o may iclarify na masasagot nila sa
mismong oras na yon.
So there are five factors or guidelines that we need to consider in preparing or designing a
presentation according to Brooks and Gavin (2015).
Basic Instructional Design in Preparing Presentations
1. Setting Up the Presentation Class
Students also need to know how to make a presentation and as a teacher we have to help them
construct an effective and engaging presentation. Kasama na don ang pagtuturo sa kanila ng skills
na kailangan sa pagconstruct ng isang presentation. First skill is making an eye contact with your
audience para mas mafeel nila yung sinasabi mo and also to build rapport which helps the audience
to connect with you and your subject. Second, how to organize a presentation. Familiar ba kayo sa
10-20-30 Rule for slideshows? Advisable na pag di ganun karami yung ipepresent mo at least 10
slides lang meron nag presentation, and those 10 slides will be tackled for 20 minutes only, 30 naman
ang font size lalo na pag nagpepresent ka harap ng maraming tao o malawak yung room. Next, use
body language to emphasize your point, manage time, and how to construct an effective PowerPoint
presentation using different presentation software.
2. Organization of the Presentation
In organizing and arranging information it is recommended to make an outline of the topic. Sa outline
nakaorganize yung Introduction, major topics, subtopics, supporting details and conclusion kung saan
magbibigay ka ng insightful sentence to end your topic/presentation. Hindi lang nakakatulong ang
outline sa pagoorganize ng information, it also ensure that presenters do not leave out any important
elements and to keep them on track.
3. Presentation Skills
In developing oral presentation we should be mindful of macro and micro skills. Four macro skills ay
yung reading, writing, speaking, and listening. Micro skills, on the other hand, include the genre
specific language items such as the vocabulary and grammar. Para maachieve yung successful oral
presentation we should be aware of the particular usage of the language. Meanwhile, vocabulary and
grammar are important dahil pag aware tayo kung paano natin sila magagamit ng tama, we will’ have
this sense of achievement or success. Also magagamit din natin to in other situations na kailangan
makipagcommunicate through English. Pag lagi tayong exposed sa pagpepresent through or oral
presentation mas confident tayong magsalita even through English Language.
4. The Use of Visual Aids
Sa visual aids nakalagay yung mga important information ng presentation. It also serves as a guide to
both the listeners and the presenter. Mas madaling malaman ng presenter kung saang part na siya
ng presentation kasi may vidual aids. Sa listeners naman, mas naiintindihan nila yung sinasabi ng
presenter kasi may visual aid na pwede nilang tingnan. Helpful din siya lalo na dun sa mga learners
na hirap makadigest ng information pag naririnig lang nila. Aside from PowerPoint Presentation,
madami pang visual aids na pwede nating gamitin. Anyone who can give example of visual aids aside
po sa PPT Presentation? You can unmute your mic po or comment your answer sa chatbox.
Try nating iexplore ang mga visual aids na nabanggit para magamit natin and para na din mashare
natin in the future pag nagtuturo na tayo.
Examples: Whiteboards, Video clips, Charts and graphs, Handouts, Props. ...
5. Performing Self-Reflections
Self-reflection ay method na ginagamit natin to evaluate our presentation. In this part, we’ll include
the things/areas that we would like to improve either through written or oral. Pwede ding sa sarili lang.
Evaluate mo performance mo. Ano kayang dapat kong iimprove? Anong kailangan kong baguhin
baguhin? Maganda ba kinalabasan ng presentation? And so on…
